Arthur’s face went from red to gray.

“You cannot do that!” he shouted. “This is my house! You have no right!”

“I have every right,” Christian said. “Mark, tell the police chief that Christian Rolark is asking. He will come fast.”

Mark nodded and stepped outside to make the call.

Lily’s smile cracked. “Christian, why are you doing this? She is the liar!”

“Maybe,” Christian said. “Maybe not. But your father is sweating like a pig. Honest people don’t sweat when the police come.”

Eleanor grabbed Arthur’s arm. “Say something! Stop him!”

Arthur said nothing. His eyes kept flicking toward the hallway that led to the basement.

Sophia saw it.

The basement, she thought. That is where they wanted me to live. Next to the boiler. Why there?

Then a cold idea hit her.

They did not want to hide me from the world. They wanted to keep me close to something.

Sophia looked at Christian. “Can I say something?”

“Speak.”

“Look at Arthur,” Sophia said quietly. “He keeps looking at the basement door.”

Christian turned. Arthur’s face froze.

“I am not looking at anything!” Arthur said quickly.

“Yes, you are,” Christian said. He started walking toward the hallway.

“Stop!” Arthur ran after him and grabbed his arm. “Please, Christian! That room is private! It has old business papers! It is a mess!”

Christian looked down at Arthur’s hand on his sleeve.

“Remove it,” he said. “Or I will remove it for you.”

Arthur let go like the sleeve was on fire.

Christian pushed open the basement door. A cold, damp smell rose from below. The stairs were narrow and dark.

He turned to Sophia. “You first. It is your room, after all.”

Sophia nodded. Her heart was pounding, but she walked down the stairs. Christian followed close behind her. Lily, Arthur, and Eleanor came last, whispering angrily to each other.

At the bottom, there was a short hallway. It had three doors.

The first door was the boiler room. It was hot and loud.

The second door was a small, dirty room with a thin bed and one bare light bulb. It was so cold that Sophia could see her breath.

“This is where they wanted me to sleep?” Sophia said. Her voice shook with anger.

Christian said nothing. But his fists were tight.

The third door was locked.

“What is in there?” Christian asked.

“Nothing!” Arthur shouted from the stairs. “Just storage!”

“Then open it,” Christian said.

“I lost the key!”

Christian gave him a long, flat look. Then he lifted one foot and kicked the door.

BANG!

The old wood cracked. He kicked again.

CRASH!

The door swung open.

Inside was a small, dusty room. There was no bed. No boxes. No papers.

There was only one old wooden desk. On top of it sat a rusty metal box with a heavy lock.

Behind Sophia, Eleanor let out a small cry.

“Arthur,” she whispered. “You said you burned it.”

Arthur glared at her. “Shut UP!”

Sophia walked toward the desk. Her hands were shaking.

“What is this?” she asked.

Nobody answered.

Christian picked up the metal box. It was heavy. He looked at Arthur.

“Key.”

“I told you, I don’t have it!”

“Then I will break it.”

He set the box on the floor, lifted his heel, and stomped down.

CRACK!

The lock snapped. The lid flew open.

Inside was a stack of old papers, a small photo album, and a baby bracelet.

Sophia’s hands trembled as she picked up the bracelet. It was tiny and pink, with white letters on it.

Baby Girl Resington. St. Mary’s Hospital.

Her breath caught.

“This is a real hospital bracelet,” she whispered. “From twenty-two years ago.”

Christian took the top paper from the box. His eyes moved quickly across the page.

“What does it say?” Sophia asked.

Christian did not answer right away. When he finally looked up, his face was very serious.

“It is a hospital record,” he said. “Two babies were born on the same night. Baby A and Baby B. One had emerald eyes.”

Sophia’s heart stopped. She reached up and touched her own face.

“The nurse who switched them wrote her name here,” Christian said. “And a note. Arthur paid her to do it.”

Everyone froze.

“What?” Sophia said.

“That is a lie!” Arthur shouted, but his voice was weak. “That paper is fake!”

Christian ignored him. He kept reading out loud.

“‘Mr. Arthur Resington asked me to swap the babies. His real daughter was born sick and weak. The doctors said she would not live. He wanted a healthy baby to carry the Resington name. I took a healthy baby from a poor young mother and gave her the sick one. Please forgive me.’”

The room was so quiet that Sophia could hear her own heartbeat.

“No,” Sophia whispered. “That is not… that is not…”

She looked at Lily.

Lily’s face was white as paper. Her mouth was open.

“That is a lie!” Lily said. “I am their daughter! I am the healthy baby!”

“Lily,” Christian said slowly. “You said yourself that you found your birth papers. You said your mother was a cleaning lady.”

“Yes! Because Father told me that story!”

“Which story?”

Lily’s face went blank.

Sophia watched her. Something was very wrong.

“Wait,” Sophia said. “Lily, you told me a minute ago that YOU were the cleaning lady’s daughter. But this paper says the healthy baby was the poor mother’s child.”

“So?” Lily said.

“So the sick baby was Arthur’s real daughter,” Sophia said. “The one who was supposed to die.”

Lily’s eyes filled with something Sophia had never seen before. It was not hate. It was fear.

“That sick baby…” Sophia said slowly. “That is not me, is it?”

“What are you saying?” Christian asked.

Sophia turned to face Lily. Her voice was very quiet.

“I was the healthy baby from the poor mother. I grew up in Eastbridge. My mother was a waitress. She died when I was seven.”

Lily took a step back.

“And you,” Sophia said. “You were the SICK baby. You are the real Resington daughter.”

“NO!” Lily screamed.

“That is why they picked you,” Sophia said. “That is why they love you. They were not fooled. They KNEW.”

Arthur sank to his knees. Eleanor covered her mouth.

Sophia looked from one face to the next. Everything finally made sense.

“You did not bring me here to hide me,” she said. “You brought me here because you needed to get rid of the proof. You needed me to sign that contract.”

She looked at the paper in Christian’s hand.

“What does the contract say, Christian?”

Christian flipped to the last page of the box. He pulled out a second folded sheet.

His eyes went wide.

“Sophia,” he said. His voice was very low. “You signed away your rights to any Resington inheritance. And you signed a paper saying you were NOT their daughter.”

Sophia’s stomach dropped.

“But that is not the worst part,” Christian said.

He held up the paper. At the bottom, in bright red ink, was one more line.

If Sophia ever discovers the truth, she must be silenced.

Sophia looked up.

Arthur stood in the doorway, holding something small and black in his shaking hand.

It was a gun.

We have been together for two years!”Christian looked down at her hands like they were covered in mud.“Let go,” he said. His voice was quiet. But Lily let go so fast, she almost fell over.“I have been watching you for two years, Lily,” Christian said. “You smile at my mother’s birthday party. You cry at charity events. You bring soup when I am sick. I thought you were kind.”Lily’s eyes lit up with hope. “I am kind! I love you, Christian!”“Today, I saw the real you,” Christian said coldly. “You lied. Arthur’s face turned from pale to purple. A cold sweat broke out across his forehead."Mr. Rolark! You... you misunderstand!" Arthur stammered, his hands shaking as he tried to laugh it off. "This girl isn't... she isn't our daughter! She's just a distant relative from the Eastbridge slums. A temporary maid! She has no manners, and she just attacked Lily!""A distant relative?" Christian’s voice was dangerously quiet. His dark amber eyes narrowed into cold slits. "Do you think I am blind, Arthur? Or do you think I am an idiot?"Arthur choked on his words. He couldn't breathe under Christian’s suffocating pressure. The entire room felt like a freezing meat locker.Lily saw Arthur failing, so she immediately turned on her tears. She threw herself onto the carpet, clutching her foot and sobbing loudly."Christian, it's true!" Lily wailed, looking up at him with huge, tearful eyes. "She hates me!
