I was shaking with rage. My mate was exposed to danger; she could have died today had Alistair not sensed her distress sooner. Diara was crying and trembling; the adrenaline had worn off, and she looked pale and weak. I took her to the shower and placed her in the tub filled with oils to help her relax. She didn’t protest. There was blood on her body and in her hair. I sat at the edge of the bath with a sponge in hand, gently cleaning her. I’d never bathed anyone before, but she looked so sad and unable to do it herself.

I noticed that she took pleasure in caring for her hair. I loved her hair; it suited her and fell beautifully against her back. As I washed her hair, I massaged her scalp. After I was finished, I helped her change into fresh clothes and took her to bed. I sat at the edge of the bed, watching her. She held Ana tightly, and a foreign emotion took root in my chest.
