Chapter 2

Author: Nora Blythe
The next day, even before dawn broke, I received a call from my mom.

“Harley Goodwin! Did you bully your brother? Get back home right now!”

She hung up after lambasting me.

Over the years, my mom and I hardly interacted with each other. Each time I called to check in on her, she would only care to talk about Clement.

I sighed inwardly.

I only made it back home in the afternoon.

The moment I stepped in through the doors, Clement turned to me with a look of indignation. Sue was next to him, as was Tina and my mom.

The four of them looked at me in disgust.

My mom caressed Clement’s cheek, looking heartbroken.

“Just look at what you’ve done to my darling son!

“Haven’t I taught you since you were young to always give in to your younger brother? Did you forget all about that? They only forgot to include you in their trip, that’s all.

“You’re a grown adult. Why are you being so calculative?”

My mom pointed at me and scolded me harshly. She even grabbed a glass of water from the table and splashed it on my face.

I bowed my head, letting the water drip down my hair onto the floor.

I felt suffocated. When I looked up, I saw Clement standing right behind them.

I turned to glance at Sue, who remained calm and unperturbed.

I knew that once again, no one was going to side with me this time.

“Mom, I’ve been giving in to him all these years.

“When he fought and got injured at the age of seven, you wanted to teach him a lesson yet couldn’t bear to hit him. You hit me instead, accusing me of not being a good role model as his elder brother.

“When he got caught stealing at the age of 18, you made me his scapegoat for fear that it would tarnish his reputation.

“I was locked up in the youth detention centre for ten days and had all my scholarship offers revoked after my release.

“Mom, am I not your son too?”

My mom’s face turned paler with every word I spoke. Toward the end, she shifted her gaze away and even her tone softened.

“I did that for your own good… You’re the elder brother…” She sighed. “At my age, all I want to see is you two getting along with each other.”

As she said so, she retrieved a document from a drawer. It was a property transfer agreement.

I knew exactly what was going on the moment I saw that document.

Scolding me was one thing. This agreement was the true motive for calling me back home today.

Sue tried to soothe my mom.

“Mom, don’t get too agitated. You have heart issues. It’s my fault for not pulling Harley back in time. He was the first to punch Clement. We’ll agree to any compensation.”

I looked at Sue in a daze, then saw a bright smile light up Clement’s face.

“Sue, I knew you dote on me the most.”

I clenched my fists so tight, my nails dug into the flesh of my palms. It sent a sharp pain up my arms.

I heard my mom go on. “Harley, your brother likes your property and its good location. Sign this and let your brother have it by way of compensation.”

I was so furious I chuckled out loud. I didn’t expect my punch to be worth so much money.

After my dad passed away, he left behind one property each for Clement and I.

Now, just because Clement likes it, I have to let him have it.

The indignation I had suppressed for over a decade burst forth at this moment.

I stood up straight and said coldly, “Mom, I’m not giving in this time.”

The look on my mom’s face stiffened, while Clement’s eyes widened in disbelief.

All along, I had been tolerating and giving in. This was my first time pushing back.

Sue tugged at my sleeve and whispered into my ear, “Why are you sounding so righteous when you punched him? It’s just a house. Not like you don’t already have one. What’s the big deal with letting him have it?”

I smirked and cast her a sideways glance.

“If I were to let him have my house this time, should I also let him have you if he says he wants to be with you next…”

Before I was done speaking, my mom slapped me hard on my cheek. The metallic taste of blood spread in my mouth.

My ears started buzzing, and I almost couldn’t hear what my mom was yelling.

“You’re simply outrageous!”

The next time I met Sue was three months later. I was halfway through my current project and was signing another contract with my company. When I realized that our divorce was not yet finalized, I contacted my divorce lawyer.“Mr. Goodwin, I’ve communicated with your wife, but she insists on meeting you. Otherwise, she will not agree to the divorce.”I had wanted to file a lawsuit when my lawyer first informed me about it.On second thought, however, I didn’t want to waste time on this.I agreed to meet Sue.She brought Tina to meet me at a cafe. Having not seen her for a year, she looked much more haggard and not as bright and stylish as before. The moment Tina saw me, she greeted me enthusiastically, “Dad!”If it were in the past, I would have been so glad to hear her greet me so brightly. But right now, I felt extremely calm, almost emotionless.“Harley, we’re not getting any younger. Mom fell sick upon knowing that you want to divorce me…” Sue began. I cut her off bef

Yet, everything made sense when she thought back on Harley’s recent strange behavior. He no longer questioned her about her relationship with Clement, nor did he show any concern for Tina’s studies. He wasn’t speaking much, either.Sue felt a huge weight on her chest, making it difficult to breathe. She suddenly realized that Harley had never told her about his business trip itinerary, either. In his previous business trips, he never failed to tell her that.Yet this time, he didn’t.Sue took a deep breath and immediately called Harley. She didn’t expect her call to be blocked.Sue’s heart had never beaten so fast before. She held her breath and hurriedly called Clement.“Can you contact your brother?”Clement immediately tried calling Harley as well, but similarly, he was unable to get through.“Sue, what happened to Harley? He blocked me.”It finally dawned upon Sue that Harley was serious about getting a divorce. She asked Tina to call Harley as well. She thought that H

Sue leaned back on the headrest and shut her eyes.Suddenly, Clement spoke up.“Sue, I heard you want to divorce Harley. Is that true?”Sue’s eyes flew open. That had happened many years ago. She didn’t expect Clement to still remember it.It was six years ago, when Tina was still in high school. Back then, she had been fighting incessantly with Harley. All of their arguments had something to do with Clement.“Sue, we’ve been married for so many years and I’m your husband. Why do you always side with Clement? If you like him so much, why don’t we get a divorce so you can marry him instead?”She had been accused of this simply because she missed Harley’s call while at the hospital visiting Clement, who had fallen sick. She found Harley’s ridiculous accusation deeply frustrating. There had been nothing between her and Clement.Still, she couldn’t be bothered to explain herself.Harley didn’t think that way, though. He was certain there was something going on between the two o

Sue and Clement were chatting and laughing away. They didn't realize that Harley wasn't with them.It was only right before they sent Tina into the school and when they were preparing to take a photo at the school entrance that Tina finally asked, “Mom, where did Dad go?”Sue stood stunned for a while. She looked around and realized that indeed, Clement was gone. Her brows furrowed, and she instinctively pulled out her phone to make a call.Clement stopped her. “Sue, isn’t Harley going for a business trip today?”Sue said irritably, “I just told him to make sure he finishes up his work on time so that he can attend Tina’s first day at school. He promised.”Clement sighed. “I didn’t expect him to leave without saying a word. It’s Tina’s first day at her university. Let’s not ruin her day.”Somehow, Clement’s words only made the annoyance in her heart grow. She put her phone aside and said to Tina, “Your dad is probably overseas for a business trip.”Tina looked extremely upset a

Ever since I gave Clement my house, my mom and Sue’s attitudes toward me improved by leaps and bounds. Even Tina took the initiative to invite me to her special occasion.“Dad, I’m starting school next week. Remember to come.”I was stunned for a moment. That was when I realized that she was about to begin her university life. Parents would usually accompany their children for enrolment. Before, I did many things just so Tina could achieve her dream of going to university. I had looked forward to the day I would send her off to her university.I nodded. “Sure.”I had been busy preparing for the divorce and my resignation from my work.I pulled out my phone and navigated to the calendar. That was when I realized the first day of Tina’s school coincided with the day I was scheduled to leave the country.Sue saw me staring at my phone and leaned in close. “What are you looking at?”I turned off the screen and widened the distance between us. “Nothing.”Sue didn’t pursue the ma

My mom pointed at my nose and started yelling. She was so furious, her lips started trembling and she blacked out there and then.Sue and Clement started panicking and getting flustered.Clement grabbed my collar and yelled, “Harley! How could you say something like that to anger Mom? How are you going to make up for it if anything happens to her?”Sue hurriedly called for an ambulance and looked at me with eyes filled with disappointment.“Harley, are you bent on destroying the family’s peace?” When the ambulance arrived, they shifted my mom into the vehicle and left with her for the hospital.I splashed cold water on my face and saw that a faint handprint had appeared on my cheek. By the time I rushed to the hospital, my mom was already in the emergency room.Sue kept patting Clement on the back. “Mom will be fine. Don’t worry.”Clement’s head was hung low as he sobbed. “Harley could have just said no if he didn’t want me to have the property. Why did he have to say that and
