Mia's POV

The next day, Dr. Matthews officially cleared me for travel, with the usual cautions about staying hydrated and taking frequent breaks. And Scarlett, of course, sent daily updates about itinerary adjustments and accommodation options each more luxurious than the last.

And Kyle continued to text about the trust paperwork. For some reason, I gave him a perfunctory reply. And I delayed the meeting we had previously agreed upon. Kyle always makes me unhappy. I hate that he has this power over me. So I tried to save myself by not seeing him.

Then Wednesday arrived.

The West End Cafe was quiet at three o'clock, the lunch crowd long gone and the after-work rush not yet begun. I spotted Nate immediately at a corner table, already waiting despite my being five minutes early.

"Mia," he smiled, pulling out a chair for me. "You look well."

"Thanks," I settled into the seat, grateful to be off my feet. "Though 'well' is a relative term these days. Pretty sure I've officially entered th

Mia"Thomas," I said, my voice coming out rougher than I intended. He looked up from where he was plating our dinner, his face immediately concerned. "What's wrong?""Are you preparing to propose to me?"The sound rolled around like sandpaper on glass. For a moment, neither of us moved. The candles flickered, casting dancing shadows across his face, and I could hear the distant sound of traffic through my apartment windows.I swallowed the taste of alcohol in my mouth—no, wait, I hadn't been drinking. That metallic taste was pure anxiety.Thomas froze for a moment, then turned to look at me fully.I could already see the answer in his eyes before he spoke. This was hard. The salmon on our plates was still steaming, the herb crust golden and perfect. The wild rice gleamed under the candlelight.I took a deep breath. "Thomas—""Don't say it, Mia," he interrupted, crossing the small distance between us in two quick strides. His lips found mine before I could finish the thought, desperat

Mia's POVI looked at the flowers that had been delivered.White gardenias mixed with deep purple irises, wrapped in kraft paper with a simple silk ribbon. Not the typical roses or lilies that most men defaulted to. "No card?" I asked Camille, who was hovering in my doorway with obvious curiosity."None that I could find," she said, stepping closer to examine the arrangement. "But they're gorgeous. Very sophisticated choice."I lifted the bouquet, breathing in the sweet. The smell transported me to the summer evenings, honeysuckle climbing over garden walls.I knew it had to be Thomas. He was the only person who would choose something so thoughtful.I placed the flowers on the windowsill where the afternoon light would catch them. The purple irises seemed to glow, their color shifting as clouds moved across the sun outside. Then I continued working. The residential renovation I was designing had been challenging me for weeks, but today something had clicked. I pulled up the original

Mia's POV"Mom, can I have some coffee?" Alexander asked me during breakfast.I paused mid-sip, looking at my four-year-old son who was sitting across from me at our kitchen table. Ethan was beside him, methodically cutting his pancakes into precise squares, but I could tell he was listening to every word of this conversation."Children shouldn't drink coffee, sweetheart," I said, setting my mug down carefully.Alexander's face immediately scrunched up in that expression he got when he thought adults were being unreasonable. "But why? You drink it every morning.""Because coffee has caffeine, and caffeine isn't good for growing boys," I explained.Alexander clearly wasn't satisfied with that answer. He crossed his small arms. "That sounds like one of those excuses adults make when they don't want to explain the real reason."Ethan looked up from his geometric pancake arrangement. "Alexander's right, Mama. You always tell us to be curious and ask questions, but then sometimes you give u

Mia's POV"Morton," I said flatly. "It's six in the morning."Through the narrow gap allowed by the security chain, I could see him properly now. The split lip wasn't his only injury—there was a dark bruise forming along his left cheekbone, and his usually perfect hair was disheveled like he'd been running his hands through it all night. He looked like hell."Mia," he said, his voice hoarse. "I need to talk to you.""About what?" I kept my tone cold, uninterested. "If this is about Kyle—""It's about Scarlett."The name made me pause. Morton's eyes were bloodshot, the kind of exhaustion that came from not sleeping rather than drinking. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his tie missing entirely."What about Scarlett?"Morton winced as he spoke, the movement pulling at his split lip. "She hit me. Last night. And then she blocked my number, deleted me from everything. I can't reach her."I almost laughed. Almost."Good for her.""Mia, please—""No." I started to close the door, but Morton

Mia's POVAlexander's small body felt cooler against my chest as I carried him back to the car. The fever medication had started working, bringing his temperature down .I secured both boys in their car seats, adjusting Alexander's seatbelt carefully around his limp form. His breathing was deeper now, more peaceful. The flush had faded from his cheeks, leaving him looking pale but no longer burning up.Ethan immediately reached across the space between their seats, his small fingers finding Alexander's hand. Even in sleep, Alexander's fingers curled around his brother's, their hands clasping together.I sat behind the steering wheel for a long moment, not starting the engine. The hospital parking garage was dimly lit, filled with the echo of footsteps and the distant sound of ambulances arriving at the emergency entrance. Through the concrete walls, I could hear the muffled chaos of the hospital continuing its never-ending work of healing and loss. The nurse's words kept replaying in

Mia‘s POV"Alexander?Sweetheart, what are you doing out here?""I had a nightmare, Mama," he said in a small voice. "It was really scary, and I called for you, but you didn't come."I must have been in the shower and didn't hear him."I went to wake up Ethan, but he was sleeping like a log," Alexander continued, "He didn't even move when I poked him. So I had to come find you myself.""Oh, baby," I said, sitting on the sofa and pulling him onto my lap. "I'm so sorry I didn't hear you. Tell me about the nightmare."He snuggled against my chest. "There were these bad people, and they were trying to take you away from us. And Ethan and me were calling and calling, but you couldn't hear us.""That does sound scary," I said, stroking his hair. "But dreams aren't real, sweetheart. They're just our brains making up stories while we sleep. I would never, ever let anyone take me away from you and Ethan.""Promise?" His voice was muffled against my pajama top."I promise with all my heart."His
