Mia's POV

I typed back quickly: "Yes, please confirm. Also, can you research appropriate gifts for a client? Something tasteful but not too expensive."

"On it," Camille replied immediately.

"Everything okay?" Thomas asked, noticing my distraction.

"Just work stuff," I said, tucking my phone away.

Thomas nodded, returning his attention to the stove where he was creating what looked like the most decadent cheese sauce I'd ever seen.

"Can we tell Uncle Thomas about our presents?" Alexander asked suddenly.

"What presents?" Thomas looked curious.

"The superhero man sent us amazing gifts!" Ethan explained excitedly. "There were art supplies and a book about space and even a telescope!"

"A telescope?" Thomas raised an eyebrow. "That's quite a gift from a stranger."

"He's not a stranger," Alexander corrected. "He saved me from falling at the park. Mama said he's a nice man who was impressed by our good behavior."

Thomas looked at me questioningly over the boys' heads.

"Jackson Maxwell," I exp

Mia's POVWe didn't linger on the topic of Madison for too long. The children were smarter than I had imagined, and I didn't want to give them the wrong impression or hint at anything that might worry them further. The conversation moved on to lighter topics after that. The boys finished most of their enormous steaks, declared themselves "too full for dessert but maybe just a little ice cream," and charmed our waiter with their impeccable manners and enthusiastic thank-yous.By the time we got home, they were practically falling asleep in the car."Best dinner ever, Mama," Alexander mumbled as I helped him into his pajamas."The happy cow was delicious," Ethan added.I kissed both their foreheads and settled into the chair between their beds for a few minutes, watching them drift off to sleep. My phone buzzed with a text. Scarlett."Drinks tomorrow night? I need to talk to someone sane. Please say yes. I'm buying."I frowned at the message. Then I typed back: "Of course. Everything ok

Mia's POV"Where did you learn that?" I asked, genuinely curious about Ethan's observation regarding happy cows.Ethan paused mid-chew. "Uncle Thomas told us about it when we were at the farmer's market. He said animals that live good lives taste better because they're not scared or sad when they die.""That's very thoughtful, Uncle Thomas," I murmured, taking another sip of my wine.Alexander looked up from his surf and turf combination, a piece of lobster dangling from his fork. "Mama, do you think this lobster was happy too? Like, did it have lobster friends and play lobster games before it became our dinner?""But lobsters don't have feelings like cows do," Ethan said matter-of-factly. "They have tiny brains. .""You seems to know a lot about food science, son" I observed."Mama," Alexander said. "Why are we celebrating tonight?""Yeah," Ethan chimed in. "You said this was a special celebration dinner, but you didn't tell us what we're celebrating."I smiled. "Well, you know how Ma

Mia's POVThe hostess led us through the dimly lit dining room, past tables of business executives and well-dressed couples, to a corner booth with burgundy leather seating. Alexander's eyes were wide as he took in the dark wood paneling and the massive steaks being delivered to nearby tables."Mama," Ethan said as we settled into our seats, "this place smells like success."I laughed, adjusting his little tie. "What does success smell like, baby?""Like expensive meat," he said solemnly."And leather," Alexander added, running his small hands over the booth. The waiter appeared beside our table, professional and patient despite having two very excited four-year-olds as customers."Good evening," he said with a warm smile. "Welcome to Smith & Wollensky. Can I start you folks off with something to drink?""Chocolate milk!" Alexander announced immediately."Two chocolate milks," I confirmed. "And I'll have a glass of the house red wine.""Very good. And have you had a chance to look at

Mia's POVIt's always nice to see your account balance grow. I reached the street level, I was already feeling celebratory. I wanted to take my boys to an expensive restaurant tonight. The only problem was that I hadn't made a reservation, and good restaurants in the city were usually booked weeks in advance.I called several top-tier restaurants as I walked back to my car, explaining that I was hoping for a last-minute table for three. Most of them laughed—politely, but still."Le Bernardin? I'm sorry, we're completely booked until next month.""Daniel? Our next availability is three weeks from Tuesday.""The Modern? Let me check... no, nothing tonight."I was starting to lose hope when I tried one more place—a well-regarded steakhouse in Midtown that the boys would probably love."Smith & Wollensky," the hostess answered."Hi, I know this is incredibly last-minute, but do you have any availability tonight for a party of three? Around six-thirty or seven?"There was a pause, and I

Mia's POVTo be honest, I'd never really thought about whether Maxwell was married or single. These wealthy people are incredibly protective of their privacy, and frankly, it wasn't any of my business. So hearing about his "engagement" now made me feel awkward as hell.I cleared my throat and forced a professional smile. "Congratulations on your engagement," I said, hoping my voice sounded appropriately enthusiastic. "Should we perhaps reschedule today's meeting? I completely understand if you need to handle personal matters."Maxwell's response surprised me. He didn't hesitate for even a second."No," he said firmly, his voice carrying an edge I hadn't heard before. He turned toward Margaret, who was still hovering uncertainly in the doorway. "Tell Miss Field that I'm in an important business meeting. She'll need to wait."The way he spoke made it sound like his fiancée was nothing more than an annoying interruption. Like she was just another item on his to-do list that he couldn't b

  • The Unwanted Wife and Her Secret Twins   Chapter 261 Engagement Announcement

Mia's POVThe elevator doors slid open with their familiar chime. I made my way toward the reception desk. This was my third time visiting Jackson Maxwell's office.Good news. I'd finally managed to push aside those crazy thoughts that had been driving me to desperately confirm whether Jackson was Kyle.I began to slowly distinguish the differences between him and Kyle. Jackson's skin tone was definitely lighter than Kyle's had been. Kyle spent time outdoors, always had that subtle tan from his golf games and weekend sailing. Jackson had the pale complexion of someone who lived in boardrooms and luxury cars. His iris color was different too. Kyle's eyes had been that intense gray that could turn stormy when he was angry or calculating when he was planning something. Jackson's were hazel. And he seemed taller. Kyle had been maybe six feet, six-one at most. Jackson had to be at least six-three, possibly six-four. How had I not noticed that before?I shook my head as I approached his ass
