HANNAH’S POV:

A WEEK LATER:

I doubt anyone in the history of time had ever been able to move as fast as we had in just a week. Elijah had a house uptown, and he had managed to move all his belongings in there and in less than a week we were in a new mansion.

It was a gorgeous mansion, it could almost be mistaken for a palace. It had a beautiful fountain right in front and a luxurious entrance, each room had the most beautiful chalnders designs I had ever come across. The atmosphere smelt like

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   The Flashy Red Car

MARY'S POV: I couldn't help but wonder if Alistair had ever really seen this version of me during our marriage. I wondered if he had ever bothered to look past the kitchen apron, the tired eyes, and my flour-covered hands to see the actual woman standing right in front of him. I wondered if he had ever truly known me at all, or if he just wanted a quiet maid to keep his house clean. I forced myself to push the thought out of my head. It didn't matter anymore. None of it did. What really mattered was that I was still breathing. I was still standing on my own two feet. I was still fighting for my daughter. Marl picked me up thirty minutes later in a ridiculously flashy sports car. The car was red. A bright, loud, completely obnoxious shade of red. It was the exact type of car that begged for attention, that made every single person turn their head at the traffic lights, and that made people stop dead in their tracks on the sidewalk just to stare. The red paint gleamed under the

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   Mary Reborn

MARY'S POV:Next, I was taken straight to a high-end hair salon. The salon was hidden away on a side street, its big front windows frosted over, its interior feeling like a completely different world of soft lights and different colors. The walls were painted a pale cream, the floors were so cleaned until you could see your own reflection, and the air smelled like a mix of lavender and fresh lemons. Soft classical music played low from hidden speakers in the ceiling. The stylist, a older woman with a bit of silver running through her hair and kind eyes, greeted us right at the front door and led me over to a big leather chair that felt more like a throne. The mirrors were framed infact with gold, the long counters were white marble, and the tools were all spotless under the warm overhead lights.I ended up sitting in that chair for hours. They washed my hair first, the warm water running over my scalp while the stylist's fingers massaged my head in slow, relaxing circles. I closed

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   The Power of Appearance

MARY'S POV: He stepped forward, took me gently by the shoulders, and guided me right in front of the large mirror so I had to look at myself properly. The reflection staring back at me was almost completely unrecognizable. Standing there was a woman wearing a stunning champagne satin dress, carrying a pearl handbag, with delicate gold strappy heels on her feet. The rich fabric caught the store light which was shimmering with every small move I made, and the pearls on the bag glowed softly against the cloth. I looked like someone who had just stepped straight out of a high-fashion magazine. I stared at my reflection, feeling slightly stunned. The woman in the glass looked young, polished, and powerful, a complete stranger to me. She looked like someone who belonged in a world of private cocktail parties and big big galas, not someone who had spent the last few years hiding quietly in the dark shadows of a failing marriage. The dress hugged my frame comfortably in all the right plac

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   Playing Their Game

MARY'S POV:I found his logic both amusing and confusing at the same time. I gestured with my hand for him to keep talking. My arms were still crossed tight over my chest, my posture defensive, but my curiosity was definitely piqued now. The champagne dress still hung between us, waiting for my verdict."I'm listening," I said. "But what does any of this have to do with changing my clothes? Do the primary teachers only talk to parents who show up in fancy dinner dresses?""Actually, this isn't a formal evening gown," Marl said, pausing as his eyes scanned the cut of the fabric in his hands. "Forget that for a second. Think of what you wear as a parent's calling card. I noticed how things worked the last time I attended an event at that place. All the parents at this specific school love to compete with each other over every little detail. They wear expensive dress shoes and custom tailored outfits just to go for a casual morning jog, and they show off limited-edition watches while

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   The Makeover

MARY'S POV: "This is way too much," I said, staring at myself in the large fitting room mirror. "No, that's called being fashionable," Marl called back from the velvet couch outside. "Now put it on, please." My beautiful self and Marl were at an upscale designer boutique, and I was currently trying on my tenth outfit of the morning. The store was filled with soft, warm lighting which was also gleaming at the glass surfaces, the air smelling faintly of expensive perfume on different products. Racks of designer clothes stretched out in every direction, each piece looking more elegant and fragile than the last. The sales assistants had long since retreated to the background, sensing that Marl had completely taken over the operation and that this was a private affair. I really hadn't expected any of this to happen when I woke up. After Marl told me last night that he had a real solution to my daughter's problems, he made a few quick phone calls and said a close friend of his could

  • The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back)   Just Listen to Me

MARY'S POV:I grabbed another spoon, dipped it in the pot, and put a tiny drop on my tongue. Sure enough, he was totally right. The soup tasted absolutely awful, a weird, sweet, hot mess that made my stomach turn right over. The flavors were completely fighting each other, the heavy sugar ruining the meat broth and turning the whole thing into a sweet disaster. I had been so lost in my own head about my daughter that I had reached for the wrong glass jar and poured in half a cup of sugar, and ruined the whole dinner. My daughter was going to be sitting at this table in fifteen minutes, and I didn't have enough food left in the fridge to start a new meal from scratch. I stood there staring down at the bubbling pot, my brain frozen as I tried to figure out how to fix it. I could try dumping in a ton of salt or pouring in water to drown out the sweet taste, but it was a total goner. It was always going to taste terrible, just a big visual reminder that I couldn't even keep my head clea
