Minutes turned into hours.

At some point, exhaustion had won, and Lara had dozed off on the couch. But the sharp ringing of the doorbell stirred her awake.

Her heart leaped into her throat as she shot up, blinking away the drowsiness. The room was dark, save for the dim glow of the TV screen.

She glanced at the clock. 2:13 AM.

Who could be visiting this late?

With a deep sigh, she pushed herself off the couch and made her way to the door. The doorbell rang again, more insistent this time. Her brows knitted together she hesitated for a moment. Peeking through the peephole, she was met with a familiar face.

Izek?

Without wasting another second, she unlocked the door and swung it open. Her eyes widened at the sight before her.

There, standing under the dim glow of the porch light, was Izek—one of Lucas’s close friends. And beside him, slumped against his shoulder, was Lucas himself. Disheveled. Drunk. Completely wasted.

Lara’s stomach twisted at the sight.

“Hey,” Izek greeted, offering an awkward smile. “Care to help?”

Lara’s gaze dropped to Lucas, and her heart clenched. His normally crisp shirt was wrinkled, the top buttons undone. His usually sharp eyes were half-lidded, unfocused. His face was flushed from alcohol.

“What happened? Why is he like this?” she asked, stepping forward to help support Lucas’s weight as they guided him inside.

Izek exhaled sharply. “I don't think it's my story to tell. I’m sorry, Nics.” he said grimly, his expression dark.

That didn’t sit well with her.

As they settled Lucas onto the couch, she stole a glance at Izek and noticed the tension in his jaw. His hands clenched into fists at his sides, and Lara didn’t miss the frustration simmering in his eyes as he glared at Lucas.

“He’s my friend, but right now, I really want to beat the shit out of him,” Izek muttered under his breath. “What an asshole.”

Lara’s brows furrowed. “What happened?” she pressed, her voice laced with both confusion and concern.

Izek exhaled sharply and shook his head. “Forget it.” he ran a hand through his hair, his anger momentarily giving way to something softer when he met her gaze. “You're too good for him, you know that?”

Lara’s blinked, taken aback.

“What?”

“Never mind,” he muttered with a sigh. “Anyway, I should go. You don’t need to take care of him—just leave him be. He deserves it.”

Lara opened her mouth to respond, but Izek had already patted her shoulder lightly. “You don’t have to see me off. Just lock the door.”

And with that, he walked out, leaving her alone with the drunken mess that was her husband.

Lara’s gaze slowly dropped to Lucas, sprawled out on the couch, his chest rising and falling with slow, uneven breaths.

A whirlwind of emotions crashed through her—anger, worry, disappointment.

She clenched her fists.

What the hell happened tonight?

He had been out drinking while she sat here, waiting, worrying.

And for what?

Her chest tightened painfully. She wanted to shake him awake, demand an explanation, yell at him for making her feel like this.

But even if she asked, would he answer?

Would he even care?

She let out a bitter laugh, tilting her head back as frustration bubbled within her.

Of course not.

Lucas had never cared before. Why would he start now?

With a heavy sigh, she turned away, intending to leave him there for the night. She refused to stay here, hovering over him like a fool. But just as she took a step away—

A hand shot out, weakly wrapping around her wrist.

  • The Unwanted Wife   Chapter 84: Quiet Little Routine

Monday came, and just like he promised, Reagan began driving Lara to school every morning. And every afternoon, he’d be there waiting to bring her home. It quickly became their quiet little routine. Out of gratitude, Lara would always prepare something simple for him each morning—usually sandwiches, sometimes a small bento, always paired with a tumbler of coffee she brewed herself. It wasn’t much, but it was her way of saying thank you. Reagan never said much about it, but he always accepted it with a smile, a soft “Thanks”, and then take a sip of the coffee like it was the best part of his day. And somehow, that small exchange became the gentlest part of her mornings. But not everything was peaceful. Lucas remained persistent. Gifts continued to arrive at school. A bouquet. A box of chocolates. Designer gifts. Food deliveries. She never touched any of them. Just like before, Lara would throw the gifts into the trash after class, no matter how expensive they looked. As for the

Sunday arrived quitely. It was afternoon, and Lara sat cross-legged on the carpeted floor of her living room, her laptop and papers spread out before her. She had spent most of the day finalizing her lesson plans for the upcoming week. She was nearly finished, but decided to set them aside for now because she had plans to go to church. It had been a while since she last attended a mass, and though she didn’t consider herself deeply religious, something in her heart told her she needed this more than ever. A little peace. A moment to breathe. Maybe even clarity.Just as she began gathering her things to get ready, her phone buzzed with a message.Reagan: Got any plans today?Lara smiled slightly and texted back.Lara: Yeah, I’m heading to the afternoon mass.A few seconds later, his response popped up.Reagan: Didn’t expect you to be the religious type. She chuckled and typed a reply.Lara: I’m not, really. But today, I just feel like I need it more than anything else. There was a sho

After finishing their grocery run, Reagan loaded the boxes into the trunk of his car while Lara slid into the passenger seat. Her stomach growled just as Reagan buckled in and started the engine.“I’m starving,” she muttered, rubbing her belly with a frown.Reagan glanced at her, amused. “Want to stop somewhere to eat?”Lara’s face lit up. “Jollibee,” she said without hesitation. He chuckled at her immediate enthusiasm. “Alright, if that’s what you want, Jollibee it is.”He pulled out of the parking lot and drove toward the nearest branch. Once they arrived, the iconic red and yellow storefront greeted them. Inside, families filled the tables, chattering, kids squealing, and the familiar scent of fried chicken wafting in the air.“I’ll line up,” Reagan offered. “You can go find us a table.”“Okay. Thanks.”Lara weaved weaved through the crowded restaurant until she found a table by the fiberglass wall. Warm sunlight streamed in, casting a soft glow over the space. She settled into her

It was Saturday morning, and Lara stood in her kitchen, staring at the nearly empty shelves of her pantry. No more coffee, barely enough rice, some instant noodles and her fridge was mostly a graveyard of forgotten condiments and a lone egg. She had been so distracted lately she hadn’t even noticed how empty her kitchen had become. She sighed. “Well, guess it’s grocery day.”Lara had just finished changing into jeans and a soft blue blouse when her phone buzzed. A message from Reagan lit up the screen.Reagan: Good morning. Got any plans today?Lara paused, thumb hovering over the screen. She hesitated for a second before replying.Lara: Just heading out to do some grocery shopping. Why?A moment later, another message came in.Reagan: I’ll come with you.She blinked at the screen. She quickly typed again.Lara: It’s fine. You don’t have to. I don’t want to bother you.But his reply came almost instantly.Reagan: You’re not a bother, Lara. Besides, we agreed on this fake relationship

Friday afternoon. Lara stood in front of Reagan’s door, her heart pounding so loud it echoed in her own ears. She hadn’t texted him. Hadn’t warned him she was coming. She hadn’t trusted herself not to chicken out or send some awkward half-explanation via text. It had to be in person. Even if every fiber of her stomach twisted in knots. Taking a deep breath, she reached out and pressed the doorbell. A few seconds passed before the door swung open. Reagan stood there, casually dressed in a black sleeveless shirt and gray sweatpants, hair slightly tousled as though he’d just gotten out of bed or finished a workout. For a brief second, her eyes—traitorous as ever—fell to his bare arms, catching the defined muscles flexing as he leaned against the door frame. She blinked, internally scolding herself. Get it together, Lara. Now is not the time to get distracted! She forced herself to focus, looking up at his face instead. Surprised flickered across Reagan’ face when he real

Without thinking twice, Lara called Lucas. He picked up almost immediately.[“Lara,”] he said, his voice careful, as if he already knew why she was calling.“What the hell are you doing?” she snapped, skipping any pleasantries. “Why are you suddenly backing out of the annulment?”There was a pause. Then, quietly, he said, [“I’m sorry.”]Lara’s eyes narrowed. Rage bubbled in her chest.“Sorry?” she laughed bitterly. “Seriously, Lucas? You said you’d go through with it! What kind of game are you playing now?”[“I’m not playing games,”] he said, his tone still maddeningly steady. [“And I’m not backing out completely. I just… want to renegotiate the terms.”]Her mouth fell open in disbelief.“You’re unbelievable!” she spat. “What the hell makes you think you can negotiate anything with me?”[“I know,”] Lucas replied, his voice faltering just slightly. [“I know I don’t have the right to ask for anything. But I don’t know what else to do. I’m desperate, Lara. I don’t want to lose you withou

The following days felt heavier than they should have.Despite telling Reagan she wouldn’t avoid him, Lara found herself doing exactly that. It wasn’t intentional at first—at least, that’s what she told herself. But each time her phone buzzed and his name appeared on the screen, her chest tightened. Sometimes she opened the messages only to stare at them blankly, unsure how to reply. Other times, she couldn’t even bring herself to look. She started adjusting her routine. Avoiding the lobby around the time she guessed he might be coming or going. Leaving her unit before sunrise to skip any possible encounter in the underground parking lot. Ordered delivery food in to avoid stepping out altogether. It felt cowardly—and childish. She knew it wasn’t fair to him. And she hated herself for it.It wasn’t that she wanted to hurt him. Far from it.But she didn’t know how to face him. Not after that night. Not after the look in his eyes… not after the way her heart had stuttered in her chest.R

  • The Unwanted Wife   Chapter 77: Willing To Wait

Lara could hardly breathe. The world felt too quiet. Too still. As if time had stopped in that moment, and all she could hear was the echo of his voice inside her head. Her hand burned where his lips had touched, and her entire body trembled—overwhelmed, confused, and completely disarmed. She couldn’t think. Not clearly. Not with him standing so close, his striking green eyes looking at her like she was the only woman in the world. Her heart pounded erratically in her chest, and her thoughts scattered like leaves in the wind. This couldn’t be real. For so long, she had felt invisible… overlooked in her own marriage. She had gotten used to being the second choice—the unwanted wife. And now here he was—Reagan. Confessing that he liked her. Looking at her like she was something worth cherishing. She wasn’t ready for this.“I... Reagan... I don’t—” she finally managed, her voice breathless, caught somewhere between confusion and panic. But he gently cut her off. “It’s okay,” he said, his

Lara turned to him, startled. “What?” Reagan shifted to face her completely. The city lights framed his tall silhouette, casting gold highlights along his jawline and cheekbones. There was no trace of humor or teasing in his green eyes as they locked onto hers. “I mean it,” he said, voice low and even. “If you really want to make it clear to him that you’ve moved on... then show him. Let him see that he doesn’t have any place in your life anymore. And if pretending you’ve found someone new is what it takes to make him back off for good… then I can be that person, Lara.” For a moment, Lara was speechless. The suggestion hit her like a wave, knocking the breath out of her lungs. Her mouth parted, but no words came out. She stared at him, trying to decipher the meaning behind his offer. Was it pity? Was it just a favor? Or something else entirely? Her mind raced to find reason, logic—but nothing made sense. Reagan must’ve noticed the storm behind her eyes. He took a step clos
