Chapter 2

Author: Echo
"You bought me to do chores?"

Adrian stood on the balcony, mop in hand, his voice laced with disbelief.

"Of course not!" I shook my head, looking at him seriously.

His eyes lit up.

"You're also my part-time bodyguard. You have to keep me safe," I said, patting his arm. "I've been dealing with a stalker lately, and I need protection. You're strong, well-built, and I hear vampires are powerful fighters. It's a perfect fit."

His head drooped again.

For a second, he looked less like a vampire and more like a big, sad dog, his ears flopping down.

"Also, I'm too busy with work to do housework," I added, pointing at the dust and piles of laundry. "I'll be counting on you for all this."

He lowered his head silently and started mopping.

Maybe he was trying to prove his worth, because he suddenly moved with vampire speed, becoming a blur as he zipped across the balcony.

Then came a deafening CRASH.

My antique vase lay in a thousand pieces.

Adrian stood in the middle of the shards, looking at me with a miserable expression.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..." He bent down to pick up the pieces, cutting his finger on a sharp edge.

"Don't move!" I grabbed his hand. "The vase doesn't matter. Don't hurt yourself."

He looked up at me, his eyes filled with anxiety. "Are you going to send me back?"

"Of course not," I sighed. "Just take your time. There's no rush."

Over the next week, Adrian learned quickly.

He figured out the dishwasher, learned how to sort recycling, and even managed to make simple meals. Though he didn't need to eat, he always had dinner ready for me when I got home from work.

Every night, he'd be waiting outside the hospital to walk me home, silently following three steps behind me.

The stalker never showed up again.

I was more than pleased with him.

The only awkward thing was how he always stared at my neck.

Every time I turned my head, I'd catch him with his eyes turning red, his breathing shallow, fangs peeking out from between his lips.

And he never wore a proper shirt at home, always doing his chores shirtless, with just an apron to cover him.

"Adrian, please put a shirt on," I said, pointing at his bare chest.

"But it's hot in here," he said, looking down at himself. "And I'm just cooking in an apron. It’s not like I’m completely naked."

"That's not the point!"

"But I read online that humans like this," he said, confused. "You don't like it?"

I was about to give him a firm 'no' when he leaned in closer, his voice a low, seductive murmur. "But I see you blush every time."

"Th-that's just a normal physiological reaction!" I turned my face away. "Anyone would blush at a sight like that!"

"So you admit you like it?"

"...Put a shirt on."

He smiled and obediently went to his room to get dressed.

But he came back wearing only a thin, white button-down, with only the bottom two buttons fastened.

"Is this better?" he asked, his face a perfect mask of innocence.

I completely surrendered.

What was even more awkward was that several times, when I got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, I could hear his suppressed moans coming from the shower.

My professional instincts told me his skin hunger was getting worse. I must have been too busy with work and had neglected his psychological needs.

To make up for it, I decided to let him sleep with me tonight.

"Adrian," I said, sitting on my bed and patting the space next to me. "You can sleep here tonight."

He stood at the door, his eyes greedily sweeping over my bed. "Can I really?" he asked, his voice raspy.

"Of course," I said, lifting the covers. "Come on."

He carefully climbed onto the bed, lying stiffly on top of the covers, keeping at least two feet of distance between us.

"Don't be so formal." I just went for it and wrapped my arms around him.

His body was cool, like a walking ice pack. On this stuffy summer night, he was a natural air conditioner.

"So cool," I sighed contentedly, burying my face in his neck.

His whole body went completely still.

I quickly drifted off in the comfortable chill, completely oblivious to his ragged, heavy breathing.

Adrian strode in and shut the door behind him.He walked toward me, step by step. I backed away, step by step, until I stumbled and fell back onto the sofa."You've lost weight," he said, staring at me, a flash of pain in his eyes. "You look pale."He stood over me, looking down. Then he took my phone, and right in front of me, he opened the app and canceled the werewolf bodyguard order."You'd rather have a shedding dog than me?"His voice was low and dangerous, but the blood bond betrayed him. Beneath the anger, there was a desperate craving and a deep, profound hurt."I-I just..." I stammered."You thought I would kill you?" He suddenly laughed, but it was a broken, ugly sound. "Because you saw me when I was weak?"I didn't dare to speak."Do you have any idea what these last three months have been like for me?" He knelt, bringing his face level with mine. "Every day, I've been fighting the hunger from the bond. Every night, I dream of you, only to wake up and find you gone.""I'm s

Seattle. Three months later. My new job at the hospital was going well.No one here knew me, and no one knew about my past with the Vandermere Prince.I lived in a state of constant anxiety, always watching my back. But three months passed, and no assassins came for me.I gradually let my guard down.Maybe Adrian didn't care about an insignificant human like me after all.For a vampire prince, I was probably just an accidental footnote during his amnesia.A strange sense of loss washed over me at the thought.Sometimes, late at night, I would miss his cold yet passionate embrace, the thrill that shot through me whenever his fangs pierced my skin. And the pleasure he gave me every time he was inside me.I quickly suppressed those feelings. This was for the best. If he didn't come for me, I was safe. But I still needed a bodyguard.I opened the supernatural beings app. This time, I was smarter. If vampires were too dangerous, I would just switch species.I scrolled through the "Werewolf

My mind exploded.I had ordered a vampire prince to do my chores.I had made him wash my underwear.I had made him unclog the toilet. And I had commanded him in bed to "please me."I was so screwed. He was going to kill me.I rushed back to my office and searched for every article I could find on the Vandermere Prince."BLOODY PURGE: SEVENTEEN TRAITORS EXECUTED IN THREE DAYS.""INSIDER REVEALS PRINCE FORBIDS ANY MENTION OF HIS WHEREABOUTS DURING HIS DISAPPEARANCE.""ALL HUMANS WHO WITNESSED HIS VULNERABLE STATE HAVE VANISHED."My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the mouse. The cold, ruthless prince described in the news was a completely different person from the Adrian I knew—the one who got scratched by cats and whimpered for comfort. No, I had it all wrong. The sweet, clumsy Adrian was the disguise. The more I thought about it, the more terrified I became. My trembling fingers opened a supernatural consulting website."Hypothetically, if someone accidentally formed a t

Over the next few days, Adrian started to change. He still made breakfast and picked me up from work, but he started leaving early and coming home late. His movements became secretive. I also started noticing well-dressed men in black suits around the neighborhood, their faces grim, always lurking in the shadows."Where have you been going lately?" I finally asked."I've recovered some memories," he answered curtly. "Found a few family members.""That's wonderful!" I was happy for him. "When can I meet them?""Soon," he said, avoiding my gaze. "There are still some things I need to handle."He also became more and more unrestrained in bed.He used to be gentle, always carefully asking for my consent. Now he was forceful and dominant, pinning me down in all sorts of places—the kitchen counter, in front of the bathroom mirror, even on the chaise lounge on the balcony. His eyes would turn a deep crimson, fangs piercing my skin, covering me in his marks."Adrian, be gentle..." I'd push aga

It was a message from Adrian.A picture. He had managed to wash my haughty Persian cat, who was now sitting meekly in the bathtub, perfectly clean."I got Princess all clean. She scratched me three times," he wrote, adding a pouting emoji.I laughed out loud and closed the news article.Impossible.The Vandermere Prince, rumored to be so ruthless that the entire vampire world trembled at his name, couldn't possibly be my sweet, simple vampire who bathed cats and got scratched in the process. The following days were as sweet as a honeymoon.Adrian was always there to pick me up from the hospital after work. If I talked to a male colleague for too long, he’d just stand there, staring at me with those sad, resentful eyes, like a neglected puppy.Later, back home, he would pin me against the door, his gaze dark. "Chloe, you spoke to that man for twenty-three minutes today.""It was a work thing," I'd explain."I don't care," he'd say, his nose tracing my skin, as if marking his territory.

I woke up the next morning sore all over.My body was covered in dark, bruised kisses and the faint bite marks Adrian had left when he couldn't hold back. But he had been careful, never rough. On the contrary, it had felt incredible. He'd even sweetly carried me to the shower to clean me up afterward. I marveled at how attentive his "service" was.Adrian was already up, standing in the kitchen in his apron, making breakfast. His back was a canvas of the scratches I’d left last night, and the sight made me blush. Sunshine streamed through the window, catching in his dark brown hair, creating a scene of impossible domestic bliss."Breakfast is ready," he said, setting a plate on the table before lifting me into a chair.I forked a piece of egg. "Adrian, I have a question for you.""What is it?""Were you always this… attentive and clingy with the humans who bought you before?"The words were out before I could stop them. It sounded like I was jealous. He froze for a second, then shook hi
