Chapter 3

Autor: Butterworth
She looked at me strangely. "Oh my God, how can you still be sleeping? The procedure is about to begin. We need to get to the hospital."

I glanced at the time. Six hours left.

Then I met my mother's anxious eyes, and a flicker of fear rose in me.

"Mom… will it hurt? I'm scared…"

She suddenly turned, her gaze sharper than I had ever seen.

"What did you say? Are you trying to back out?"

I let out a bitter smile. "No. I just… want to have a meal you cook for me after it's over."

She froze for a moment, then immediately put on a smile. "Elizabeth, ever since your dad passed away, I've only had you and Elena. She's been frail since she was little. I'm really afraid that she might…"

"It's okay, Mom. I understand."

After all, she only loved Elizabeth. I was never important.

On the way to the hospital, Elena hooked her arm through mine, leaning close to whisper in my ear, "Mom is mine. Even Kael is mine. Family or love—you don't deserve either."

As soon as she finished, she deliberately shoved me toward the middle of the road.

Instinctively, I grabbed her wrist and ended up dragging her down with me.

Elena let out a piercing scream. In the next instant, Kael appeared at her side, pulling her into his arms to protect her.

I hit the ground hard, my knees scraping open.

Kael held Elena, soothing her, completely oblivious to what had happened to me. Or perhaps he noticed—and simply didn't care.

A hollow smile tugged at my lips as the last trace of hope in my heart finally vanished.

Only after calming Elena did Kael seem to remember me. A flicker of panic crossed his face.

"Elizabeth! Are you alright? Are you hurt?"

I looked at him coldly and said nothing.

He fidgeted, trying to explain. "Elena was a bit too frightened. Everything happened so suddenly—she was closer to me, so I just reacted… You… seem fine?"

I pushed myself up and cut him off sharply. "I'm fine. Let's go. I don't have time."

By the time we arrived at the hospital, I had only two hours left to live.

Before the procedure began, my mother and Kael stayed by Elena's side, comforting and encouraging her.

"Elena, don't be afraid. I'll be waiting outside the whole time. The procedure will definitely succeed—you'll have a healthy body again." My mother spoke to her with tender affection. "When you recover, I'll cook all your favorite dishes."

At that moment, Kael took out a sparkling necklace. "I'll be waiting for you."

Their attention was entirely on Elena. Not once did they think of me—the one who would suffer even more from this procedure.

I thought I had grown used to being ignored. But at the end of my life, watching this scene still felt like knives carving into my heart. So I finally voiced the question that had been weighing on me.

"If I die… will you be sad?"

My mother froze, as if only just remembering I was there. A trace of guilt flickered across her face.

But once she processed my words, her expression hardened with anger.

"What nonsense are you talking about? Who talks about dying like that? After this, you'll just need some time to rest and recover. You've always been much healthier than your sister."

"You'll be fine. You've always been in good health," Kael added gently, taking my hand.

Bitterness filled my chest. When I was gone, he would probably be happy. Then he could finally be with Elena openly, without restraint.

I took one last lingering look at my mother… at Kael… then turned and walked resolutely into the operating room.

The blinding lights slowly dimmed, and the world sank into darkness.

In that final moment, one thought lingered in my mind.

If my mother ever discovered that it was me who had donated her a kidney five years ago… If she learned that my sister had taken credit for it… If she realized how my sister had slandered and suppressed me all these years…

Would she cry for my death? Would she regret the way she had treated me?

But what would regret matter? I wouldn't be there to see it.

If there were another life, I would never want to meet them again.

"How could you do this? Elizabeth is your sister. Why would you try to take her life?"Clutching her swollen cheek, Elena lifted her head. She had never been struck like this before. The look in her eyes as she stared at our mother was filled with venom."Why does she get to be the older sister? We're twins—we look exactly the same. So why is she better than me? You all like her more! If that's the case, you should've just had her. Why did you even give birth to me?"Our mother stood there, stunned."When have we ever treated you poorly? Your father and I have always been fair. And after we misunderstood Elizabeth, we treasured you even more. What more could you possibly want?""Why should I be satisfied?" Elena shrieked, grabbing her hair. "So what if I have your love? Why does she get to find a man like Kael? Even without you, there would still be someone who loves her!"Her voice rose into a hysterical scream."She should have died a long time ago! Everything she has should'v

"The kidney in your body was transplanted from Elizabeth, and her other kidney is now inside Elena! You both took Elizabeth's kidneys… and her life along with them!"With a loud crash, Elena knocked over the bowl of porridge on the table.Clutching her stomach in panic, she tried to divert her mother's attention."Mom, my stomach hurts—go call a doctor for me, quickly!"But the woman who had always indulged her stood frozen in place, her face deathly pale, as if she hadn't heard a word."You're saying Elizabeth is dead? That's impossible! Are you helping her deceive us?"As if grasping at a final shred of certainty, she let out a cold laugh."If she only had one kidney, why would she agree to donate one to Elena? This must be another one of her tricks. And my kidney—Elena donated it. I saw the ugly surgical scar on Elena myself. There's no way that was fake! Elizabeth didn't have a single scar on her!"Kael looked at her with pity."When I first met her, I treated her injuries

"Are you saying Elena only ever had one kidney to begin with?"The doctor corrected him, "No. Elizabeth must have donated a kidney to someone before. That's why she only had one left. At the time, we didn't want her to die in vain and waste a viable organ, so we proceeded with the transplant."She looked aggrieved as she continued, "You didn't listen to my report back then. You all followed the other patient and even gave strict orders not to be disturbed. We had no choice but to place Elizabeth's body in the morgue first."After hearing this, Kael collapsed to the ground, all strength leaving his body. He muttered hoarsely,"She only had one kidney… and I still forced her to donate it. I'm the one who killed her…"Then, as if something suddenly occurred to him, he lifted his head sharply."Who did she donate her kidney to before?"No one answered.Left with no choice, Kael summoned his follower and ordered, "Investigate it immediately. I want everything about the kidney transpl

But to my surprise, Kael refused."Don't bring this up again. My wife will only ever be Elizabeth. I'm going next door to see if she's awake."He walked into my hospital room, but I wasn't there. He stopped a doctor and demanded, "Where is Elizabeth? She just finished the kidney donation surgery. Why isn't she in her room?"The doctor hesitated for a moment before replying, "The kidney donor? She… died during the operation."Kael's body trembled. He stared at her in disbelief. "What did you say?"The doctor repeated herself. After a brief pause, she added, "I was about to tell you right after the surgery, but none of you seemed concerned about her. You all went straight after the other patient."Kael staggered back two steps before barely managing to steady himself. He muttered under his breath, "That's impossible… I don't believe it!"Then he turned and ran toward the operating room. But it was empty—there was no one inside. He searched frantically until he finally found me i

I pulled myself out of my memories. Watching the scene unfold before me, my heart tightened. I wanted to know—after they learned of my death, how would they react? The doctor removed her gloves and said wearily, "The surgery was a success. The kidney has been transplanted smoothly. As for the donor…"Before she could finish, the assistant had already wheeled Elena out of the operating room. The three of them rushed over at once, too preoccupied to hear the rest of what the doctor had to say.Meanwhile, my body was discarded carelessly in the cold morgue.A sudden wave of sorrow washed over me. No one had cared about me when I was alive. Even in death, there was no one to claim my body. Was I really that unlikable?I had given way again and again, carefully trying to please them. I had wanted nothing—only that my mother… and Kael… might love me a little more. But even in death, I gained nothing. At that moment, my mother and Kael stood anxiously by Elena's bedside. I watched as the doctor's scalpel cut into my body, only for her to find a single kidney. She couldn't help but cry out in shock."Why is there only one kidney?"Then her expression darkened, and she snapped, "This is absurd! With only one kidney, how could she donate it? This is murder!"At that moment, her assistant panicked."This is bad—the patient's heart has stopped! What's going on?"Only then did they discover the lethal drug I had taken. The toxin had already spread throughout my body—there was no saving me.The assistant looked at a loss."Doctor… what should we do now?"The doctor shook her head regretfully."Proceed with the transplant. The patient is already dead. There's no point in letting the kidney go to waste."I drifted out of the operating room and into the corridor. My mother and Kael were waiting anxiously outside. My mother was deeply worried."Why isn't the surgery over yet? They've been in there for so long!"Kael tried to reassure her."Don't wor
