Winter’s POV

That caught me off guard. “A better work environment?”

Nessa seemed to realize too late how her words had sounded. Her fingers tightened together in front of her. “Yes, Your Highness.”

I studied her more closely. “What’s wrong with working in the palace?”

“Nothing,” she answered quickly, although her eyes seemed to say otherwise. “Working in the palace is probably the best position a servant like me could have.”

She hesitated before continuing.

“Servants outside the palace don’t re

Winter’s POV “Princess.” I had barely reached my bedroom door when Nessa rushed toward me. Before I could even ask what was wrong, she caught my arm and leaned close to my ear. “Prince Mavros is inside.” I froze as Nessa glanced nervously at the closed door behind her. “He has been waiting for you for quite some time.” My stomach dropped. Of all the moments Mavros could suddenly decide to come looking for me, it had to be now. I was exhausted. Not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. My head still felt heavy from everything I had learned, and all I had wanted was to return to my room, change my clothes, and be alone long enough to think. Instead, Mavros is here waiting for me. My exhaustion vanished beneath a rush of panic. I looked over my shoulder at Lara and Dane. That only made my nerves worse. Lara was still dressed in the plain clothes she had worn to pass as my slave, and Dane looked nothing like the way he normally dressed inside the palace. My own

Winter’s POVThe carriage ride back to the palace felt nothing like the ride into the city. Before, I had been curious, excited even, but now I could barely look outside. I sat silently with my hands clenched beneath my cloak while the wheels rolled over the stone road. Again and again, the same words echoed in my head. Another blood bag. I could still see the old man standing on the platform with his head lowered while vampires laughed at him. I could still hear them saying he was too old. Too weak. Not worth the price. And then, when no one wanted him, they had simply decided to drain his blood. As though that were the natural conclusion to a life no one wanted to buy. I swallowed hard and turned toward the window. The city passed by outside, but I no longer saw it the same way. Earlier, I had thought the streets looked almost peaceful. Now all I could think about was what existed beneath that normal appearance. Humans being sold. Humans being owned. Humans working their e

Winter’s POV After the young woman was led away, the auctioneer immediately turned toward the remaining humans. “Next!” he shouted. There was no hesitation in his voice. No pause after watching a woman being handed over to a stranger. He simply moved on to the next person as though this were nothing more than another ordinary day of work. Maybe it was. I stared at him. How many humans had this man sold before today? Hundreds? Thousands? How often did he stand on this platform and put a price on someone's life? One of the guards grabbed the elderly man by the arm and brought him onto the platform. The excitement from the crowd faded almost instantly. The old man looked frail. His back was slightly hunched, his gray hair thin, and the clothes hanging loosely from his body made him appear even smaller than he already was. He kept his eyes lowered as he stood beneath the stares of dozens of vampires. The auctioneer cleared his throat. “Do not let his age fool you,” he announced.

Winter’s POVThe palace was already far behind us when I finally dared to look outside. I lifted the carriage’s curtain, only a little, just enough to peek outside without drawing attention. The sight made my chest tighten. We had actually done it. Sorin had gotten us out.I still didn’t know how he had managed to arrange everything so quickly. The carriage, our clothes, and passing his orders to the guards at duty to let our carriage through without checking inside. We wouldn’t have escaped if it wasn’t for him. Without him, I would probably still be inside the palace trying to think of some ridiculous way to climb out of a window.I only hoped no one would find out that I left the palace. I don’t want Sorin to be in trouble all because of me. I pushed the thought aside and looked outside again. We were already entering the center of the kingdom. The streets were wider here, lined with tall stone buildings standing close together beneath steep roofs. Shops filled the lower floors,

Winter’s POVI marched down the corridor, my hands clenched tightly at my sides as fury burned through my veins. What was wrong with him?It had been such a simple request, yet he refused me without even considering it. Worse, he did not give me a proper reason. The more I thought about it, the angrier I became. Why was he so determined to keep me inside the palace?I wasn’t asking to leave the kingdom. I only wanted to see how the humans here lived. If everything was truly fine, then there should have been no reason for him to stop me.Unless there was something he didn’t want me to see.“Princess, is that it? Are you not going to do something?” Lara asked in almost a whisper as she hurried after me.I had stopped arguing because I knew nothing I will say would change Mavros’s mind. Trying to convince him would get me nowhere. It would be better to ask Sorin for help instead.“We need to talk to Sorin,” I said. “If there’s anyone who might help us, it will be him.”Mavros just doesn’

Mavros’s POV“Your Highness, this is what you asked for.”Cylas placed a small black box on my desk and carefully opened it, revealing a stone nestled against black velvet. At first glance, it looked like a piece of amber trapped inside crystal. The stone was no larger than my palm, smooth and oval, with a translucent surface the color of burning embers. Thin veins of gold and orange ran through its center, glowing faintly as though a tiny flame had been sealed within it.I picked it up, and warmth immediately spread across my palm.It wasn’t the harsh heat of a fire. It was gentle. Steady. Soothing. Within seconds, the warmth traveled through my fingers and up my arm, sinking pleasantly into my body.Cylas watched as I examined it. “That’s the finest firestone in existence, Your Highness.”I looked up at him.“According to the records, only three firestones of this quality exist in the entire world, and this is said to be the finest among them.” He let out a weary breath. “I went thr
