IVORY'S POV

We had been walking for thirty minutes now.

Through cracked pavements and across the dry school field, then down a shaded path I didn’t even know existed. I hadn’t said much—just followed in silence like some blindfolded kitten. But now my feet were aching, my bag strap had started to dig into my shoulder again, and my chest was blooming with that old, familiar sensation.

Regret.

What on earth was I thinking?

This was Daniel. Daniel freaking Connor. The same boy who tripped me in the hallways, turned my name into a joke, and made sure every insult hit where it hurt the most. The ring leader of the very wolves I’d been trying to avoid all year.

And here I was, blindly following him into God-knows-where like we were friends. Like he wasn’t the person I should’ve been running from.

A tight knot coiled in my stomach. Every step suddenly felt heavier.

“Where are we going?” I asked again, this time louder, firmer, pushing the shaky edge out of my voice.

Daniel didn’t stop walking—but he slowed.

And then… he turned.

He didn’t say anything, not right away. He just stepped closer. One step. Then another.

And just like that, my confidence dissolved into mist.

The space between us evaporated, and now he was standing right in front of me, the shadows of the trees catching the light in his dark eyes. His height was suddenly overwhelming, and I hated—hated—that my breath hitched just a little.

I tried to take a step back, but he mirrored it with a step forward.

Then, with one swift movement, he leaned down, bracing one arm beside my head against the concrete stair railings behind me. My back hit the cool stone. Trapped. My heart thudded like it was trying to escape.

His voice was low—velvety, mocking, dangerous.

“I told you, Ivory,” he said, eyes not breaking from mine. “Somewhere they wouldn’t find you. I meant it.”

My lips parted to speak but no sound came out.

He reached behind me, and before I could protest, unzipped my bag. My eyes widened. “Hey!”

But Daniel was already digging through it like it belonged to him.

“Oh, you did iron the suits,” he muttered with a mocking chuckle, pulling them out neatly. “I can’t believe you actually did that. You’re more useful than I thought.”

His words were meant to sting. And they did. But beneath the mocking tone, I saw something else flicker in his gaze. Something unreadable. Amusement? Surprise?

Still, a tiny part of me felt the relief bloom. He had noticed. I wouldn’t have to walk up to Blake and Arnold and the rest of the squad like a delivery girl from hell. He held the suits now.

“Thank you,” I murmured before I could stop myself.

A smile tugged at my lips. But then—

It happened.

His smirk deepened. And in one swift, horrifying motion, he tossed my entire bag over his shoulder—straight into the school’s murky pond.

Right into the middle. Right where it was deepest.

And full of frogs.

“No!” I screamed, bolting toward the edge. And just like that, Doctors Lana hard work all went to waste.

Sploosh.

The bag landed with a wet slap, bubbles rising to the surface before the bag began to sink like a rock. Frogs jumped out in panic, the smell of algae and moss slapping me across the face.

My mouth fell open.

“Are you insane?!” I shouted, turning to him.

Daniel only shrugged. “Oops.”

I could practically see the wicked satisfaction dancing in his eyes.

“You just lost the suits,” he added casually, leaning against a tree now, completely unbothered. “You’re screwed. Blake’s gonna have your head. That squad worships their uniforms.”

“You—”

“They’ll probably make you polish their shoes for the rest of the year. If they let you stay.”

My chest heaved. His words twisted something deep in me, and for once, the shame didn't just roll off. It stuck. It burned.

Without thinking—without a single rational thought—I kicked off my shoes and leapt straight into the pond.

I heard him shout something, but I was already in.

The water hit me like a slap. Cold. Thick. Full of green slimy weeds and croaking chaos. It closed over my head before I could scream, pulling at my skirt and dragging me down.

But I didn’t care.

I needed to get the suits. I had to get the suits.

My arms flailed, searching for the sinking bag—but then…

Panic set in.

I couldn’t feel the bottom.

The weight of my clothes dragged me lower. My lungs screamed for air, but when I opened my mouth, water rushed in. I kicked, tried to push up, but my limbs felt heavy, unresponsive.

I can’t swim.

The realization hit too late.

Everything blurred. My heartbeat pounded in my ears, slower and slower, until—

Darkness.

I sank.

I don’t remember how long it lasted—seconds? Years?

But suddenly, arms wrapped around me. Strong. Urgent. I was yanked upward through the water, gasping, limp.

Then air. Then ground.

Rough hands shook me, and I coughed once, but nothing came. Just more water choking my lungs.

“Come on, damn it—Ivory!” Daniel's voice.

Then—warm lips.

His mouth pressed to mine.

I gasped as he forced air into my lungs. Coughed. Choked.

More water came rushing out of me.

I blinked and the world snapped back into color. The trees. The pond. The awful taste of pond water in my mouth.

I was alive.

And Daniel—Daniel was still kissing me.

Or maybe not kissing—more like CPR, but still. His hands cradled my head, his body hovered over mine, dripping wet.

My chest heaved, and in pure panic and shame and confusion, I did the only thing I could think of.

I slapped him.

Hard.

His head snapped to the side.

A collective gasp echoed behind me.

That’s when I noticed it.

We had a crowd.

Half the school must’ve heard the splash because now there were at least twenty students watching. Phones out. Whispering. Laughing. Staring.

And me? Sopping wet. Straddled by Daniel Connor .My lips still tingling.

“I—I didn’t mean to—” I stammered, pushing away from him.

Daniel ran a hand through his dripping hair, then looked at me—really looked. His usual smirk was gone. In its place was something raw. Unreadable.

“You idiot,” he muttered, breathless. “You were going to drown over some stupid suits.”

I blinked at him, tears mixing with pond water.

He stood up, clothes sticking to his frame, water dripping from his sleeves.

Then, with a low voice, just for me, he added:

“You really are something else, Ivory.”

He walked away without another word, shoving through the crowd as if he couldn’t stand their gawking. People parted for him like he was Moses and they were the Red Sea.

I sat there, coughing and gasping and confused out of my mind.

And somewhere, deep down, beneath the embarrassment and cold—

I wasn’t sure if I hated him more…

Or wanted to understand him.

DANIEL’S POV The basement felt like a cage. Every second we sat here staring at screens, the police were getting closer to Ivory’s front door. I was pacing the length of the concrete floor, my shadow stretching long and jaded against the wall. I wanted to hit something. I wanted to find whoever put that bag in her locker and snap their hands off. "Okay, here is the crazy plot twist!" Zeke shouted, slamming his palm onto the desk. The sound echoed like a gunshot, making Ivory jump. "This individual? He is a ghost, Dan. He is one of those dark web bottom feeders. They take any job...framing kids, wiping servers, whatever as long as the crypto clears. Completely anonymous." I stopped pacing and stepped over to Zeke, loitering over his shoulder. I didn't care about the guy's resume. "I need a name, Zeke. Now." "In order to get the mastermind, we have to track this asshole down and make him fess the fuck up," Zeke muttered, his fingers blurring over the keys. "Give me a second... his

Ivory POV The city lights below suddenly felt like cold, mocking eyes. The sirens weren't just background noise anymore, they were a scream, tearing through the quiet of our perfect moment. The red and blue flashes danced across the hood of the Mustang, turning Daniel’s pale face into a flickering mask of shadows."A bag of what?" I whispered, my voice trembling so hard I could barely get the words out. "Daniel, what are you talking about? I haven't been near Stella’s locker in weeks!""It doesn't matter if you were there or not," Daniel hissed, his fingers flying across his phone screen as he ignored three incoming calls from unknown numbers. "They found a stash. A big one. High grade stuff, Ivory. And there’s a ledger. A notebook with your handwriting or a damn good fake of it listing names, dates, and amounts. It makes it look like you were the one supplying Stella and her crew. Like this whole 'feud' was just a cover for a deal gone wrong.""That is insane!" I cried, the world sp

  • The Vampire King's Mate   26. Framed

Ivory POV Returning to school after being discharged from the clinic felt like stepping into a movie set where I had somehow been recast as the lead. My ribs still gave me a sharp, stinging poke if I breathed too deeply, and the fading yellow bruise on my temple was a grim souvenir from the bathroom floor, but the atmosphere in the hallways had shifted completely. It wasn't just respect anymore. It was fear.As I walked down the main corridor, the sea of students parted like I was carrying a contagious disease. Groups that used to snicker at my thrift store jeans or whisper about my shifts at the diner suddenly went silent, their eyes dropping to the floor. About the thrift store...even my mom used to complain about them. She literally begs me to get designer brands but I am too stringent for that.I saw a girl drop her textbook, she scrambled to pick it up, glancing at me with wide, terrified eyes as if she expected me to summon a lightning bolt and strike her down right there by th

  • The Vampire King's Mate   25. Pop-pop Sounds

DANIEL POVI had managed to carry Ivory into her house, settle her onto the couch with about six different pillows, and pull a blanket over her legs. She looked small too small. Every time she winced, a fresh wave of guilt hit me. I needed to do something. Something "normal.""I am hungry," she whispered, her eyes half closed. "And my mom didn't leave anything prepped.""Stay put," I said, standing up and rolling up my sleeves. "I have got this.""Daniel, you don't even know where the kitchen is," she teased weakly."It’s the room with the stove, Ivory. I think I can manage."That was my first mistake: overconfidence. In the Connor household, "cooking" meant pressing a button on an intercom or sitting down at a mahogany table while a chef in whites presented a three-course meal. I had never actually made anything that didn't involve a microwave or a protein shaker.I stepped into the Walters' kitchen. It was small, warm, and smelled like cinnamon. I found a box of pasta and a jar of s

  • The Vampire King's Mate   24. Expelled?

Ivory POV I tried to drift back into the darkness, but the sharp smell of rubbing alcohol wouldn't let me. I slowly peeled my eyes open, only to find Dr. Lana….the school’s blunt, no-nonsense doctor standing over me. She was clicking her tongue against the roof of her mouth as she checked the dark purple bruises blooming on my arms.I quickly squeezed my eyes shut again, pretending to be unconscious. I wasn't ready to talk. I wasn't ready for the "I told you so.""Oh, give it up, Ivory," Dr. Lana sighed, her voice dry as sandpaper. "I saw those eyelids flicker. You might as well stay on that bed and start booking schedules for 'beat-up appointments' at this rate. You are becoming my most frequent customer."Only Dr Lana is the one physician in the world to see a patient as their customer. Most doctors would get fired or sued for daring to say this out but not her.I opened my eyes and looked at her, feeling a dull throb in my temple. "I am sorry, Dr. Lana," I croaked. "But it's not l

  • The Vampire King's Mate   23. Don't Move

Ivory POV I woke up expecting the world to still be on fire. I expected the whispers to follow me like a dark cloud and the laughter to ring in my ears the moment I stepped onto the school grounds. But as I walked through the front gates, something was... off.The atmosphere wasn't heavy or mocking. It was almost like the entire school had collective amnesia. People weren't pointing at me and whispering "easy" or "ho." Instead, I saw strange faces—people I didn't even know—grinning at me."Morning, Ivory!" a girl from the cheer leading squad called out, waving at me with a friendly smile."Hey, Ivory! Nice job on the hill!" a guy from the soccer team added, giving me a thumbs up as he passed.I stood there, frozen, awkwardly waving back like a confused pageant queen. My hand felt heavy, and my brain was spinning. What is happening? Did I step into a parallel universe where I’m actually popular?I didn't have much time to think before I was nearly tackled to the ground."IVORY!”Alic

The mirror didn't lie, but I wished it did. The girl staring back at me wasn't the Ivory Walter who scrubbed grease off diner tables or hid behind oversized sweaters in the back of the classroom. The dress was a masterpiece of malice and beauty. • The Vampire King's Mate   20. Save It

Ivory POV I skipped my first class. I couldn't do it. I couldn't walk into a room full of people who had spent the last hour dissecting a photo of my tongue down the throat of the school’s most dangerous guy.I retreated to the only place I felt safe….a cramped, flickering stall in the third-floor

  • The Vampire King's Mate   19. Disaster

"Quit staring at me like that," I said, my voice muffled by a mouthful of turkey and Swiss. I leaned back against the headrest, shamelessly licking a stray crumb from my bottom lip. The sandwich was a religious experience after the disaster that was Daniel’s party.Daniel didn't look away. He didn
