Chapter 2

Author: Ruddy Scholar
"Chloe, what the hell is wrong with you?!" Dad roared into the receiver. "You're earning your own income, and you're still stealing your brother's allowance? Have you no damn shame?!

"I'm warning you, give every cent back to him right now. If I hear you haven't transferred it by tomorrow, I'm coming home, and I'll teach you a lesson myself!"

"Dad, I swear I didn't…"

Click.

He hung up before I could finish.

Desperate to explain, I was about to dial back when Grandma's call flashed on my screen.

I picked up, my hand shaking.

Grandma's voice was ice-cold, sharp with disgust.

"Leo told me you stole his money. Pay him back right now, or don't bother calling me your grandmother ever again."

"Grandma…"

Beep.

Disconnected.

A wave of suffocating injustice crushed my chest. Tears instantly blurred my vision.

I had done nothing wrong, yet not a single person was willing to listen to a word I said.

"Pfft. Nice act."

Leo was leaning against his doorframe, sneering at me.

"Where was all this drama when you were spending my money? Serves you right!"

Mom walked out of the kitchen, glaring at me. "I raised you all these years, only to raise an ungrateful leech!"

Their relentless, baseless accusations snapped the last string of my self-control.

I stopped trying to defend myself. I gathered my shattered laptop, grabbed my bag, and stormed straight out the front door.

Nothing else mattered right now. I had to fix this computer and save my job.

Repairing the laptop wiped out a huge chunk of my savings. By the time I finally made it back, the house was pitch-black and silent.

Everyone had eaten and retired to their rooms. Not a single bite of dinner was saved for me.

I quietly made myself a bowl of instant noodles to stop the gnawing ache in my stomach, then immediately sat down to rebuild my lost files.

I worked straight through the night, finishing right around 3:00 AM. I sent the file to my manager the second it was done.

As the heavy tension finally left my shoulders, I unlocked my phone. My blood instantly ran cold.

Dad had flooded my chat with messages.

He claimed I was stubbornly refusing to refund Leo and said he’d handle me when he got home.

Attached to his rants was a screenshot Leo had sent him.

It was a bank ledger, plain as day.

Leo’s monthly incoming transfers were only $1,000.

I typed back immediately.

[I didn't steal his allowance, and I'm not giving him a single cent.]

The moment I hit send, a bright red exclamation mark popped up.

He had blocked me.

I sat there, completely stunned.

I had transferred $10,000 every single month. Yet Leo’s account genuinely showed only $1,000 coming in.

Where on earth did the other $9,000 vanish to?

The more I thought about it, the less sense it made.

Was the screenshot doctored?

After back-and-forth hesitation, I found Mr. Davis, Leo's college advisor, online and sent a private message.

[Hello, Mr. Davis. I'm Leo's older sister. I wanted to ask, is it true that he barely has enough to eat at school?]

He replied almost instantly, his tone full of disapproval.

[To be frank, Leo is living under severe financial stress. He often eats only one meal a day. Sometimes, after paying for course materials, he can't even afford that.]

[He's a growing young man, and college expenses add up quickly. Your family really should consider giving him a proper allowance.]

Leo hadn't been lying.

He really was surviving on just $1,000 a month.

Yet my monthly bank statements proved I sent $10,000 without fail.

The contradiction ate away at me. My mind spun in circles trying to make sense of the missing money.

Numbly, I opened a short video app and mindlessly scrolled through clips.

Suddenly, a video popped onto my feed.

My pupils dilated in shock.

Finally... I knew why $9,000 was vanishing every month.

At the police station, Leo was still idiotically insisting that he gave her the money voluntarily and that Angela wasn't to blame.Mom had already been suffocating from days of anger and stress. This final shock sent her straight to the hospital with acute exhaustion. When Dad got back home from the station, his suppressed fury finally exploded. He showed no mercy and beat Leo black and blue.During my lunch break a few days later, I bought some fresh fruit and went to visit Mom in the hospital. The ward smelled heavily of disinfectant. Mom lay in bed, looking drawn and exhausted. The second I walked in, she got straight to the point."Chloe, look at the state of our family. This $250,000 debt is crushing us. You must have some savings saved up. Take it out and help your brother clear his debt."I set the fruit basket on the bedside table, keeping my voice calm."I can't give you that money. My temples throbbed with a violent pulse. "And the other hundred thousand?""Well, since she was my girlfriend, I gave the rest to her to hold onto," he said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.I literally laughed out loud from pure outrage.Mr. Davis shook his head, caught between anger and pity. "How could you be so gullible? She took every single cent, but every drop of that debt is legally tied to your name."Leo snapped his head up, his eyes bloodshot. He lunged forward and grabbed my arm, begging desperately."Chloe, save me! Please, just give me some cash to pay off the loans! If Mom and Dad find out, I'm completely dead!"I yanked my arm out of his grip, completely unmoved. This wasn't my hole to fill. I had zero obligation to pay for his stupidity."I don't have money to pay your debts."Ignoring his desperate look, I pulled out my phone and dialed Dad, laying out every single fact without holding back."You need to get to the campus right now. Not a single person offered me a real, sincere apology. They knew they had wronged me, but in their eyes, family meant swallowing your pride and taking the hit.I stopped expecting them to find a conscience. Getting the bare minimum was enough.Without wasting another glance at their conflicted faces, I turned, walked into my bedroom, and slammed the door shut.Outside, Dad’s explosive scolding continued to ring out, punctuated by Grandma's endless, heavy sighs.True to his word, Dad transferred the exact amount for my laptop repair the next day. "A pretty girl bats her eyelashes, and they lose their minds..."Leo sat with his swollen face buried in his hands, completely silent.Mom remained rigid in the passenger seat, stealing awkward glances at me in the rearview mirror.Dad was fuming, taking all his anger out on Leo. Every few minutes, he would bark, "Do you have rocks in your head?!"The second we walked through the front door and flipped on the lights, Dad slammed himself onto the couch and pointed a finger right at Leo's face."Ten grand a month! She isn't even your girlfriend, and you willingly handed over nine thousand?!"We break our backs to pay for your college, and you use our money to play sugar daddy?!"Leo flinched, muttering under his breath, "I'm the victim here too...""You have the nerve to talk back?!" Right below each $10,000 deposit, a recurring auto-debit of $9,000 went out just minutes later. The recipient's name was printed in black and white.[Angela Zach.]My parents hovered over the screen, their eyes shrinking in total bewilderment."Angela Zach? Who the hell is that?!"Leo had been standing there acting smug and entitled, but the second he heard that name, every drop of color drained from his face. He scrambled forward, trying to grab my phone.Grandma hurried to her feet, dusting off her trousers as she pushed her way into the center."Angela Zach?! Is she a friend of yours, Chloe? Did you team up with some outsider to steal your brother's money?!"I let out a cold laugh and glanced up at Leo, who was practically squirming in his skin."Ask him. He knows her very well."Every head snapped toward Leo.His eyes darted around the store, his fingers frantically pulling at his shirt hem. He stammered for a while before squeezing out a response."I... I know her."D
