Was I supposed to feel shame? Was I supposed to try to explain? But explain what exactly? That I just made my step-brother come and vice versa? Wasn't it better to leave it unexplained? Just leave it floating in the air, thick and suffocating?

Axel still hadn't noticed Mom. He was still lost in whatever cloud he was in, his eyes still hazy. But then Mom shifted, just slightly, barely even noticeable and Axel was immediately on his feet, facing Mom, his body tensed. But when he saw who it was, he relaxed, releasing a breath.

“Mrs. Varkas,” he practically purred, shoving his hands into his pockets, relaxed.

Mom finally looked away from me, blinking at Axel. Her mouth opened and closed, no words coming out. Finally, she managed, “A-Axel.”

I couldn't see his face, but I knew there was a damn smirk on his face. “Yes, Mrs. Varkas, that’s me. How do you do?”

She stared at me, then at Axel, repeating it before she finally said, “W-what… Both of…” Well, it was more like stammering.

Axel glanced at me from his shoulder, and there, a grin. “Rosette, thank you for this memorable afternoon. I’ll see you later, sweetheart.”

Then he left, brushing past Mom without even a glance her way. Mom turned and stared at his back before she looked at me.

“What–”

“Let’s not make this more awkward than it already is, Mom,” I cut her off, grabbing my pants and tugging up my panties. I wore the pants with hurried hands, not even bothering to button it.

“‘More awkward than it already is?’” she repeated, moving to block my way when I tried to walk past her. “This isn't awkward, Rosette, it’s wrong!”

“Save the lectures, Mother. I know.”

“You know and still did it?” she spat, disgust evident in her voice. “You did it to mess with me, right?”

I gave her a hard look. “Why do you think everything I do is because of you? My world isn't centered on you, you know that? I make decisions and do things because I want to, not because I want to piss my mother that doesn't give a damn about me.”

I admit, back then when I was still naive I would do things to piss her off, to try and get her attention. I would work, and she would yell and yell. But I was no longer naive and I did things because I wanted to, right or wrong.

Mom’s face transformed, soft, yet not. “You think I don't give a damn about you?”

I raised an eyebrow. “I don't ‘think’ I ‘know.’”

“Rosette–”

“I have to go pack. This has been a lovely chat.”

Her expression shifted again—this time into confusion. “Pack? To where?”

I groaned, rolling my eyes upwards. “I don't have–”

She grabbed my arm, pulling me so we were eye level. “Pack. To. Where?”

I searched her eyes and she really didn't know. “To the boy’s house. Mr. Varkas told me this morning that’s where I’ll be living.”

“I didn't know about that arrangement.”

I dragged my arm away from her grip, looking down to see that it was red. That would bruise. Even now, she still gives me bruises. I walked past her and this time she didn't try to stop me. “Take that up with your husband.”

AXEL

I stood away from sight, leaning against the pillar with my arms folded as I watched the mother and daughter’s banter.

Barely three minutes watching them and I mapped out their entire relationship; they hated each other.

And now I was curious to know why. But when I saw Rosette look down at where her mother grabbed her, I could tell immediately. She had looked at the red mark with hate, and a well-concealed pain. Not physical pain—I doubted that hurt—but something deeper. And what’s deeper than emotional pain?

Rosette walked away and her mother stood still, staring at her hand.

“Ahh,” I muttered, pushing off from the pillar and following Rosette. I stayed five feet away from her, and she didn't even notice. She may put on a brave face, but she was… soft—but not that soft, though. I could tell by looking into her eyes that this beautiful woman was a survivor. She was tough, yet so… easily affected.

I found that interesting. Hell, I find everything about Rosette interesting. And don't even get me started on her scent. It brings me wild, feral. I would have to thank Father one time for this… gift.

Rosette climbed the stairs to her room and I stayed behind, watching her go. I found her very, very interesting. And I wanted to be around her always. This addiction won’t bode well for anyone. Not her. Not me.

“Stalking your new plaything?”

“Plaything…” I repeated, testing the words on my lips. It felt… wrong. “Wrong.”

Kade faced me, an eyebrow raised. “Wrong? She’s not your newest plaything? What’s she, then? A toy?”

I turned to face the bastard, my chest heaving with anger. But I wouldn't pick the bait. “And you? What’s she to you?”

He looked away from me, his jaw clenched. “She’s nothing.”

I let out a hollow laugh. “Right, brother. Right. You’ve always been a flirty liar, Kade. Always.” I turned, walking away. “But that’s good. You won't ever admit, and Kross… Well, that cold bastard is incapable of feeling anything. If it’s not business, you won't ever catch him there. This is good for me. Both of you will stay away, and I will have her all to myself.”

I laughed again, and this time it sounded light. “I’ve never liked sharing anyway.”

I felt Kade’s eyes burn into me until I turned and was out of sight. He had a fucked up past with women, so he tried to stay away, but somehow I feel this case will be different. I hoped my fucking instincts were wrong this time.

An hour later and Kade had left for home. I picked up my car keys and went to Rosette’s room, knocking softly. There was a rustle inside the room, and then a thud. Rosette groaned, shouting out, “Coming!”

A small smile curled my lips and I waited, standing still. Finally, she opened the door, breathing heavily, her bags behind her.

“Did you fall on your ass while you were trying to get into those pants?” I teased, leaning against the door frame as my eyes trailed over her.

She was wearing pants again. Pants and an old T-shirt, her hair once again in a messy bun.

“Shut up,” she muttered, her cheeks slightly red.

I wonder… what she’d look like if she smiled. Or what her laughter would sound like. Or how beautiful she would look if she let her hair down.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked, patting her hair and looking down at herself.

Ahh, this beautiful, sexy as sin woman was self-conscious.

“Why don't you let your hair down?” I asked softly.

She shrugged, looking anywhere but at me. “It gets in the way.”

“Hmm.” She finally looked at me, an eyebrow raised. And I couldn't help but say, “You’re beautiful, Rosette.”

“I know that.”

I smiled, leaning closer to her. It was like my body was no longer mine and I just wanted to get close and all in her personal space. “Do you?”

She nodded, indifferent like we were discussing the weather. “Yes.”

Just what has she gone through? What life has she lived that made her so cold and… broken?

“I want to know you, Rosette.”

A frown formed between her brows. “Why?”

I shrugged. “No reason. You interest me.”

She sighed like I was bothering her, rubbing her temple. “Look here, Axel. Nothing changed between us. What we did was just to take the edge off. Don't get attached. I won't be here for a long time.”

“And where would you be, sweetheart?”

“You should run away—far, far away to where we can't find you, because, my love, we are monsters. Predators. You’re a lamb surrounded by wolves.” “How literally is that?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper as my hands got woven into his hair, and I tugged hard. He groaned and I felt him thicken and pressed against my bottom. “How literally is what?” he asked, his voice shaking like he was struggling to hold himself back. “The wolves part,” I answered as I leaned down and kissed his neck before I bit it. He moaned, like a full, loud moan. Fuck, I love this. This power he was letting me have. “Rosette,” he moaned, his head thrown back and exposing his neck to me. “Rosette, do you know I never expose my neck like this to anyone? It’s a sign of weakness. If Kross sees this, he will lose his shit.”“Why, Kade?” I asked, still kissing and biting his neck. He moaned, gave me the reaction I wanted, and I never wanted to stop. “Tell me why.”“Again, my love, we’re monsters.”“Canid monste

I didn't know why I flinched. I didn't understand why I felt that little fear in my gut. I wasn't going to take what I read seriously. I kept telling myself over and over again, that this was real life and those things didn't exist. So I relaxed, and the men just looked at me with unreadable looks in their eyes. “Where’s Alex?” I asked, not because I cared, but I just had to say something to fill the tense silence. “Still not back,” Kross answered, his voice cool. As I looked at him, I remembered that moment we shared this morning. I didn't really know what it was, but it looked like Kross was fighting with himself. And as I look at him right now, I don't see his wall of ice anywhere. Something must have changed in him. Kade just stayed silent, watching me but after a while, he looked away. “I'll be in my room,” I said as I turned, going up the stairs. That was awkward. I felt like their little sister whom they had to check up on when she came back from somewhere. That was real

Oh. A personal driver. So he did remember, after all. What did that make my heart race and my stomach flutter? It was just something simple. It shouldn't make me feel this way. I nodded at Christopher, hoping my feelings weren't evident on my face. “Nice to meet you, Christopher. I'm heading to the library.” He walked to a black Mercedes, holding the back seat door. I entered the car, thanking him, and that gesture made me think of Axel. How was he? Still sick? Was that even a sickness? I pushed that out of my mind as soon as it arose. There was no use pondering on that when it would give me nothing but a headache. When we reached the library, before I could even open the car door, Christopher was already there. “I’ll be here waiting till you're done,” he informed me as I stepped out of the car. “Till I'm done? You'll be waiting in the car?”He nodded, his expression still blank. I shook my head. “There’s no need for that. I’ll be spending most of the day here. You could… like

“Shit,” I cursed as I rushed to Vera, not knowing what to do. “Are you hurt?” She waved her other hand, still holding her nose as she said, “Oh, no. I'm fine. It’s just a little–It’s not serious.”It was bleeding, blood dripping down her hand, and staining her gown so I was sure it was serious. “Come, let’s get that cleaned up,” I said gently as I held her by the shoulder. But just as we were about to leave, Father came out of his study, a cigar between his lips, pinning his wife with a bored look. Vera stiffened as soon as she saw him, lowering her head. “Eavesdropping, were we?” he said, his voice flat as he took a long drag from his cigar, blowing it in her direction. She stiffened even more, completely freezing. “N-no… I w-was just–” she stammered, unable to get a full sentence out. I looked at Father before I looked back at her, looking beyond her broken nose and seeing how she really was. She looked thin and pale, like she’s been barely eating or sleeping. I looked back at

  • The Varkas Brothers And Their Princess    Shield Her. Protect Her. But From What?

I stared at her longer than I should, feeling my heart kick against my chest, which was very abnormal for me. Had she always been this beautiful? She looked like she was glowing, and her red hair seemed more vibrant than usual. I had never seen her with her hair down so this was a new sight for me. Her hair was long, almost reaching her stomach. It framed her face, and I wanted to push it back so I could see her face more clearly. My hand raised as if it had a mind of its own, moving slowly. She watched me, not making any attempt to move, so I got bold and brushed her cheekbone, my heart once again kicking hard against its cage when I noticed she leaned into the touch. She barely moved, but I noticed just the slightest tilt of her head and that got my heart wild. That little reaction made me brave. I tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, lingering for way too long. She looked fragile with her hair down. More softer. Less fierce. And I wanted to shield her. Protect her. From wha

Kross was furious. He never gets furious. He was just a tall, muscled wall of no feeling. He barely raised his voice—he barely even spoke—he didn't get angry. He talked with his words, not his fists. The only time Kross had gotten to the point of throwing was when we were still kids, still young and foolish. Kross had gotten into a heated fight with Kade and they both came out of it with serious injuries. I dodged Kross’s blow, moving to the side and out of his way but he came back like a raging bull, throwing another punch which I dodged. I didn't want to get into a fight with him. I was in the wrong, but that doesn't mean I want to get beaten. “Kross, listen–”“How could you be so stupid?!” he shouted, coming at me with full rage. Kross getting into a fight with me and shouting at the same time? Was the world about to end? “I’m sorry, okay?” I tried to get to him, this time blocking his punches. “I felt like I was dying, Kross. The pain was worse than ever before. And the meds
