Nathan POV

The lights go off.

The afterimage of glowing monitors is burned into my retina as I grope in the dark. My hand bumps into something.

“Ow! All right. Who was it? I swear I'm going off your balls,” Adrian growls from next to me. A flashlight flares on, illuminating the scowl on his face. I smile apologetically.

“Jerk,” he growls, turning away.

Cole turns on another flashlight and hands it to me. “So Han made it,” he says, a relieved look on his face. In the past few hours we've been trapped here, I've learned that the man is claustrophobic. Now that there's a chance of us getting out of here, he allows himself a nervous but relieved smile.

“Should have turned it on by now,” Adrian says, rubbing his right eye. Tears pool at the corner, and it's redder than the other one.

“Maybe we should wait,” I say, checking my watch. Cole hands out the last of his chocolate bars — the man has a habit — and we squat to wa

Nathan POV “Sebastian,” I say. “We can talk about this. You don't have to hurt anyone.”He continues sipping his drink, sloshing it around his cup. The drink sparkles as the light dances in it. When he finally sets it down, he sighs. “We've tried talking, haven't we? You just won't bend. So now I'm going to break you. You go along with Sybil and come to me, or you struggle, and I hurt your friends. Your choice.”One time, when we were little, my mum got pets for Sebastian and me. It was a pair of parrots. I still remember mine. Its feathers were made of several colours that blended together — blue, red, orange, green. It looked like someone had taken a rainbow and pressed it into a bird. I named my parrot Harpy.Sebastian and I were elated. With both of our parents always busy, the pets filled a quiet gap. Every day after school, we would rush home, grab their cages, and sit in the backyard. I would feed Harpy seeds from my palm, laughing when hi

  • The Vow I Never Took   Just Gonna Hand It Over?

Nathan POV I have my hands behind my head as I step out of my hiding place. A bout of nausea hits me and I feel sick to my gut, but I force myself to keep walking forward, one slow step at a time. My shoes scrape against the dusty concrete floor, and every sound seems louder than it should be, like the building itself is holding its breath. They're standing in the open. All of them. I count maybe a dozen of Sebastian's men, their guns lowered but ready, their eyes sharp and unblinking. Not amateurs—trained, disciplined, alert. Lena, Han, Cole, and Grace sit on the floor, back to back, their wrists bound with zip ties that bite into their skin. Their faces are pale and drawn, though when Lena lifts her head and sees me, her lips part as if she wants to speak. The sight of her cuts straight through me. Shame, relief, anger, and love all hit at once, and it's as if my chest is being split open. The woman that spoke earlier holds a radio to her mouth, and whe

  • The Vow I Never Took   I Smell Trap

Nathan POV“What was that sound?" I ask as Adrian pulls me into an empty office.Adrian winces. “Sounded like a car crashing through the front door. Don't know who did it. … Sorry."I blink. “Sorry?"“The property damage."I almost burst out laughing. The absurdity of it. Of all the things to apologize for, in the middle of this chaos, it’s the building getting wrecked. His priorities are strange, though maybe that’s what’s keeping him calm."We should try generators. Whoever is turning the lights off and on is probably with us.”I shake my head. "It's been thirty minutes. I don't think they're there anymore."“Quiet, you two," my grandmother hisses. Adrian and I roll our eyes at the exact same time behind her.The office smells stale, like dust and old ink. A filing cabinet is tipped over in the corner, papers scattered across the floor like leaves. The hum of silence presses in, broken only by the fai

  • The Vow I Never Took   I Couldn't Agree More

Nathan POVMy heart falls with a lurch as the lights go off. My entire world is swallowed by darkness. And importantly, the elevator slows then stops. “Fuck," Adrian curses and it's a perfect summary of my mood. My grandmother glares at him and he mutters an apology. They both look at me. “We're trapped," Adrian says. Way to state the obvious. Who even is this guy?“We can wait for the elevators to come back on," I say, trying to sound confident. Adrian shakes his head. “The lights stayed on for longer than fifteen minutes the last time." Thirty two minutes exactly. I counted. Each extra second was like a hammer of fear against my ribcage. Is Lena okay? Did she get out? Is help coming? I have to push my anxiety aside to think through our problems. “We have to get out of here," Adrian says. “Right now. Those guys are already up there. If they don't find us, they'll know we're down here. They'll come for us. If we're

  • The Vow I Never Took   Maybe Two Or Three

Lena POVI flip the lever again, turning the lights back on. Experience tells me to shut my eyes as the world turns suddenly bright, and even then, it can't help with the pink afterimages at the back of my eyelids. I dart out of the generators room, running down the hallway until I find the broom closet I've made my hiding place. Han told me that the men Sebastian sent will quickly discover what I'm doing, and this will be the first place they check. So far, they haven't yet, but that only makes me more apprehensive. I hold my metal bat in front of me, sweat dripping down my face. I'm standing on a set of crates and I can stare out the broom closet into the hallway outside. Inside my head, the clock is ticking. In ten minutes, I'll have to go and turn off the generators again. Did Nathan and the others make it out? Not knowing is torture. Panic threatens to overwhelm me, but this is an old dance. I force myself to take deep breaths, l

  • The Vow I Never Took   More Bright Ideas?

Nathan POV“Shit shit shit shit shit shit,” my best friend growls as we pull away from the rails, slamming the door behind us. Thanks to the electricity being back on, the doors close with a sharp ping, the light on the console turning red. I punch in the master code, putting it on lockdown. It won't matter in fifteen minutes, though. When the lights go off again, the door will swing open, and we'll be out of cards to play. Adrian leans against the wall, his tie slack around his neck, panting like he's just run a marathon. His face is shiny with sweat, and he looks as exhausted as I feel. My grandmother is sitting on the floor, legs crossed in front of her, with her eyes closed as she tries to calm her breath and remain in control. I feel a stab of envy at her control, then I look at her hand and see the tremor running through it. She's just as terrified as the rest of us. Anger burns inside of me. For a moment, if consumes the tiredness, saps
