Roman POV

I woke up before the sun.

The cabin was quiet. The fire had burned down to embers. The air was cold.

I lay in bed for a moment. Staring at the ceiling.

Something was wrong.

I felt it in my bones. A vibration. A hum.

Faint. Distant, but still there.

I sat up.

I dressed quickly. I grabbed my jacket and walked outside.

---

The mountain was quiet.

Too quiet.

The birds weren't humming. The wind wasn't blowing. The trees were still.

I looked toward Isabella's property.

A mile away.

I could

  • The Warden's Second Chance    Chapter 35 - My Father's Journal

Isabella POVI woke up early. The sun was barely rising. The sky was gray. The mountain was quiet.I lay in bed for a moment. Staring at the ceiling.I couldn't understand the changes that Roman wa talking about. How do we save everyone, even if I can't save all. Something was pulling at me.A feeling. A whisper. A memory, maybe or not.But my mind kept going to my father's box.I sat up quickly, nearly falling off the bed.I walked to the closet and pulled out the small wooden box.It was old and worn. The corners were chipped. The lid was scratched.I had taken it from the mansion when I left. I hadn't opened it since.I didn't know why I took it. I didn't know what was inside. Maybe I thought I would need it. Maybe I thought it would help.Maybe I was just holding onto something. But something told me to keep it.Something told me it was important.---I walked back to the bed and sat down. Then placed the box on my lap.I ran my fingers over the lid.My father's initials were car

  • The Warden's Second Chance    Chapter 34 -  Sophia's Fear

Ethan POVI came home late. The house was dark. The lights were off. The television was silent.I closed the door behind me.The sound echoed through the small space.I walked to the kitchen. I poured myself a glass of water. My hands were still shaking. The mountain scene. Isabella holding the rifle with her cold face. I couldn't get it out of my head. The way she looked at me. The way she held the gun. The way she pulled the trigger. She had changed. She had really changed.I drank the cold water and set the glass down.I walked to the bedroom and met the door was closed. That's new. I pushed it open.---Sophia was sitting on the bed.Her knees were pulled to her chest. Her arms were wrapped around them. She was staring at the wall. Her face was pale. Her eyes were red.She looked... afraid or not. I couldn't pinpoint her emotion. "Sophia?"She didn't respond.I stood there. "Sophia. What's wrong?"She blinked then looked at me. Her eyes widened. Surprised. "Ethan."Her voice

The trees were still.I looked toward Isabella's property.A mile away.I could see the smoke from her chimney. Thin. Gray. Rising into the cold air.She was awake.---I slowly walked toward her home. The path was familiar. I had walked it a hundred times. But today, it felt different.Heavier. Darker. Wrong.I reached her house and stopped. The door was closed. The windows were dark.I knocked. Three times. I waited for a few minutes. I was about knocking again when the door opened.Isabella stood there. She looked... disoriented. Her hair was messy. Her eyes were red.

  • The Warden's Second Chance    Chapter 32 - You Don't Know Me Anymore

Isabella POVI watched him run.His arms were flailing. His legs were pumping. His expensive shoes were slipping on the rocks. He looked ridiculous. His brown suit was torn. His hair was messy. His shoes were covered in dirt.He stumbled down the mountain like a scared animal. He grabbed at trees. He slipped on rocks. He looked pathetic. The man I had loved for four years. The man I had given everything for.He looked ridiculous.I stood there. The rifle still in my hands. The echo of the gunshot still ringing in my ears.My hands were steady. My heart was calm.I had not fired. I had not hurt him, but I had scared of him.Killing him would have been easy.It would have been satisfying. A justice well served. But it would not have been enough.---Death was too quick. Too merciful and kind.Ethan needed to live.He needed to suffer. He needed to watch everything he had taken from me crumble to dust.He needed to feel the pain I had felt.He needed to understand what he had done.Good.

  • The Warden's Second Chance    Chapter 31 - Strange Ex-wife

Ethan POVI woke up on time. Before Rebecca. Before Sophia. Before our son, Max started crying. The room was dark. The air was cold. The bed was lumpy. But I didn’t care. I didn't need them breathing down my neck. They didn't need to know where I was going. Or what was about to happen. They would hinder this plan.Rebecca would complain. Sophia would question. They would fill my head with doubt and fear.No.This was my plan. My moment. My chance.---I took my bath. The water was cold. The bathroom was small. The mirror was cracked, but i didn't care.I washed my hair and shaved my face very, exactly how Isabella liked it. Then, I slowly walked to my box and pulled out the suit. The brown suit. The exact one Isabella loved.I held it up and looked at it. It was wrinkled. A little faded. But it was still beautiful.I put it on and stood in front of the mirror.---Yes.That's the prince that Isabella would fall for.I laughed at my reflection. I looked handsome. My hair was perfect

  • The Warden's Second Chance    Chapter 30 -  His Plan

Ethan POVI stormed toward the house. My fists were clenched. My jaw was tight. My blood was boiling. How dare she?How dare she move on?How dare she find someone else?I was going to confront her. I was going to demand answers. I was going to make her understand. But I stopped.Halfway up the trail. My hand was raised. My mouth was open.I stopped.---I remembered that I needed to appear remorseful.I needed to appear broken. Desperate. Sorry. If I stormed in there with anger in my eyes and fire in my voice, she would reject me. She would slam the door in my face. She would call that man, the tall one with the gray eyes and have him throw me out.No.Something my father had told me. Years ago. Before he died."You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, son."I had laughed at him. I had called him old-fashioned. I had told him I didn't need to catch flies. I was Ethan Carter. I could have anything I wanted. But he was right.I needed to be smart, patient.I lowered my hand,
