Chapter 3

Author: Katerina
The next morning, I heard the lock turn.

Adrian walked in just as I finished sealing the last cardboard box.

Mia followed behind him.

They both paused when they saw the four boxes lined up neatly in the living room.

Adrian had arrived looking cold, probably because I never called him last night. But the moment he saw the boxes, his expression visibly eased.

He thought I was eager to move into the Tribeca penthouse.

“All right. Enough.”

Adrian walked over and glanced down at the boxes.

“Yesterday is over.”

“Stop fighting with me over Mia. I’ll add your fingerprint today, and the wedding is still happening.”

Mia stood behind him and spoke softly.

“Claire, don’t blame Adrian for yesterday. Everyone was only joking.”

She paused.

“That apartment is obviously your home. I was just helping get a few things ready.”

As she spoke, her hand settled naturally on Adrian’s arm.

Months ago, I would have stared at that hand and asked why she was touching my fiancé.

Now I only smiled.

“It’s fine.”

Adrian studied me for a few seconds, clearly pleased with my answer.

He reached out to touch my hair.

I tilted my head away.

Adrian didn’t seem to care.

“That’s better.”

He checked the time.

“I’m taking Mia back to the office to pick up a file. We’re having a housewarming at the new place tonight. Luca and the others will be there.”

“Come over when you’re done moving.”

Then he added,

“Don’t be late.”

“Okay.”

I answered immediately.

The corner of Adrian’s mouth lifted.

He probably really believed that what I had said last night about calling off the wedding was nothing more than the last bit of a tantrum I hadn’t quite gotten over.

A few minutes later, they left.

The moment the door closed, the smile faded from my face.

I took out my phone and called the moving company I had booked in advance.

“Hi. You can come up now.”

“Four boxes. They’re all going to San Francisco.”

The movers arrived half an hour later.

I wasn’t taking much with me.

My laptop, hard drives, design sketches, and the work materials I had accumulated over the years.

The clothes and jewelry Adrian had given me, along with everything that belonged to the two of us, stayed behind.

Once the boxes were gone, I returned to the desk.

Two printed emails were still lying there.

One was from our wedding planner.

The other was from the venue we had booked.

After I came home last night, I had officially canceled the wedding.

A confirmation soon appeared on my phone.

Your cancellation has been processed.

I looked at it for a few seconds, then closed the page.

Five years together, and in the end, all I really had to deal with were a few boxes and a handful of cancellation forms.

By that afternoon, the apartment was empty.

I shut off the power, checked each room one last time, and left with a single black suitcase.

Adrian still thought I was busy moving my things into our new home.

Maybe tonight he would sit in that penthouse with Luca and the others, waiting for me to show up.

I locked the door to the apartment where we had lived for five years and left the keys with building management.

Then I called a car.

The driver looked at me through the rearview mirror.

“Where to?”

I glanced at the boarding pass on my phone.

“JFK.”

The car merged into Manhattan traffic.

The building behind me grew smaller and smaller.

And even now, Adrian probably still believed I had finally learned to behave.

……

The second bottle of champagne had already been opened in the Tribeca penthouse.

Luca leaned back on the sofa, laughing so hard that he nearly spilled his drink.

“Adrian, I’ll give you this. Six months ago, Claire would’ve torn that door off its hinges if she found out Mia had access before she did.”

One of the others lifted his glass. “And tonight, she didn’t even make a scene.”

“Looks like she finally learned,” another man said with a laugh.

Adrian stood beside the bar, slowly turning the whiskey in his glass. His expression remained calm, but the satisfaction behind it was impossible to miss.

“She used to make everything bigger than it needed to be.”

Luca grinned. “So the fingerprint thing worked?”

Adrian lifted his chin slightly, looking completely unsurprised.

“She’s finally learning what it means to stand beside me. “If she’s finally learned how to be a proper Donna, then the wedding will go ahead as planned.”

Luca laughed and raised his glass.

“I told you she’d come around. Claire’s been obsessed with marrying you for years. She was never really going to walk away.”

The others laughed with him.

Even Mia smiled.

No one in the room seemed to doubt it.

Right then, his phone vibrated against the bar.

Luca laughed again. “Speak of the devil.”

Adrian glanced down with the faintest smile, already expecting another message from me asking whether he was still angry, or what time I should come over.

But the moment he read it, the glass slipped from his hand and shattered.

Adrian, we’re done.

You wanted me to stop caring who you were with. Now I don’t.

The wedding is canceled. You can be with whoever you want now.

The weather in San Francisco was beautiful on our wedding day.The ceremony was held on the top-floor terrace of a hotel overlooking the bay. White flowers lined the aisle, and the breeze coming off the water lifted the edge of my veil.My mother walked with me to the entrance.Julian was already waiting at the other end. From the moment I appeared, he never looked away. When I reached him, he took my hand. His palm was warm.Julian kept his vows simple.“Claire, I will never make you guess where you stand with me.”“If you feel uncertain, ask me. If I hurt you, tell me.”His fingers tightened gently around mine.“You will never have to prove that you deserve to be loved by seeing how much you can endure.”For a moment, the terrace went quiet. My eyes burned.Adrian had spent years convincing himself there were too many things about me that needed to change.Ask less.Care less.Need less.Every time I told him something hurt, he pushed the boundary a little further until I finally lea

Another six months passed.A week before the wedding, I was at the designer’s studio for my final dress fitting. The designer was adjusting the last layer of my veil when my phone rang.Luca.I stared at the name for a few seconds before answering.“Claire.”He sounded tense.“Adrian knows you’re getting married.”I looked at myself in the mirror.“Oh.”Luca clearly hadn’t expected that to be my only reaction.“Someone shared the news about you and Julian last night. Adrian saw it and completely lost it.”So that was how he found out.Julian’s family had announced the wedding a few days earlier. It had quickly been picked up by a San Francisco society column and a few design-industry accounts.Luca continued.“He went back to the Tribeca penthouse and destroyed half the living room. Almost everything Mia helped choose is gone.”“He’s sitting by the front door now.”Luca paused.“Right in front of that fingerprint lock.”I said nothing.“Claire, he keeps saying that if he’d just added y

Three months later, rain poured over San Francisco. The design summit had just ended, and I was leaving the hotel with several colleagues when a man suddenly came through the rain toward me.Security stopped him before he reached the steps.I stopped walking. It was Adrian. His black coat was soaked through, his dark hair plastered across his forehead. He looked nothing like the Moretti Don I remembered, the man who was always composed and always in control.“Claire.”His voice was rough.I didn’t move.Adrian stared at me for a long moment. Then he pulled free of the security guard and crossed the remaining distance. The next second, he dropped to his knees.Everyone around us went quiet.“I was wrong.”Rain ran down his face.“Mia doesn’t work for Moretti anymore. Whatever she did, the lawyers are handling it.”“I changed the locks at the Tribeca penthouse too.”His eyes were already red when he looked up at me.“Claire, come home with me.”“You can look through my phone whenever you

A few weeks later, the head of finance at Moretti Properties hurried into Adrian’s office.“There’s a problem with one of the operating accounts.”Adrian looked up.“How much?”“About one point eight million.”The money had been set aside for the next round of payments to contractors and suppliers on one of their hotel projects.“Where did it go?”The man’s expression tightened.“Mia initiated the transfers last night using her administrative access. By the time the bank flagged them, the money had already been split across several outside accounts.”Adrian picked up his phone and called her.Straight to voicemail. He sent people to her apartment. It had already been cleared out.Clothes, documents, luggage. Everything was gone.Adrian stared at the bank records on his desk, his expression turning cold.He had always known Mia enjoyed the lifestyle that came with working closely with the Moretti family. He had never expected her to steal from the company. The bank froze the remaining t

San Francisco, eight in the morning.Morning light poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the conference room as I clicked to the final page of my presentation.“That’s my overall revision for the hotel’s public spaces.”“Thank you.”The room stayed quiet for two seconds before applause followed. The man at the head of the table closed the file in front of him.Julian Hayes.Founder and design director of the international architecture firm, and the man who had personally recruited me from New York.“Very good.”His attention returned to the screen.“Especially the lobby circulation. You improved the visual impact without sacrificing how people actually move through the space.”I set down the remote.“Thank you.”Julian handed the file to the project manager beside him.“We’ll move forward with Claire’s version.”No one questioned me because I was new.No one took my work, polished it under someone else’s name, or expected me to spend my nights fixing problems I would never rec

Adrian refused to believe it.I had loved him for five years. If he came home an hour late, I used to ask where he had been. Sometimes, when he deliberately ignored her messages, she would stay awake until the middle of the night waiting for him.How could someone like that disappear so completely? He immediately had his men find out where I had gone.It took them nearly an hour to confirm that I had left New York from JFK that afternoon.Less than an hour later, his men confirmed that I had boarded a flight to San Francisco that afternoon.
