Chapter 2

Author: Katerina
While clearing out the bedroom, I pulled an old charging cable from behind the nightstand.

Six months ago, Adrian’s phone had been charging in that exact spot.

That was the first time Mia had ever become the reason for a real fight between us.

It was after one in the morning. Adrian had gone to shower when his phone screen lit up.

Mia.

Good night, Adrian. Try to get some sleep.

A few minutes later, he came out of the bathroom, glanced at the message, and replied as naturally as if there were nothing strange about it.

Good night, Mia. You too.

I looked at him.

“Do you two always text like this at night?”

“Saying good night to each other at one in the morning.”

Adrian lifted his eyes.

“Mia is my assistant. We were working late tonight.”

“Does she still need to remind you to sleep after the work is over?”

The patience in his expression faded.

“Claire, it’s one message.”

“If a man texted me like that at one in the morning, would you be fine with it?”

That night, we had our first serious fight over Mia.

I asked him to keep a professional boundary with her.

Adrian’s only answer was, “What you should be asking yourself is why one good-night text makes you this angry.”

The next afternoon, he took Mia to a private furniture showroom in SoHo.

Together, they chose the sofa and dining table for the apartment we were supposed to move into after the wedding.

When he came home, I asked why he had taken her.

Adrian removed his coat.

“She’s helping with the new place.”

“I told you yesterday that I’m uncomfortable with how close you two are.”

“So because you’re uncomfortable, I have to do whatever you want?”

We fought again.

After that, it was always some version of the same thing.

One day, I found Mia sitting in the passenger seat of Adrian’s car.

I stood beside the car and asked him why she was there.

Adrian looked at me for a few seconds, then walked around the car and opened the passenger door for her.

“Get in.”

Mia hesitated.

“Adrian, I can sit in the back.”

“No.”

He leaned in and fastened her seat belt himself, then looked at me over the open door.

As if he were waiting to see what I would do.

I lost my temper that day.

Adrian stayed perfectly calm.

“Claire, who sits beside me doesn’t mean anything.”

“But you know I care.”

“Then learn not to.”

Later, I came down with a fever of almost 103.

Adrian had promised to stay home with me that night, but somehow we ended up arguing about Mia again.

In the end, he called her right in front of me.

“Get ready. We’re going to Hudson Valley.”

The Morettis owned a private estate there.

I pushed myself upright in bed.

“Adrian, I have a fever.”

“The medicine is in the cabinet.”

“You really have to take her tonight?”

He was already putting on his coat.

“I could have stayed. You’re the one who turned this into another fight.”

Then he closed the door behind him.

Rain poured over New York that night.

My fever kept climbing until I finally had to call a car and go to the ER alone.

While a nurse set up my IV, I took out my phone and typed:

I feel awful.

Before I could send it, I saw Mia’s latest post.

The terrace at the Hudson Valley estate was lit by the fire. Two glasses sat on the table.

Quiet nights are the best.

At the edge of the photo was Adrian’s watch, the one I knew on sight.

I stared at it for a while.

Then I deleted the message I had written.

After that night, I stopped asking.

If Adrian came home late, I didn’t ask where he had been.

If Mia sat in his car, I didn’t argue.

If he canceled our plans at the last minute, I answered with one word.

Okay.

Sometimes Mia called after midnight and Adrian stepped out to take it right in front of me.

I simply rolled over and went back to sleep.

Adrian was pleased.

I even heard him tell Luca and the others once, “She’s been much better lately. She used to question everything. Now she finally understands that some things aren’t worth making a problem over.”

Everyone thought I had become easier to love.

I looked down at the charging cable in my hand, wound it up, and dropped it into the garbage bag.

Once, I would have stared at Adrian’s phone waiting for an explanation.

Now, he could leave it unlocked in front of me and I probably wouldn’t bother looking.

This was what he had wanted.

Adrian thought the silence meant I had finally learned.

The weather in San Francisco was beautiful on our wedding day.The ceremony was held on the top-floor terrace of a hotel overlooking the bay. White flowers lined the aisle, and the breeze coming off the water lifted the edge of my veil.My mother walked with me to the entrance.Julian was already waiting at the other end. From the moment I appeared, he never looked away. When I reached him, he took my hand. His palm was warm.Julian kept his vows simple.“Claire, I will never make you guess where you stand with me.”“If you feel uncertain, ask me. If I hurt you, tell me.”His fingers tightened gently around mine.“You will never have to prove that you deserve to be loved by seeing how much you can endure.”For a moment, the terrace went quiet. My eyes burned.Adrian had spent years convincing himself there were too many things about me that needed to change.Ask less.Care less.Need less.Every time I told him something hurt, he pushed the boundary a little further until I finally lea

Another six months passed.A week before the wedding, I was at the designer’s studio for my final dress fitting. The designer was adjusting the last layer of my veil when my phone rang.Luca.I stared at the name for a few seconds before answering.“Claire.”He sounded tense.“Adrian knows you’re getting married.”I looked at myself in the mirror.“Oh.”Luca clearly hadn’t expected that to be my only reaction.“Someone shared the news about you and Julian last night. Adrian saw it and completely lost it.”So that was how he found out.Julian’s family had announced the wedding a few days earlier. It had quickly been picked up by a San Francisco society column and a few design-industry accounts.Luca continued.“He went back to the Tribeca penthouse and destroyed half the living room. Almost everything Mia helped choose is gone.”“He’s sitting by the front door now.”Luca paused.“Right in front of that fingerprint lock.”I said nothing.“Claire, he keeps saying that if he’d just added y

Three months later, rain poured over San Francisco. The design summit had just ended, and I was leaving the hotel with several colleagues when a man suddenly came through the rain toward me.Security stopped him before he reached the steps.I stopped walking. It was Adrian. His black coat was soaked through, his dark hair plastered across his forehead. He looked nothing like the Moretti Don I remembered, the man who was always composed and always in control.“Claire.”His voice was rough.I didn’t move.Adrian stared at me for a long moment. Then he pulled free of the security guard and crossed the remaining distance. The next second, he dropped to his knees.Everyone around us went quiet.“I was wrong.”Rain ran down his face.“Mia doesn’t work for Moretti anymore. Whatever she did, the lawyers are handling it.”“I changed the locks at the Tribeca penthouse too.”His eyes were already red when he looked up at me.“Claire, come home with me.”“You can look through my phone whenever you

A few weeks later, the head of finance at Moretti Properties hurried into Adrian’s office.“There’s a problem with one of the operating accounts.”Adrian looked up.“How much?”“About one point eight million.”The money had been set aside for the next round of payments to contractors and suppliers on one of their hotel projects.“Where did it go?”The man’s expression tightened.“Mia initiated the transfers last night using her administrative access. By the time the bank flagged them, the money had already been split across several outside accounts.”Adrian picked up his phone and called her.Straight to voicemail. He sent people to her apartment. It had already been cleared out.Clothes, documents, luggage. Everything was gone.Adrian stared at the bank records on his desk, his expression turning cold.He had always known Mia enjoyed the lifestyle that came with working closely with the Moretti family. He had never expected her to steal from the company. The bank froze the remaining t

San Francisco, eight in the morning.Morning light poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the conference room as I clicked to the final page of my presentation.“That’s my overall revision for the hotel’s public spaces.”“Thank you.”The room stayed quiet for two seconds before applause followed. The man at the head of the table closed the file in front of him.Julian Hayes.Founder and design director of the international architecture firm, and the man who had personally recruited me from New York.“Very good.”His attention returned to the screen.“Especially the lobby circulation. You improved the visual impact without sacrificing how people actually move through the space.”I set down the remote.“Thank you.”Julian handed the file to the project manager beside him.“We’ll move forward with Claire’s version.”No one questioned me because I was new.No one took my work, polished it under someone else’s name, or expected me to spend my nights fixing problems I would never rec

Adrian refused to believe it.I had loved him for five years. If he came home an hour late, I used to ask where he had been. Sometimes, when he deliberately ignored her messages, she would stay awake until the middle of the night waiting for him.How could someone like that disappear so completely? He immediately had his men find out where I had gone.It took them nearly an hour to confirm that I had left New York from JFK that afternoon.Less than an hour later, his men confirmed that I had boarded a flight to San Francisco that afternoon. The four boxes from the apartment had been shipped there too.The four boxes had been shipped there too.I hadn’t left for a few days to cool off.I had moved away.He drove straight to the architecture and design firm where I used to work.It was almost ten at night, and only a few people were still in the office. One of the partners knew Adrian and looked surprised to see him.“Where’s Claire?”The man studied him for a moment.“She left.”“I know
