I laid in the grass waiting for him to turn, but he didn’t. He just stood there, staring me down with the same gleeful arrogance that always existed within him. I still felt odd. It wasn’t the booze, but I didn’t know what it was. I had never felt so alive. It felt like fire was pumping through my veins. I could feel the lust inside of me. It wasn’t like the lust that I had felt for Pip. It was something else, something more raw. The blood lust was the only answer. I had no idea how it was even possible, but it was there, as plain as day.

The smell of him seemed to pull me towards him like a magnetism impossible to ignore. He never moved. He was waiting for me, almost taunting me. I flew at him, landing my fist squarely in his jaw. His face moved from the impact, but it moved back towards me just as quickly. I went to throw another

  • The Whispers in the Woods   Chapter 21

I should have woken, startled by his touch, but I wasn’t. As his arm came around me, it felt like a serene peace had settled over the whole room. For the first time since the party, I felt more myself. I basked in it for a moment before trying to turn towards him, but he held me firmly in place. I knew he would know that I thought I knew who he was. What I couldn’t decide was whether his actions meant I was right or not. I had so much I wanted to say, questions I needed to ask, but I had no idea where to start. They were all surging around my brain.“Shush, some of us are trying to sleep.” As usual, he never spoke an actual word. I wondered if his voice was the same as I heard it in my head. He didn’t sound like any of the pack that I had heard speak.“No, I don’t. Now, shush.” How he expected me to sleep with so much going on was anyone’s guess. There was so much to discuss and it wasn’t like we got a lot of time to talk normally.“Yes, it was vampire powers th

  • The Whispers in the Woods   Chapter 20

I woke, slightly startled and confused. It took a minute to realise that I was in fact in my own bed and not back out in the garden sinking my teeth into Brodie. The dreams had been so vivid, and I could still taste his blood on my tongue. I lifted my hand to my head, the headache pounding at its core seemed to make the room spin before me. If it had been just the headache, I would have considered it a normal hangover like every teen gets at some point. Except it felt like my whole body was affected. My muscles ached, and I felt so weak still, just like I had the night before. When I had been in front of Brodie, my blood had felt like fire coursing through my veins, but it had turned to ice overnight. I slumped back down on my pillow and closed my eyes, trying to guard against the worst of the sensations filling me. I wanted to remove the pain so badly, but I knew no amount of painkillers would do the job.My head was still such a mess. I had no idea what was going on

As we pulled up to the party, I was completely taken aback. I couldn’t understand how the scruffy nobody at the back of the class, who slept more than studied, could live in such a beautiful house. I knew instantly that his parents must have been loaded. The sprawling detached house was at least four times as big as my parent’s place. It had one of those fountains in the drive that you drive around, like in the movies. It was built in the classical style and was a stark white, which seemed to reflect the light from the full moon overhead. There were columns and arched windows. It was stunning.Unfortunately, that was where the majesty ended. As we walked through the door hand in hand, there seemed to be bodies everywhere we looked. People were lying across the grand staircase and sat in huddles on the black-and-white tiled floor. There were beer bottles and general rubbish strewn all over the place, just abandoned as though it was nothing. I had already learnt not to t

As soon as we got into my room, I closed the door firmly. The tension downstairs was too thick. I was almost worried it would follow us up the stairs. I was just as worried as my parents that Cassie had overheard the vampire talk. If she had, she was showing no signs at all. She didn’t seem remotely concerned about her surroundings. I watched as she inspected my room, looking through the bookcases and flicking through my CDs.“Some of those books are like mega old.” I hadn’t really considered that the things I owned could be a red flag, but they were.“I know. I have quite a few first editions. It’s a hobby of mine.” I resisted the urge to tell her that most of them I had acquired when the authors had written them. She selected a CD and put it on. Upbeat dance music filled the air. It wasn’t my usual go to music. I preferred eighties rock. I had spent so many nights wishing I could be there live when the likes of Black Sabbath were performing.“You really need t

I just stood there staring at him, my mother looking between us, completely in the dark. Pip had talked about how my father would kill him. I couldn’t let that happen. I had to make him understand. Despite knowing I needed to convince him to accept us, I just couldn’t find the words. There were none, not to make him go against everything he believed. All Pip talked about was protecting me, and it was my turn to try to protect him. If my dad wouldn’t understand, it could mean an all-out war between us and the pack, and that was the last thing anyone needed. I had to find a way to make him understand. To make him see that I loved Pip.“Dad, you have to understand...” I stopped short. I panicked.“Understand what? That you are willing to put me and your mum in danger, for something so pointless.” His assessment stung. How was I supposed to convince him when I didn’t even know what Pip really looked like? My dad would think it was laughable. He would continue to bel

The next morning, I woke up really late. I had tossed and turned all night long. I had hoped that Pip would come back, but he never did. Instead, I was left burning with desire for him all night. When I was with him, the heat he produced seemed to infect me and cause my fire to burn hotter for him as a result.I had tried everything to cool off, including taking a cold shower in the middle of the night. Nothing worked. The only thing that would get rid of the fire deep inside me was adding more fire and letting it burn itself out. Unfortunately, he was keeping the fire I needed from me. I had cursed him most of the night. I knew he could hear every word of it and I was glad. I hope he was kept awake all night long too. When I had finally emerged from my pit, it was gone midday and the house was empty. I didn’t even have the energy to get dressed and sulked down the stairs, still clad in my PJs. Heading straight to the fridge and pulling out everything I needed to make

It was a relief that I could head home and avoid any further tension between the two of us. I was on edge the whole drive home, struggling to drive because my legs continued to shake. It felt like every nerve ending in my entire body was standing to attention. I had been so glad when no one had tried to talk to me as I left the bathroom and made my way to the car. I wasn’t convinced I would have been able to hold myself up long enough to have a conversation. The drive had been much slower than usual, thanks in part to my trembling legs. I threw myself down on my bed just to give myself some time to recover from the experience in class. I grabbed my phone out of my bag just as it dinged at me.Cassie: Party at Gareth’s place tomorrow night, you coming?Esme: Who is Gareth?Cassie: He’s in the lectures with us. Sits at the back with his legs up on the seat in front all the time.I knew who she meant, but I hadn’t had any contact with him. I was anxio

Finally, it was the last day of the school week. As I walked through the corridor, I turned way more heads than I had expected to. The different cliques whispering among themselves, likely contemplating what had led to my change. I couldn’t help but imagine how many of them were still whispering nasty remarks about me. The truth was that no matter what I did to make myself more like them, it would never be enough to stop the comments.I headed into that dreadful room and was full of butterflies. I couldn’t help but think that Pip would dislike my new look. Something inside me forced me to need to please him. Even though I had no idea how to do that. I didn’t know nearly enough about him to know where to start. All my doubts were blown away the second I walked into the room. His heat and fire hit me like I was standing behind a jet engine. I took a step back without meaning to just from the force of it. He didn’t say a word, and I knew it was because he was with the pac
