SERENA POV

I laid it all out for him.

I had been planning this for years. Not just the affair. Not just the company. Not just the house. Everything. From the moment I met Eleanor. From the moment I learned who Nadia was. From the moment I decided she would pay for what she did to my father.

But Julian did not need to know that.

He did not need to know that Eleanor was involved. He did not need to know about my father. He did not need to know anything except what I told him.

"The plan is simple," I said.

He sat across from me at the small table in my apartment. He was holding a glass of whiskey. He had not touched it. He was just holding it. Staring at it. Staring at nothing.

"She has a routine," I said. "She goes to the coffee shop every morning. She goes to her lawyer's office every Tuesday. She goes to the pharmacy every Thursday."

He did not speak.

"We watch her. We learn her schedule. We find the perfect moment."

He did not speak.

"It will look like an accident. A car accident. A mugging gone wrong. Something random. Something tragic. Something no one would question."

He did not speak.

"You will be at home. You will have an alibi. You will grieve publicly. You will play the part of the devastated husband."

He did not speak.

"And then you will inherit everything."

He looked up. He looked at me. His eyes were hollow. His eyes were empty. His eyes were full of something I could not read.

"And what about you?" he asked.

I smiled. A slow, cold smile.

"I will be there for you," I said. "Through all of it."

"And after?"

"And after, we will be together. You and me. The way it was always meant to be."

He did not speak.

He did not believe me.

I could see it in his eyes. He did not believe a word I said. But he wanted to. He wanted to believe that there was a way out. He wanted to believe that there was a future. He wanted to believe that he could still win.

That was his weakness.

That was always his weakness.

He wanted to believe.

"Think about it," I said. "Everything you ever wanted. Everything you lost. Everything she took from you. You can have it all back."

He looked at me.

"She took nothing from me," he said. "I gave it to you."

I did not respond.

I just smiled.

NADIA POV

I woke up in the middle of the night.

I did not know why. I did not know what had woken me. I just lay there in the dark. Staring at the ceiling. Listening to the silence.

Something was wrong.

I could feel it. In my chest. In my stomach. In my bones. Something was wrong.

I pressed my hand against my stomach. The baby. The tiny life inside me. The only thing that mattered.

"We are okay," I whispered. "We are okay."

But I did not believe it.

I got out of bed. I walked to the window. I looked out at the city. The city was dark. The city was quiet. The city was asleep.

I thought about Julian. I thought about the last time I saw him. The way he looked at me. The way he begged. The way he said he did not care.

He cared now.

But that was not what was bothering me.

I thought about Serena. I thought about the last time I saw her. The way she smiled at me. The way she called herself a friend. The way she looked at Julian across the room.

Something was wrong with her.

Something had always been wrong with her.

I just had not seen it.

Until now.

---

I called Rachel the next morning.

"I need you to do something for me," I said.

"Anything."

"I need you to look into Serena Cole. Everything. Her past. Her family. Her connections. Everything."

"Why?"

"I do not know. I just have a feeling."

"What kind of feeling?"

"The kind that tells me she is not finished. The kind that tells me she is planning something. The kind that tells me she is not just a mistress."

Rachel was silent for a moment.

"I will look into it," she said.

"And Rachel."

"Yes?"

"Do not tell anyone. Not David. Not Maria. No one."

"You think someone in your network is feeding them information?"

"I do not know what I think. I just know that something is wrong. And I need to find out what it is before it is too late."

---

JULIAN POV

I did not agree.

I did not say no.

I just sat there. Staring at the glass of whiskey I had not touched. Staring at the table. Staring at nothing.

Serena was still talking. She was still explaining. She was still planning. She was still telling me what to do. She was still treating me like a pawn.

I did not hear any of it.

I just thought about Nadia.

I thought about the way she looked at me when she walked out the door. The way she said she was done. The way she said I was too late.

I thought about the baby. The baby she lost. The baby I did not mourn. The baby I replaced.

I thought about the life I had destroyed.

I thought about the life I could still have.

I thought about everything.

And then I thought about nothing.

"Julian," Serena said. "Are you listening to me?"

I looked up. I looked at her. Her eyes were sharp. Her eyes were cold. Her eyes were full of something I had not seen before.

Impatience.

"I am listening," I said.

"Then what do you think?"

I did not answer.

"Julian."

"I think I need to think."

"There is no time to think."

"There is always time to think."

She looked at me. For a long moment. Her eyes were searching. Her eyes were calculating. Her eyes were full of something I could not read.

"You are not going to do it," she said.

I did not answer.

"You are still in love with her."

I did not answer.

"After everything she did to you. After everything she took from you. You are still in love with her."

I looked at her.

"I am not in love with her," I said. "I never was."

She laughed. A short, cold laugh. A laugh that held no humor. A laugh that held only contempt.

"Then what is it?"

I did not answer.

"Is it guilt? Is it regret? Is it the baby?"

I did not answer.

"Julian."

I stood up. I walked to the door. I stopped. I turned around. I looked at her. I looked at the woman who had ruined my life. I looked at the woman who was trying to ruin it again.

"I will think about it," I said.

I opened the door.

I walked out.

I did not look back.

---

SERENA POV

He left.

He walked out the door. He walked down the hallway. He walked out of my life.

I stood there.

Alone.

I did not know if he would come back. I did not know if he would agree. I did not know anything.

But I knew one thing.

He was weak.

He was broken.

He was mine.

He just did not know it yet.

I picked up my phone. I called the one person I knew I could trust. The one person who had been helping me from the beginning. The one person who wanted Nadia dead as much as I did.

"Eleanor," I said. "We have a problem."

NADIA POV I found the key three days later. It was in his coat pocket again. The same coat. The same pocket. He had forgotten about it. He had forgotten he had left it there. He had forgotten that I had already found one secret in that coat. I waited until he was asleep. I waited until I was sure he would not wake up. Then I crept out of bed and walked to the study. My hands were shaking. I did not know what I was going to find. I did not know what was waiting for me on the other side of that locked drawer. I only knew that I had to know. I had to see. I had to understand. I unlocked the door. I walked inside. I knelt down beside the desk and slid the key into the lock. It turned easily. Too easily. Like it had been waiting for me. Like it wanted to be opened. I pulled the drawer open. Inside was a folder. Thick. Black. Unmarked. I lifted it out and set it on the desk. I sat down in his chair. I opened the folder. The first page was a legal document. I did not understand it at first.
