Patricia woke before Alex.

She lay quietly for a few moments, staring at the ceiling.

The previous night's discovery had followed her into sleep.

Your father didn't disappear when you were a child.

He disappeared after someone discovered you existed.

She had read the message so many times that she no longer knew whether she was trying to understand it or convince herself that it was real.

She turned toward Alex.

He was asleep.

For once, his face looked peaceful.

Patricia almost reached for him.

  • The Wife He Betrayed   Chapter 131: The Man Who Said Nothing

The man captured at the quarry did not speak. Not when the officers found him.Not when they brought him to the station. Not even when Bethwel sat across from him for nearly an hour.He simply stared at the table. His face carried no expression.Bethwel placed the evidence bag containing the old key on the table."Do you know what this opens?"Nothing.Bethwel waited."You were at the storage building."Silence."You ran when the police arrived."Nothing."You were not alone."The man's eyes moved slightly. It was the first reaction Bethwel had seen.Bethwel noticed. He leaned forward."Where is the other man?"The prisoner looked at him.For several seconds, their eyes remained locked. Then the man smiled. It wasn't a nervous smile. It was almost pitying.Bethwel leaned back."What is funny?"The man lowered his eyes.Still nothing.Bethwel stood."Take him back."The officers came in.As they led the man away, Bethwel looked at the key again. There was something unusual about it.It

The vehicle moved through the darkness without its headlights for several seconds.Alex noticed the mistake immediately."Why are the lights off?"Patricia looked at him."What?"He switched them back on."Nothing."But his eyes remained on the road behind them. They had barely left the compound, yet Alex had already checked the mirrors three times.Patricia noticed."Someone is following us?""I don't know.""You just said nothing.""I don't want to alarm you unnecessarily."She gave him a sharp look."After everything we've discovered, I think we're past unnecessary alarm."Alex almost smiled."Fair enough."He took a different road. Then another.Patricia watched him carefully."Where are we going?""Back to the quarry.""Because of the symbol?""Yes."She held her handbag tightly."Do you think Glen was there?""I think somebody wanted us to believe he was."Patricia frowned."That's different.""Very."The silence that followed was heavy.Neither wanted to say what they were thin

  • The Wife He Betrayed   Chapter 129: The Photograph

Patricia did not sleep. She lay on her side, facing away from Alex, with her eyes open. The photograph was still in her mind.Glen.Alive.Standing beside a wall bearing the word WAORE.She had seen the picture only for a few seconds, but that was enough. She could still remember his face. The slight tilt of his head. The expression he always wore when someone took a photograph without warning. Her son.She slowly turned toward Alex.He was asleep.Or at least he appeared to be.Patricia wondered how long he had possessed the photograph. And why he had never shown it to her.Her first instinct was anger. Her second was fear. But beneath both was something stronger.Hope.If Alex had a recent photograph of Glen, then perhaps he wasn't simply chasing rumours.Perhaps he had actually found him.Patricia closed her eyes. For the first time in days, she allowed herself to imagine Glen walking through the front door. She imagined Faith running toward him.She imagined herself holding him so

  • The Wife He Betrayed   Chapter 128: The Other Side

Alex remained motionless beside the tunnel. The piece of paper felt strangely light between his fingers.Yet the sentence written on it seemed heavier than anything he had carried all night. You are looking for Glen in the wrong place. He read it again. There was no signature. No threat. No explanation.Only nine words.Someone knew what he was doing.More importantly, someone knew what he was looking for.Alex looked toward the mouth of the tunnel. The security camera remained fixed on the same angle.A blind spot.He suddenly understood why.It wasn't necessarily meant to hide someone entering the tunnel. It could have been meant to hide someone leaving it.He stepped backward. His phone vibrated.Bethwel.Alex answered."Tell me."Bethwel's voice was low."The name I mentioned.""Yes.""I've been checking further.""And?""It doesn't appear only in Daniel's file."Alex became still."Where else?""Property records. An old company transaction. And one other document.""What document

  • The Wife He Betrayed   Chapter 127: The Name She Had Never Heard

Patricia remained seated on the edge of the bed long after the message arrived. Now you know why your father disappeared. Her eyes remained fixed on the screen. The name written beneath Grace's warning in the notebook was still fresh in her mind.A name she had never heard before. She picked up the notebook again. The page was old, but the handwriting was unmistakably Grace's.Patricia traced the sentence with her finger. If they ever come looking for my baby, Daniel must never lead them to her.Why would Daniel lead anyone to her?And who were they?Patricia turned the page.Nothing.She turned another.Nothing.The notebook had become silent again, as though whoever had written those words had deliberately stopped at the precise point where Patricia would begin asking questions. She closed it.Then she opened the drawer beside her bed and placed it inside. She locked the drawer. But before putting the key away, she looked at it for a long moment. She had spent much of her life belie

Patricia stood beside the wardrobe with her phone in her hand. You found the photograph. She read the message again. Then the second one.Now open the notebook. Her eyes moved slowly toward the handbag hanging from the chair. The notebook was there. She had taken it from Daniel's locked drawer that afternoon, intending to examine it later. She had not told Agnes. She had not told Bethwel. And she certainly had not told Alex.Yet somebody knew.Patricia's fingers tightened around the phone."Who are you?" she whispered. There was no response. She waited.Nothing.She placed the phone on the bed and opened her handbag. The small notebook looked ordinary. Its brown cover had become worn with age, and several of its pages were slightly curled.Patricia turned it over. There was nothing written on the cover. She opened it.The first pages contained Daniel's handwriting.Names.Dates.Telephone numbers.Meeting notes.Business figures. Then, halfway through the notebook, the writing changed
