Clara's POV

The photograph lay on my desk beside a stack of old publishing records.

I'd barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the scratched-out face of the woman standing beside the little girl. Then I remembered the red words on the back.

DO NOT RETURN HER.

Someone had wanted me kept away from my family. The question was why.

I was still studying the photograph when Papa knocked and entered my room.

"Have you eaten anything this morning?"

I glanced at the untouched breakfast beside

Clara’s POVI kept the pregnancy test result inside my bag all the way home.Every few minutes, my hand drifted toward it, as if touching the folded paper would make the news feel more real.I was pregnant.Adrian's child was growing inside me, and he had no idea. The thought should have made me happy. Instead, it brought back the image of him leaving our bedroom the morning after we had been together, choosing Isabella without even asking what I had wanted to tell him.I pressed my forehead against the car window.I couldn't tell him yet. Not when I was still trying to understand what this pregnancy meant for my health, and not when I had no idea how he would react. When I arrived at the Montecillo estate, Daniel was waiting in the sitting room with a folder in his hand."How did the appointment go?" he asked.I forced a small smile. "The doctor wants me to return for more tests.""Is it serious?""They need more information before they can say anything."It wasn't exactly a lie. I s

Clara’s POVI barely made it to the bathroom before I threw up.For several minutes, I gripped the edge of the sink, waiting for the nausea to pass. I had blamed my recent weakness on stress, medication, and sleepless nights spent investigating the records surrounding my disappearance. But this had been happening too often.I lifted my head and stared at my reflection. My face looked pale, and my hands trembled. Then I remembered my last period. My stomach tightened."No," I whispered. The following morning, I asked one of the estate staff to take me to a clinic. I told my family I wanted to discuss the nausea with a doctor. I didn't want to worry them before I knew what was happening. After examining me and asking about my symptoms, the doctor recommended a pregnancy test.I waited alone in the examination room, twisting my fingers together. When the doctor returned, she carried my results."Clara, your pregnancy test is positive."For a moment, I couldn't breathe."I'm pregnant?""Y

Clara's POVReturn to sender.I read the words again on my phone. They were barely visible in the photograph Daniel had sent me, pressed faintly into an old sheet of paper. Beneath them was a partial date: October 16, eighteen years ago.The missing ledger had supposedly been transferred the following day.I opened my brown notebook and wrote two questions.Who was the sender? Why was the ledger never returned?I had spent so many years without knowing where I came from. Now that I finally had a family and a name that belonged to me, someone seemed determined to keep the past buried. But I had learned not to mistake suspicion for proof. The names in the documents could mean something. They could also be misleading.I called Daniel.“Did the examiner identify the sender?”“Not yet. The impression may have come from another sheet placed over the register. They need to examine the original page before they can recover anything more.”“Can we get the original?”“The storage company has ag

Daniel's POVThe name beneath the instruction bothered me more than I wanted to admit.Rafael Montecillo. Our father insisted he had never ordered anyone to hide Clara’s records, yet his name appeared in the intake register connected to the missing correspondence ledger.I called him again.“Tell me exactly what you found,” he said.I placed the documents in front of me. “An intake register connected to RC-17-04. It says the file had to be kept separate from the Ashford records. Your name appears beneath the instruction.”Father was silent for a moment.“I never instructed anyone to hide your sister’s records.”“Did you authorize a separate file?”“I authorized confidential files during the partnership. We handled sensitive correspondence involving both families. But I cannot say this instruction was mine simply because my name appears on a surviving copy.”“Could someone have used your authority?”“Yes.”His answer came quickly.I leaned back in my chair. “Then we need to find out wh

  • The Wife He Lost The Heiress I Became    Chapter 42: The Appointment No One Remembered

Daniel’s POVThe appointment record was only one page long, but I had read it so many times that I could remember every line.October 19. Follow-up concerning the restricted Montecillo correspondence.Below it was a reference to RC-17-04, the same account code found on the transfer record and the Northbridge invoice.Someone had arranged a meeting after the collection was supposedly released. Yet the appointment book itself was missing, and the surviving copy didn't identify who had attended.I called our legal team."Have the original document examined," I instructed. "I want the paper, ink, handwriting, and filing history checked. We need to know whether it genuinely belongs to the archive.""We've arranged an inspection with the property management firm," our lawyer replied. "We'll also request any surviving visitor logs.""And the name on the collection instruction?""We haven't established whether it refers to Adrian Ashford. The document authorizes a release, but it doesn't prov

  • The Wife He Lost The Heiress I Became    Chapter 41: The Company Behind the Lie

Daniel’s POVThe company had been dissolved for sixteen years, but someone had made sure its records survived.By eight in the morning, I was in the conference room with our legal team, reviewing documents recovered from the former administrative company's accountant. One name appeared at the top of the payment record.Northbridge Consulting Services.I turned the page toward our lawyer. "Who owned it?""We've confirmed its registration and two changes of address. The beneficial ownership records are incomplete, though. We're requesting archived filings.""So we don't know whether it belonged to the Ashfords or the Montecillos.""Correct. The payment alone doesn't establish that."I nodded. I wouldn't let suspicion turn into an accusation. Clara had already suffered enough without our family making the same mistake of deciding what the truth should be before the evidence was complete. Our records specialist placed a faded invoice beside the payment entry."This is more useful," she sai
