Chapter 3

Autor: Year on Year
Michael took a deep breath. "Fine. Maybe I didn't think enough about how you felt tonight, and I'm sorry. But take back what you said about divorce. I don't want to hear it again."

"I'm not taking it back," I said.

"Sadie Everett!"

I shouted back, even louder. "Why are you yelling? You think being louder makes you right? When you embarrassed me in front of Emily tonight, did you stop to think about how I felt? And now you're yelling at me?"

His chest heaved. "So now you're keeping score? Because I cracked open a crab leg for her and not for you? Because I talked to her instead of you? Sadie, when did you get so petty?"

I walked to the doorway and shoved him aside. "Fine. I'm petty. I'm so petty I can't stand knowing my husband has feelings for someone else. Happy now?"

I stepped into the guest room and glanced back at him. "I'm calling a lawyer tomorrow. We can talk about dividing everything then."

I shut the door.

For a few seconds, there was silence on the other side. Then came a heavy thud. Michael had punched the door.

"Sadie! Open the door! Let's talk this through!"

I ignored him.

His footsteps receded, followed by the slam of our bedroom door.

Before that day, I'd never imagined we'd end up here.

The next morning, I woke to Michael and Emily talking in the living room.

A takeout breakfast was spread across the coffee table, with coffee, pancakes, and scrambled eggs still hot.

Emily saw me and immediately stood, all smiles. "Morning. I picked up breakfast. Come eat with us."

She sounded completely at home, like this was her place.

I stood in the guest-room doorway, staring at them in disbelief. "Why is she here?"

Michael set down his fork and cleared his throat.

"Her place is old, and the plumbing and wiring both need repairs. It's not safe for her to stay there right now. She'll stay with us for a while and move back once everything's fixed."

I walked slowly to the middle of the living room and looked from Michael to Emily.

"Say that again."

"She's staying here for a while."

"No."

Emily's smile froze.

Michael finally looked up at me. "Sadie, can you not do this? She just got back. She barely knows anyone here, and she can't stay at her place right now. What's wrong with letting her stay for a few days?"

I walked over to the dining table but didn't sit down. "What about me? I'm your wife, and I'm saying no. Half this place is mine. I get a say in who stays here."

Emily immediately put up her hands, looking hurt. "Please don't be mad. It really is just for a few days. If it bothers you that much, I'll leave. It's just that my place is so old—"

"Then stay at a hotel," I cut in.

"Hotels are expensive. She just got back, and she doesn't have steady work yet."

I turned to Michael. "How is that my problem? Whether she has a steady job or can afford a hotel, why is any of that your problem? Why is it our problem?"

Michael got to his feet, visibly angry. "Sadie, do you have to be so harsh? She's my friend. She's having a hard time, so of course I'm going to help her out. What's wrong with that?"

"Help her out? Your idea of helping her out is letting her stay in our place so I can wake up every morning and find her sitting in my living room eating breakfast?"

Emily's eyes reddened, and her voice wavered. "Sadie, I really don't mean anything by this. Michael and I really are just friends. We've known each other for years. If I wanted to come between you two, why would I wait until now? Please don't get the wrong idea."

I turned to her. "I told you, there's no misunderstanding here. You can drop the act."

Michael shouted, "Sadie! Enough! You've been making a big deal out of this since last night. Are you ever going to stop?"

I looked at him. "I've already said no. Either she goes, or I do. You choose."

I squinted up at the sky and hitched my bag higher on my shoulder."I just feel relieved. It's like a huge weight's been lifted," I said.My phone rang. It was a call from Ivan."Sadie, how did the hearing go?""Pretty well.""Then let's celebrate tonight. Dinner's on me.""Sure."I hung up and headed down the courthouse steps. I heard quick footsteps behind me."Sadie!"Michael hurried after me and stopped on the steps. His eyes were red and swollen, and his voice was hoarse."Sadie, give me one more chance. Just one."I stopped but didn't turn around."Michael, do you know what your biggest problem is?""What?"He took a step closer, a hint of cautious hope in his voice.I finally turned to look at him. "You always thought I'd wait for you. You always thought no matter how far you pushed me, I'd never leave."You thought once we were married, I wasn't going anywhere, so you could stop trying and start taking me for granted. Now you know better."His mouth opened, but

I hung up and blocked that number too. That afternoon, Serene called from a coworker's phone. Her voice was even sharper than last time."Sadie, you think you're really something, don't you? Mom got so worked up over this that she ended up in the hospital. Happy now?""Send me her room number. I'll send a fruit basket. Michael can pay for it, though. He's the one who upset her."Serene cursed and hung up.I set my phone down and went back to organizing the evidence.Across from me, Ms. Hewitt worked her way through everything I'd put together. As she read, a faint smile slowly appeared."Ms. Everett, you're in a very strong position. Your name is on the deed, you have solid evidence that Emily was living there with Michael, and the bank records show what he spent on her."She closed the folder and folded her hands on the table."Unless they can successfully challenge the evidence, I'd expect the court to grant the divorce. We can also make a case for you to receive more in the

I stopped in the entryway and glanced back at Michael and Emily.Emily stood partly hidden behind him, her eyes red. Michael stood there with his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles popped, his eyes bloodshot."Michael, not once through any of this have you thought you did anything wrong. In your mind, you were just helping a friend. You were just being sentimental about someone from your past. You were just being softhearted."And somehow, I'm the one making a big deal out of nothing. I'm unreasonable. I'm the one who can't be more understanding."But since Emily came back, every single thing you've done for her is something you never did for me. Did you ever crack open a crab leg for me? Did you ever ask if work was wearing me out? Did you even know how heavy my suitcase was when I moved out?"His lips trembled. He swallowed, but he couldn't say a word.I opened the door and walked out. The hallway light came on, casting a harsh white glow across the floor.Just as the elev

I slipped the new key into my pocket."You—"Michael started to speak, but I cut him off. "I'm here to get my things. Once I have them, I'm leaving."I went into our bedroom, dragged the dusty suitcase out of the corner, and started packing clothes into it.Michael followed me in. The moment he saw me packing clothes from the closet, his voice softened."Sadie, stop this. Put your things down and let's talk.""There's nothing to talk about. I've already had the divorce agreement drawn up. I'll send it to you tomorrow."His Adam's apple bobbed, and the color drained from his face.Emily stood in the doorway, twisting the apron ties around her fingers. Her eyes were red again."Sadie, you really have it wrong. I sleep in the guest room, and Michael sleeps in here. Nothing has happened between us."I kept folding clothes without looking at her. "The guest room? I slept in that bed last week. I changed the sheets right before I left. Did you sleep well?"Her eyes grew even redde

I stood outside the door with my bag in one hand and the useless key clenched in the other. The hallway light went out, so I stomped once to bring it back on. Harsh white light washed over the number on the door.I drew two slow breaths, then pounded on the door three times. By the third knock, my palm had gone numb.Quick footsteps came from inside, slippers slapping softly against the floor. The door opened.Emily stood there in my pale blue apron, a spatula flecked with oil in one hand. The smell of glazed pork ribs drifted out from inside. She tilted her head with a smile. "Oh. You're here."I pushed at the door. "Move."She didn't budge. She leaned against the frame, holding the spatula across her chest."Michael said you're not welcome here. If you want your things, you'll have to wait until he gets back."I looked her straight in the eye. "This is my home. My name is on the deed."She laughed softly and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "But the lock's bee

The specialist adjusted his glasses and got to work without asking anything else.I'd recorded the video before I moved out. It showed the pink slippers under the coffee table, an open suitcase in the guest room, and skincare products in the bathroom that weren't mine.Afterward, I went straight to the bank.I printed out six months of statements and highlighted several unusually large transactions. Every one of them was money Michael had spent on Emily. He'd paid for dinners, covered her rent, and sent her 5,000 dollars in a transfer labeled "furniture." I went through the transactions one by one, checking the amounts and filing each receipt in the folder.By the time I left the bank, the sun was blazing. I stood on the steps for a moment and squinted up at the sky.The folder felt heavy in my hands. It held two years' worth of things I'd overlooked, now turned into evidence. I used to think keeping track of things like this was too calculating, even beneath me.Now I knew bett
