Chapter 2

Autor: Kian Rae
"What are you waiting for? It's time for some ravioli!" Katy said.

Lily and I watched Katy in a daze as she plated the ravioli, steam rising from them and filling the living room.

"Who… Who are you?" Lily mustered up the courage to ask.

"I'm Justin's wife. Honey, tell her." Katy looked at me innocently.

I nodded slowly. "Yes… She's my wife."

I had no idea where this woman had come from. All I could do was give Lily a look, silently signaling her to stay calm.

"Go on. Try this. I made your favorite cheese ravioli."

Katy smiled and pushed a plate of ravioli toward me. As I took it from her, I worked up the nerve to touch her hand. It was warm.

So she wasn't a ghost?

My thoughts were all over the place. I picked up a ravioli but didn't dare take a bite.

"What's up, honey? Is it because I didn't make them right? Or are you not happy to see me?" Katy looked at me, tears in her eyes.

I couldn't help but stammer. "I… I'm happy to see you, but are you supposed… to be dead?"

"What nonsense!" Katy suddenly sounded cheerful, as if she had just heard the most ridiculous joke. "I was sick, so I went to the hospital for treatment. Now I've fully recovered. It's New Year's too, so of course I came home to celebrate with you."

"But you got ALS." Lily couldn't help but peek out from behind me. "But that's a terminal illness. How could you possibly be cured?"

Katy paled slightly before breaking into a smile. "I was very lucky… My husband took such good care of me over the years. And now I'm completely cured."

As if to prove it, she spun around on the spot.

Lily discreetly tugged on my sleeve and lowered her voice, saying, "What do we do? Maybe she's crazy. We should call the cops."

I nodded. The moment I reached for my phone on the table, the doorbell rang again.

Lily and I froze. Neither of us dared to move. Instead, Katy walked over as if nothing was wrong and opened the door.

"Katy! Justin! I'm here to crash your New Year's Eve dinner!"

The visitor was Matthew Dugan, Katy's brother. I hadn't heard from him in three years.

I lunged at him and grabbed him. "Matthew! What brings you here? Your sister… She's alive!"

"Justin, what are you talking about?" Matthew looked amused as he handed the gifts to Katy. He walked into the living room and saw Lily, frozen in place.

"Oh? You have a guest?" he asked.

"Yes. She was already here when I got back." Katy answered with a smile, then her gaze fell on me. "Honey, you haven't told me who she is."

Lily's face flushed instantly. "I'm his wife, Lily Fisk! We just got married last year!"

She whipped around to face me, barely concealing the anger in her voice. "Justin, say something!"

I flinched at her shout and quickly grabbed her hand. Then I turned to Matthew and raised my voice. "That's right. She's my wife.

"Matthew, you were holding your sister's urn at her funeral. You cried so much that you almost passed out. It's only been a few years. Have you forgotten already?"

"Justin, what are you talking about?" Matthew frowned, clearly baffled. "What funeral? What urn… Did you get your friend to come here and mess with us? It's not funny!"

Hearing that, Lily shoved my hand away, looking at me with growing suspicion.

A chill ran down my spine. I grabbed the car keys. "Fine! You don't believe me. Is that it? Let's go to the cemetery. See for yourself whether she's really dead!"

When we reached the cemetery, Katy's gravestone was exactly as I remembered it. I pointed triumphantly at the inscription and read it out.

"Katy Dugan. Beloved wife of Justin Lowell. Age 28."

"After that, the things you saw, heard, and even held in your arms… They were all just part of an act we put on for you," Katy continued, her voice as gentle as ever. "The doctors' announcement that they couldn't save me, my body, my urn, my gravestone… It was all fake.""We staged the entire show just for you. Do you like it?" She smiled. "The real me had been receiving treatment this whole time. I had the best specialists from abroad, the best medicine, and… time."Matthew unclenched his fists, but his voice grew colder. "And you, Justin? You moved on pretty quickly, didn't you?"It hadn't even been six months since the funeral, and you already started pursuing your colleague, huh?"Katy looked into the distance. "On your wedding day, I was in a wheelchair on the second floor of the cafe opposite your hotel. Matthew brought me there."She turned to look at me, and a chill ran through me. I never thought I would ever see those eyes again. "I saw you in your suit. You looked so

"You're right. I was different from everyone else." Katy's voice suddenly went calm. "But have you ever wondered why I was different?"She looked at me with tears in her eyes. "Do you remember taking me to the capital for a follow-up that winter?"She continued, "Something came up at your office, so you left me alone at the hospital. That day… a new specialist from abroad reviewed all my scans."Katy paused. "He told me that I had an extremely rare neurological disorder, and its symptoms were really similar to ALS. But… it wasn't terminal, and the chances of recovery were actually pretty high."I froze, the anger still written across my face."I was really thrilled." Katy's voice softened, as if she were back in that afternoon. "I wanted to tell you right away. I wanted to hold you and cry. I wanted to tell you that we still had a future together…"I was so excited that I tried to get up from my wheelchair, but I ended up falling to the ground." Katy looked at me, as if she wer

Katy and Matthew stood on either side of me. Seeing that I was awake, they looked at me at the same time, wearing the exact same smile. "Honey, you're awake." Katy's voice was as soft as a whisper. "Even in your sleep, you kept saying you wanted to come here to pray. We had no choice but to bring you up in a wheelchair."It was only then that I suddenly realized I was in a wheelchair, bundled up in a thick blanket. "To pray? What for?" I couldn't figure out what was going on."To pray for our child who passed away." Katy looked toward the valley in the distance. "I hope our child will rest in peace."I felt as if I had been struck by lightning, and a chill ran up my spine. "Our child? What child?""Justin, do you really not remember?" Matthew crouched down to meet my gaze."The last time we came up to Lullaby Mountain to pray, Katy was already pregnant."That was impossible!Goosebumps broke out all over my body, and memories came rushing back all at once. After Katy was d

I didn't say a word or even shake my head. Everything was beyond my understanding. Or maybe I really had lost my mind. Lily was crying so hard that her entire body was trembling. Her family had rushed over to see her. Furious, they pointed at me, wanting to beat me up, but she stopped them."It's not Justin's fault… I was the foolish one. I let a crazy man fool me, and I even married him…"Lily's family took her away, saying they were going straight to the courthouse to have the marriage annulled. Everything was over in the blink of an eye.I stared blankly at Katy and asked softly, "Is that really you?""Of course."Katy intertwined her cool fingers with mine. Her voice was soft and gentle, almost unreal."Honey, when I first got diagnosed with ALS, you stayed by my side and took good care of me. Now it's my turn to do the same for you."Matthew sat next to me too, resting a heavy hand on my shoulder. "Justin, I never got the chance to thank you."All these years, you took

The police officer flipped through his notes from earlier before looking up at me. "But you kept saying earlier that your wife, Katy Dugan, had died of ALS."Next to me, Matthew let out a scoff. "Justin's lying. ALS? Falling off a mountain? He made it all up!""I want a divorce!"Lily, who had remained silent all this time, finally couldn't take it anymore. Furious, she kept demanding a divorce. No matter how much I begged her, she wouldn't calm down. "Lily, you know me well. We're colleagues, remember! I took care of her for five years after she was diagnosed with ALS…"It was even on the news. Don't you remember? She really did die from ALS!""I don't know how you managed to have us all fooled!" Lily cut me off. "I heard about you at the office and thought you were a devoted husband. You stayed with your wife even after she was diagnosed with a terminal illness."That's why I agreed to marry you when you started pursuing me. I never imagined… this whole thing was just a lie!"

But Matthew shoved me aside and pointed at me furiously. "If you wanted to divorce my sister, you could've just said so. "Why bother putting up a fake gravestone just to mess with us? I knew something was off from the start. It's New Year's Eve. Why is this woman even in your house?"He spun around, pointing at Lily angrily. "So you're a homewrecker! Where did you even come from? Did you put him up to all this?"Katy also covered her face and began crying softly. "Honey… I was only sick for a few years. Why would you ever do this to me? I'm… I'm right here…"Lily froze, completely overwhelmed by the accusations. She looked at the furious Matthew, then at a tearful Katy. Finally, her gaze fell on me. Lily suddenly raised her hand and slapped me across the face. "Justin, I get it now! Your wife never died at all! "Terminal illness… A gravestone… This was all just a setup! You tricked me into marrying you! From the start, it was all a lie!"I'm going to call the cops on you! I'm
