Chapter 2

Author: AlphaGo
The smile at the corner of my mouth froze.

Full of hostility. Aggressive.

That was his assessment of me now, his mate.

I stared at his hand holding Chloe's wrist.

That hand had once shielded me without hesitation every time I got hurt in a duel or defied the elders. It had gently wiped the blood from my fingertips.

But now, he was shielding Chloe behind him, using the same words the council had once used to discipline me.

"I was just stating a fact."

I withdrew my gaze, my voice flat.

Cedric's eyes darkened.

He turned to Chloe, his tone softening.

"Stop crying. No one is going to drive you out."

Chloe sniffled and looked up at him, her eyes full of dependence.

"Alpha, thank you. Only you are this good to me."

What a touching scene.

I turned and set the wine glass on the table.

"Since the Alpha needs to take care of his guest, I won't disturb you."

I turned to leave.

"Stop."

Cedric's voice came from behind.

I stopped.

"Apologize to Chloe."

The hall went dead silent.

A circle of guests quietly gathered, everyone waiting.

Waiting for me, the wildest she-wolf, to issue a public death challenge. Waiting for me to bare my fangs and tear her apart. Waiting for me to break with the Alpha the way I'd broken with the elders.

In the past, I would have.

But now, I just found the whole play long and ridiculous.

I turned slowly, with just the right amount of apology, and bowed slightly to Chloe.

"Welcome home, Miss Chloe."

"I spoke out of turn just now. Don't take it to heart."

The posture was flawless. Not a single thing to criticize.

All the grievances Chloe had prepared were stuck in her throat.

Tears still hung on her lashes, but she froze. Crying or stopping, neither worked.

The guests who'd gathered to watch waited and waited, and when no drama came, they dispersed in disappointment.

Cedric was stunned.

He stared at me for a long time, as if looking at a stranger.

After a moment, obvious satisfaction surfaced in his eyes.

"Good that you know you were wrong."

He patted the back of Chloe's hand, his tone unusually gentle, his gaze returning to my face.

"If you'd been half as gentle and obedient as Chloe before, fought less with the elders and the pack, how much worry could I have been spared?"

You see. Not a single word of apology. But he was already complaining that I hadn't been gentle and sensible enough before.

The fingers at my side curled, then slowly relaxed.

When I looked up again, I smiled, docile and obedient.

"Yes. From now on, I'll be very sensible and obedient."

Then I raised my hand and slowly unfastened the moonstone necklace from my throat, pressing it into Chloe's cold palm.

"This suits you."

"The gowns I used to wear to banquets, I'll have them sent to your room soon. A few alterations and they'll fit."

"Miss Chloe, don't be polite."

Chloe clutched the necklace and looked up at Cedric in a panic.

Cedric actually didn't stop her.

He even spoke lightly. "The Luna is giving it to you. Take it."

Chloe's eyes lit up.

All that gratitude went to him. Not a bit to me.

Cedric put an arm around my shoulder, his voice full of barely concealed satisfaction.

"You've finally learned to behave."

"As a reward, on the night of the full moon in three days, I'll hold the marking ceremony with you."

I smiled too, word by word. "Okay."

Cedric thought he had tamed me.

He didn't know. On the day of the marking ceremony, I would be gone.

I stepped back half a pace, avoiding his hand."I don't like wearing things other people have worn. It's dirty."One sentence froze Cedric's hand in midair. Not just the necklace. Him too."Cedric, do you know why I put away my claws, stopped fighting, and became so sensible and obedient?"I looked quietly into his broken eyes, word by word, utterly clear."Because I used to be fearless, believing you would always stand behind me.""The moment you shielded Chloe, complained I was full of hostility, and forced me to rein in my wildness and kneel to apologize, you died in my heart.""I won't bare my claws for a corpse again. And I won't dull my edge for you again."Cedric's tall frame swayed, as if every bone had been pulled out of him.Security stepped forward then, politely but firmly blocking him from me."Sir, please leave. Don't disturb Miss Selena's work."That night, London was hit by torrential rain. When I came out of the celebration dinner and reached the ground floor of my apa

One week later. The London International Couture Jewelry Exhibition. The moment Rebirth was displayed, it stunned the entire European jewelry world. The broken wolf fang and the pigeon-blood ruby collided in breathtaking beauty. The display was surrounded by collectors and top buyers from around the world.Mandy walked over with champagne, beaming."Lina, the heads of Cartier and Royal Jewelry were just asking about your name. This time, we've made a real name for ourselves!"I raised my glass and clinked it lightly against hers, my eyes full of a confidence and composure I'd never had before.Just then, a commotion came from the exhibition entrance.Several security guards tried to stop someone but were forced back by an overwhelming presence.I looked up.Cedric, in a travel-worn black coat, strode through the crowd, his eyes locked on me.In just a few days, this once-proud, arrogant Black Moon Alpha had dark stubble on his chin, bloodshot eyes, and a haggard look that bordered on m

Ten minutes later, the tablet was placed in front of Cedric. The surveillance footage clearly replayed everything from that afternoon. In the video, Chloe had not gone to "clean" at all.She swaggered into the master bedroom, rummaged around the vanity for a long time, and when she saw the combination lock, went straight to the nightstand and flipped through my old diary. From the title page, she guessed the code—our anniversary. After opening the box, she picked up the wolf-fang pendant and gave the camera a provocative, vicious sneer. Then she raised her hand high and, with the heel of her shoe, smashed the wolf fang hard onto the carpet!Immediately after, hearing my car outside the door, she messed up her hair and started fake-crying while clutching the broken fang. And at the end of the footage was Cedric rushing in, stopping my slap without asking a single question, accusing me of "reverting to my old ways," and shoving me down.In the video, I sat on the carpet, blood streaming

On my third day in London, Mandy and I rented an independent studio in Mayfair.Away from the constraints of the Black Moon Pack, even my breathing felt lighter.She-wolves of the Northern Territory were raised from birth with one idea—The Alpha is the sky. Meek submission and becoming Luna is the highest honor a she-wolf can achieve. In the Northern Territory, I had once charged into battle for Cedric and fought the elders. Then, to cater to his discipline, I had put away my claws step by step and given up my jewelry design career outside of vacations, nearly turning myself into a docile, obedient pet.Looking back now, it was laughably foolish.I soaked the bloodstained half of the wolf fang in purified water, washed it clean bit by bit, and drew my first design sketch since arriving in London.I traced the pattern of thorns in rose gold and set the broken half of the wolf fang in the center. At the broken tip, I embedded a vivid pigeon-blood ruby.Like a drop of blood that never dr

The flight to London taxied onto the runway at exactly eight in the evening. In the Northern Territory, the moon should have been at its highest point.According to Black Moon Pack tradition, the sacred fire should have been lit before the Moon Goddess altar by now.I turned off my phone, snapped the old SIM card in half, and dropped it into the cabin's trash bag.The moment I put on the eye mask, I fell into the most peaceful sleep I'd had in three months. At that same moment, at the Moon Goddess altar of the Black Moon Pack. The pack elders and the guests from every major Northern pack had all arrived.Cedric stood at the highest point of the altar in a finely tailored white ceremonial suit.He kept checking his watch, his brow furrowing tighter and tighter.Chloe wore the silver-white couture gown I'd had sent to her, the moonstone necklace around her neck, standing timidly by the seat of honor below the altar."Alpha, is the Luna still angry with me? Is that why she won't come..."

For the next two days, I didn't see Cedric again. He seemed completely immersed in the world of that rogue wolf, Chloe.Rumors flew through the pack."Did you hear? Selena's jewelry design exhibition was canceled, and she didn't even make a sound.""Only a matter of time. Before, she'd even fight the elders. Now the Alpha's got her completely under control. I heard the Alpha personally asked for the venue. He's been teaching that rogue wolf the Moon Goddess prayers every day. When would he have time for her?"I ignored it all.Every day I was busy coordinating asset transfer details with David, busy processing the departure documents to leave the Northern Territory.David worked fast.In my personal account lay a sum large enough for me to start over anywhere. On the afternoon of the marking ceremony.I'd just received my travel documents when the housekeeper called."Miss Selena, please come back. Something's happened!"The housekeeper's voice was almost in tears. My heart tightened.
