Chapter 4

Penulis: Charleston Step
Since I could not wrap my head around Josie's behavior, I stopped thinking about it. I was not going to waste time on strangers–not anymore.

I carried on with my studies and checked out the city.

On the day I was about to leave, I headed for the Disnelleland theme park. I did not expect to bump into Xander and Josie again.

"Josephine, why are you stalking Xander again?" gasped Josie, pretending to be stumped. She continued, "If you love him, you have to accept that friendship comes first to him, and love second. We're only friends having a good time. Don't overthink it."

The same excuse over and over again, always trying to provoke me so I would lose my cool.

I could not be bothered with her, so I turned to leave when Xander called out to me, "Since you're here, join us."

After a moment of surprise, I finally understood. His sudden concern was not out of love, but of guilt.

The kiss he had with Josie had crossed the line, after all.

"Xander, I want some ice cream."

After sending Xander away, Josie looked at me in disgust. "Why won't you just get lost? He's only asking you to stay out of pity. The person he truly loves is me."

I finally asked, "Since you only treat him as a friend, why do you care who he truly loves?"

Josie snickered. "Back then, he wasn't good enough for me. But look at how amazing he's become! He is finally a worthy match for me."

She added, "No man would ever cherish someone like you who keeps sticking around. Only by playing hot and cold, he'd forever go mad for me.

"I know that you two have booked your divorce dates. Get it done today, or I'll show you what I'm capable of!"

Before I could see what she was 'capable' of, a sudden commotion erupted among the crowd.

Two men who had gotten into an argument while lining up started fighting.

Their burly bodies slammed toward us.

Nearby, Xander threw the ice cream in his hands to the ground and yelled, "Josie!" He ran over, looking nervous.

In the blink of an eye, he wrapped his arms around Josie and pulled her to the side, while I was knocked to the ground. Warm blood trickling down my head blurred my vision.

He was calling out to her. I should have known.

I headed to the hospital on my own to get my wounds cleaned and dressed. When I exited the hospital, Xander arrived in a rush.

He opened the door to the passenger seat and pushed me inside without saying anything.

"Josie fainted at the sight of blood. I had to settle her first, but I came as soon as I could."

While waiting for the traffic light, he tapped his fingers on the steering wheel before saying determinedly, "I admit I had neglected you, but when something happened to you, I finally realized that the person most important to me isn't Josie. It's you.

"Josie, let's cancel the divorce. I promise I won't ever let you suffer again."

My wound throbbed faintly as I was in a daze.

Xander finally decided to choose me. The Josie he was referring to was finally me.

Past-Me would have cried tears of joy, but it was all too late.

I would never forget how, when I was in danger, he went to someone else's aid instead of me.

"Too happy to speak?" He smiled and caressed my head.

He added, "I have a surprise for you tonight. It's something you've always wanted."

Oh? Too bad, the only thing I wanted at that moment was for him to leave.

When he had just parked outside the city hall, his phone rang.

It was his personalized ringtone for Josie.

"Xander, I think someone is following me. I'm really scared."

After a moment of hesitation, Xander handed me the documents. "You go ahead and cancel them. I'll come as soon as I can. I'm only treating her as a good friend now–honest. You have to believe me."

"Alright," I replied calmly, as if this was not the last time we were seeing each other.

After getting the divorce certificate, I scanned the place where I had lived for the past seven years.

The place where I once thought was home had slowly turned into a prison.

After a moment, I placed Xander's certificate on his desk, along with a thumb drive. That was my surprise for him.

Maybe a scare, too.

After all, in the thumb drive were not only Josie's disgusting acts, but also the secrets to how he managed to climb through the ranks so quickly over the past few years.

Even if I was leaving, I was not going to let them off the hook. This was payback for being lied to and the suffering of the past 10 years.

Before night fell, I left without looking back.

"What misunderstanding?"Mary finally put down her high heels out of respect for Chiara. She held onto my shoulder as she put on her shoes. The four of us went over to the bench to take a seat, looking serious."Stephen and I are in a fake engagement. I like girls, and he doesn't. This was why we decided to get engaged to essentially, well, gag our families.""What?" asked Mary, flabbergasted. She looked like she was in pain. "Stephen, I think I'd prefer you to be more of a jerk than not having any offspring!"She immediately corrected herself. "Wait. No. You can't do any of those! Don't be a jerk!"Stephen slapped his forehead."What you say is discriminatory. I just never found girls attractive since I was young. I preferred working. So, rather than marry someone that I didn't like and waste her time, I'd prefer to work together with Chiara."Stephen added, "Until the day I met Josephine."Someone as well-composed as him suddenly blushed ever so slightly. "The first time I s

I did not go to the court hearing, but I was surprised to hear that Xander wanted to see me. He knew I was the one who gave the police the leads that led to his arrest and deportation.Did he not hate me?I was debating with myself when my phone rang. Mary had invited me over for dinner."Josie, you've gotten thinner. You need to eat more."I finally understood how other children feel when their parents or grandparents constantly complain about how thin and underfed they were.I remembered the envy I felt toward other children since I was a kid. I always thought that if my mother were around, she would have pampered me as well. Finally, after all these years, someone cared for me. If my mother in heaven were to see this, I was sure she would be relieved.Whenever I headed over to the Grand family, it was always Mary and me. The others were always busy working. That day, Stephen came too, along with his fiancee, Chiara Sarte.I politely greeted them.Chiara returned the greeti

"Silence!" The judge banged his gavel, but he still gave Josie a chance to defend herself.Josie sobbed, "I really am innocent. Xander and I are just friends. We were just playing a kissing game. It wasn't real at all! He has liked me since he was young, but I always turned him down. Our friends can be my witnesses!"Seeing how the public opinion was turning on him, I was worried they'd misunderstand, so I suggested marriage to help him out of the scandal."Our marriage was fake! I never expected he'd blame me and try to get me to repay his debt!"I've been too kind to help this monster, but I finally see him for who he is! I want a divorce from him! This has nothing to do with me!"Josie sobbed hard as her voice trembled. She managed to gain some pity from the crowd.Xander sneered and got his lawyer to hand in evidence."Josie claimed to be my friend, but the only reason she returned to the country was to break up my family. She's a habitual family wrecker."Photo after phot

"Josie, it's me."One day, I received an international call from Xander. He sounded a little hoarse. "I don't have much time, so I'll be quick."I know I've broken your heart, and I don't blame you for having all that scandalous information, but I'm really sure of my heart. I really do love you."You might've seen the news. I'm abroad right now, but I have a lot of money. Come and find me, why don't you? We can find a place to hide, in our own little paradise. We can live together."You said before that home is where I am. Can you give me another chance?"I'll swear on my life that I will only love you from now on."Having been together for so long, Xander had rarely expressed his feelings. In the past 10 years, I would have been thrilled if he had even given me a fraction of what he was expressing that moment.Did he really think that we could go back to before after so many things had happened? Did he really think he could wipe away all of my pain just by saying how much he

Mary was bewildered."What on earth are you talking about? I want Josie to be my goddaughter. What does this have to do with you?"Stephen emotionlessly replied, "I want to be an only child. Sure, you can care for her and look after her–no objections here. But you can't make her your goddaughter."Mary was furious and flustered. She almost picked up her bag and hit Stephen with it, losing her composure as an elegant, wealthy lady.I pulled her back.I imagined that this would be a sensitive topic in wealthy families. Perhaps, having an extra goddaughter in the family meant another threat to the family wealth. It was understandable.…From that day onward, I had an aunt-figure who cared for me. Other than that, my life remained pretty much the same.I was busy with the project and improving myself daily. My life felt full and grounded.Gradually, I finally had some free time. I had the time and energy to find out what had happened to Xander.I heard that the night that I left,

I was baffled. Why would Mrs. Grand look for me?Still in a daze, I walked over to the entrance of the lab to see an elegant, well-dressed lady sitting in her luxury car, craning her neck to look around. The moment she spotted me, she got out of the car in a hurry, visibly excited."Hello! I'm a friend of Sara's, your mother."She held me and sized me up. Seconds later, tears began to fall. When she saw how bewildered I looked, she quickly composed herself."I'm sorry, I must've scared you."Josephine Summers, yes? Do you have time to spare right now? Or perhaps later, maybe even over a meal? I have so many things I want to say to you."She was my mother's friend. Of course, I had time for her. I informed my team leader about taking some time off, then I got into her car.On the journey, I quickly learned.Mrs. Grand, or Mary Shelly, was my mother's best friend. They were best friends growing up together in the orphanage, constantly looking out for one another. When they were
