Chapter 3

Penulis: Fortune Paws
On the bus ride back, I scrolled past a new update on Lena's social media feed.

The caption read: [The annoying person finally left! Now I can finally enjoy my birthday!]

Attached was a photo of Chester, Milford, and Collin gathered around the dining table. The spread was loaded with spicy buffalo wings, cheesy chili nachos, and, among others, Nashville hot chicken.

Every dish was something the doctor had strictly forbidden me from touching after my chemotherapy sessions.

Luckily, I hadn't stayed. Otherwise, it would have only been another exercise in self-humiliation. Out of that entire table of food, the only thing I would have been allowed to swallow was some corn.

Back at my apartment, I cooked myself a simple plate of pasta. For the first time, I didn't set out the three plush dolls to keep me company.

I ate my birthday meal completely alone. I ate until I was drenched in sweat, with tears and perspiration blurring my vision.

...

The next day, I went to my part-time shift at the Boba shop as usual.

Before leaving for Lake Tahoe, I needed to make sure the hospital would prescribe me enough painkillers to get me through the long drive.

I was still a little short on funds, but once I collected my wages for the last few days, it would be just enough.

The shop was running an outdoor promotion in front of the shopping mall that day. My assignment was to wear a heavy mascot costume and hand out flyers.

By midday, the sun was brutal. The thick material of the suit trapped the heat like an oven, suffocating me. Unable to endure it any longer, I pulled the massive headpiece off and crouched down in a shaded corner to gulp down some water.

A familiar voice suddenly drifted over from behind me. "Vicky?"

My hands froze, and I slowly turned my head.

Chester, Milford, Collin, and Lena were standing just a short distance away. The three men were laden with designer shopping bags. There was no need to guess who they were for.

Chester took in my sweat-drenched appearance, but his eyes held no pity or concern. There was only profound embarrassment and simmering anger.

"Didn't I give you an allowance?" he demanded, his voice tight with irritation. "What are you doing wearing a ridiculous outfit like this to pass out flyers on the street?

"Are you doing this on purpose to make people think we mistreat a sick girl? If a client from my company spots you, what do you think happens to my corporate reputation?"

"You give me $2,000 a month. The rent alone is $800," I retorted, tightening my grip on the water bottle. "The remaining money isn't even enough to cover my basic prescriptions. If I don't work part-time, how am I supposed to stay alive?"

Milford frowned, stepping forward to give me a hard shove. "You've got some nerve! How dare you talk back to Chester like that?"

Collin stood beside Lena, a complicated expression flitting across his features. Ultimately, he adopted his usual lecturing tone. "Vicky, you just spend money too recklessly. Lena doesn't even receive an allowance every month, and you don't hear her complaining, do you?"

"That's right," Milford snorted. "If you need money for medicine, just ask. Chester wouldn't say no. You're probably squandering your cash on useless things and feel too ashamed to ask for more!"

I opened my mouth, but the words withered on my tongue. Lena didn't need an allowance because she carried Chester's secondary credit card, racking up five-figure bills every month.

Meanwhile, even when I begged for my meager $2,000, I had to follow up repeatedly, enduring delays until the end of the month before it was sent to me like a piece of casual charity.

If I asked for more, would they give it to me? I knew deep down that arguing was pointless. It would only invite a fresh barrage of criticisms labeling me as ungrateful and unreasonable.

I kept my face cold, picking up the headpiece. "Just leave. Don't interfere with my job."

I brought the heavy mascot head down over my face, plunging my vision into instant darkness. But in the next instant, a violent force slammed into my back.

"You're not allowed to speak to my brothers like that!" Lena snapped.

The headpiece was so thick that even a light bump hurt. With that strong push, I stumbled forward, and my forehead slammed into the hard shell inside the costume.

Everything went black for a moment. I leaned against the wall, struggling to recover. Not a soul came over to check if I was injured.

Chester grabbed Lena's hand, asking anxiously, "Are you all right?"

Milford frowned. "She's wearing something so thick. Why did you push her? What if you hurt yourself?"

Collin gently comforted her. "Look at you, already learning how to defend your family."

While they were occupied with comforting her, I staggered away on uneven feet. My face was soaked, though I could no longer tell if it was sweat or tears.

By the time my shift concluded that evening, a massive, painful welt had risen across my forehead. The only silver lining was that it was payday.

I returned to my rental apartment carrying the $3,000 in cash wages I had just earned. I wrapped the bills meticulously in three layers of plastic film.

Early the next morning, I went to the hospital and handed the cash to the cashier. But when she looked up, her eyes hardened into an icy glare.

"Where did you get this, young lady?" she demanded.

I blinked, utterly confused. She slammed the stack of bills against the counter. "You look clean and put-together. Why are you doing this? Tell me, where did you get all these fake bills?"

  • The Winds of Lake Tahoe Never Reach Me   Chapter 10

From that day forward, the howling wind off Lake Tahoe became a nightmare that the three men could never outrun for the rest of their lives.Chester collapsed by the shoreline, cradling those few letters against his chest for what felt like an eternity. The thin stationery trembled violently in the gale, and his frame shook right along with it. Those few sheets of paper carried almost zero weight, yet they seemed to have crushed him inside.Milford sprinted along the water's edge like a lunatic, screaming my name into the empty sky. "Vicky! Come back! I was wrong! Hit me, curse me, anything... Just don't leave me!"He screamed until his vocal cords tore, his legs giving out as he crashed hard onto the rough gravel. Yet, he seemed numb to the pain; he simply knelt in the dirt, burying his face in his hands as a broken, agonizing sob tore out from his chest. He used to despise my tears more than anything. He had mocked me for being dramatic, accused me of weaponizing my suffering, a

I finally reached Lake Tahoe. When I arrived, the dawn had not yet broken. I parked my car on the gravel shoulder, steadying myself against the frame of the door for a long time before I could manage to take a few faltering steps toward the water. The distance to the shoreline wasn't long, but my progress was agonizingly slow. With every step forward, the pain inside my chest flared brighter, and the copper tang of blood kept welling up in the back of my throat.Yet, despite it all, a profound sense of quiet joy washed over me. Because against all odds, I had made it at the age of 20.There was no cake, no candles, and no one to wish me a happy birthday. But I had Lake Tahoe—the place we had promised years ago we would visit together.I sank onto the cool shore, pulling the sheets of stationery from my bag. The wind off the water was fierce, making the paper whip and chatter against my fingers.I used my medicine bottle to weigh down one corner, lowered my head, and began to writ

By the fourth day, the road ahead began to smear into an indistinct blur.Waves of suffocating darkness washed over my vision, and the pain in my stomach was brutal. I had to pull over to the shoulder, slumping against the steering wheel just to catch my breath. In the rearview mirror, low-hanging clouds pressed down against the horizon. I was almost there.I fished the medicine bottle from the console and shook it, but only two tablets rattled out. I was about to swallow them when the screech of tires braking violently echoed from behind. Before I could react, the driver's side door was wrenched open. A blast of cold air rushed into the cabin, and I looked up, dazed."Vicky!" Chester's voice cracked, shattering into a pitch of panic I had never heard before.Milford came rushing up right behind him, his eyes rimmed with a raw, ugly red. "Vicky, are you insane? Do you have any idea what you're doing? You know your body can't handle a drive like this!"Collin stood a few paces ba

I was still traveling west, chasing the horizon. After three days on the road, I finally noticed how empty the passenger seat looked. I'd left those plush dolls behind in that apartment. When I first made the choice to leave, I fully intended to bring them along. But during the chaotic blur of my departure, I forgot.Or perhaps, in the deepest corners of my subconscious, I never wanted to carry them with me. Chester, Milford, and Collin had changed a long time ago.The ones I truly yearned to take with me were the ghosts of who they used to be. I wanted the big brother who would anchor himself to my bed just to wipe the cold sweat from my skin.I wanted the second brother who would secretly cry until his eyes were raw, yet still force a ridiculous face just to make me laugh. And I wanted the childhood sweetheart who would squeeze my hand, swearing that he would celebrate every single one of my birthdays right by my side.I continued to drive westward. The skyscrapers outside the

Chester stood frozen in the entryway, entirely motionless. The three plush dolls just sat there on the sofa. Their stitching was crude, and the fabric was weathered, but their facial features had been crafted with meticulous care—especially the one designed in Chester's likeness.I had even stitched a tiny scrap of dark fabric onto its torso, mimicking the tailored suits he used to wear every day.Milford walked over, his hand trembling slightly as he nudged one of the figures. The doll toppled sideways onto the cushion, exposing a crumpled invoice that had been pinned beneath its weight. He bent down to retrieve it. The moment his eyes skimmed the paper, the color vanished from his face. The sheet was densely packed, covered line after line with the grim history of my medical treatments over the past few years.Chemotherapy, dialysis sessions, emergency room admissions, maximum-dosage painkillers...Collin stepped forward and yanked open the drawer of the coffee table. It was ch

Days after I left, the three men took Lena to the mall to pick up her custom jewelry. As their car cruised down an avenue in the southern district, Collin's eyes suddenly caught something in the display window of an old pawn shop. Even though the vehicle had already cleared the storefront, he whipped his head around violently."Pull over!" he urgently called out.Chester slammed on the brakes and furrowed his brow. "What's wrong?"Not answering, Collin threw the door open, lunged out of the car, and ran straight into the shop. Chester and Milford exchanged a bewildered glance before following him inside.Behind the glass of the counter, my pendant rested in silence. Because a decade had passed, its golden sheen had grown dull and tarnished, and its edges bore a collection of shallow, faded scratches. But the three men recognized it instantly—the gift they had given me when I was ten. That was the very year my diagnosis was first confirmed, leaving me in such excruciating agony th
