LOGINArcher sprinted down the hall, trying to follow the trail of string only he could see. He had to duck and weave around the other residents of the pack house, some shouting curses after him, others hardly being phased as a young werewolf skidded through their legs.
The string was leading Archer out the back of the pack house and toward the thick coniferous treeline that separated them from the icy peaks of the Draconic Ridge Head section of the mountains. Archer raced, doing his best not to skid down the icy path of mud and dying leaves.
He had to find them.
Sniffing the air, he could smell something, even without his wolf being awakened yet. It was warm, like vanilla or cinnamon. His eyes watered from the cold and the churning emotions in his chest.
“This way…” a soft voice whispered in his mind. He swallowed hard, trying desperately to follow the voice.
In the central clearing, in a large sunbeam, sat a large white wolf with pale grey agouti markings. She sat resting, her head on her front legs, her eyes closed. Archer stayed at the treeline, his eyes wide. The wolf opened one eye, and in his mind, he could feel they were smiling at him.
“You ran all that way?” she asked in a soft, feminine voice. Archer nodded, suddenly aware that he was breathless.
“Come here,” the wolf said. He walked over, tentatively.
“You… You’re beautiful,” he whispered.
“Thank you,” she replied.
“What’s your name?” he asked.
“Song,” she said.
“And… Your human?” he asked, his heart racing.
“... You’ll meet her later,” Song said.
“Is she nice?” he asked.
“Very nice,” she replied. “But I don’t think she likes you all that much yet.”
“Yet,” Archer said, taking a steadying breath. “I can… I can make her like me.”
“You can’t 'make' anyone do anything,” Song chuckled.
“But she’s my mate…” Archer pouted.
“A mate bond will only go so far,” Song said.
“... But…” Archer hesitated. “You like me, right?” he hated how desperate he sounded.
Song nuzzled her large snout against his cheek, making him giggle and smile. He gently petted her cheeks and head.
“I like you very much,” Song murmured.
Archer’s chest ached, and his eyes burned with tears.
“You’re a very sweet boy, and I can feel you’ve been through much too much in your little life…”
That was it. Archer collapsed into Song and clung to her, sobbing. His lungs and eyes burned with tears that he finally let himself pour out. Song nuzzled him so he was curled in her paws and clinging to the fur on her chest and shoulders. She held him there, letting him cry and sob into her. He could feel her almost treating him like a pup. He didn’t mind.
Eventually, he sobbed himself to sleep in her paws, clinging to her.
He only woke up when the cold started nipping at his skin. Opening his eyes, they were bleary, making the twilight sky look like a soft watercolour.
He sat up, desperately looking around for his mate.
“...No…” he whispered as he suddenly faced her.
Dark curly hair.
Green eyes.
Her slight form was wrapped in a blanket.
He let out a choked sound as the psychic link opened. He could feel her pain, her fear, her anger, and so much more he didn’t know how to name.
Drowning.
He was drowning in her feelings.
How was anyone supposed to be prepared for this?
“A… Ariadne?” he whispered.
He looked at her face, blinking away the sleep. She was sobbing, her cheeks and nose red from the cold.
How had he never seen how beautiful she was?
“A-Ari-”
“Don’t!” she shouted, taking a step back. He scrambled to his feet.
“You’re freezing,” he said softly. “A-and… Your leg… Did you trip or?”
“I said don’t come any closer!” she shouted, taking another step back. He felt pain shoot through her foot as she stepped on a stone.
“No, your foot, you need-”
She screamed so loudly that birds flew from distant trees.
Archer fell backward onto his ass, terrified for her, not sure how to help.
He should have walked away, given her space, gone to find help.
Instead, with Ariadne afraid… They both stayed frozen in the freezing forest until adults arrived.

“Oh… Wow…” Peggy said as she listened to Eli explain it all.
“Yeah,” they nodded. “You can see why Ariadne maybe isn’t a fan of Archer.”
“I guess so,” Peggy said. “I always thought the mate bond was like this inescapable, all-consuming thing, but…”
Eli shook their head.
“It makes things a lot easier, but it doesn’t make it a sure-fire thing,” Eli explained.
“And if your mate is a human or something that makes it even more complicated,” Mikael added.
“Oh, yikes…” Peggy said, looking at them both. “I never thought about all this.”
“Most humans like you don’t need to,” Eli shrugged. “But, Archer has had a lot of time to think on it.”
“I guess,” Peggy nodded. “So… Where is Ariadne now?”

For a moment, she saw her life flashing before her.All those missed lessons. The time she spent with Aurellia. The sensations she felt while touching Mikael…And then…She ducked down and rolled off of the runes on the ground. Her back slammed into the base of one of the pews behind her, and she let out a groan.“Clever little human,” the thing stood

She swallowed hard and forced herself to keep some modicum of calm.Fear would kill her.Panic would kill her. What wouldn’t kill her?She glanced around the room. She couldn’t actually be sure about the answer to that question.“... Fuck it,” she whispered and opened the mind link to Mikael.“Peggy? What the fuck is happening?” Mikael asked.“Get Eli in the mind link thing,” Peggy replied.“Wha-”“There are runes on the floor,” she replied. “You saw the stuff I saw in my head, that came up because I stepped on some runes on the floor. Eli knows magic stuff, right?”“... Yeah, they do…” Mikael said, and she could feel him starting to realise that she knew things. “Peggy, the mind link-”“I know,” she replied. “We can talk about it later, when I’m not in danger.”“... You’re righ
“This was the monastery?” Mikael asked. “The hell happened to it? I swear Alpha Claymore got a letter from them just before we left.” “He did,” Eli confirmed. “So what…” Mikael said, stepping forward. He immediately stepped back, and Peggy felt the wave of nausea surge through him. “The hell?” “Are you ok?” Peggy asked, looking worried. “I’m ok, I just, give me a minute,” Mikael said, beads of sweat forming on his forehead, his face ashen. “Nieve must have pressed on, past this point, to get that sick…” Eli said, watching Mikael’s reaction. “Think this is magic or poison?” Peggy asked, still keeping an eye on Mikael. “My guess? Both. It only seems to be when we cross a certain threshold, and it’s a strong, possibly emetic effect,” Eli said. “It’s bullshit, whatever it is,” Mikael growled. “Let me try…” Peggy said, stepping over where Mikael had been. “Wait-” he said, reaching out… But Peggy was fine. She glanced around, waiting for any effect. “Nothing…” she murmured. “So
Peggy stirred slightly as she awoke. She hadn’t had any strange dreams, which was a relief, as after the rogue attack and with the possibility of having a mate bond with Mikael, she hadn’t slept as well as she would have liked to. Usually, at this point, she would pull up her blanket and cuddle into it, enjoying the warmth before she had to go out into the cold. The further north the group went and the closer toward the werewolf countries of Arcterra they got, the colder the air got. She was used to the more mild days of Albiontё.But today, she was already very warm.Too warm. She blushed hard as she felt a soft breath against her ear. The smell of chewed mint and pine let her know immediately who this was.Mikael.As she came more into reality, she realised that he had his arm wrapped around her middle, his legs pressed against hers.He probably hadn’t gotten into this position on purpose, but still, it made her flustered. His back was pressed against her, and she could feel every l

She used her hairpins to mark areas on the map. Each sharp pin was the location of a reported rogue attack.Something wasn’t adding up.“You’re going to make your milk taste sour if you keep feeding him while you’re stressed,” Song cooed.“You know that’s just an old wives' tale,” Ariadne said, her fingers tapping out the staccato rhythm.“You haven’t even noticed he’s finished drinking,” Song chuckled. Ariadne glanced down at North. He gurgled and wriggled, no longer latched. She smiled, picked him up, and started patting his back to burp him.“It can’t be that sour if he’s happily guzzled down his meal,” Ariadne said.“I still don’t think you should be working while you feed him,” Song said.“Then I’d never get
“Has someone been hurt?” Ariadne asked, frowning.“Half the knighthood,” Commander Ruiz sighed. “A local holy site was attacked.”“Oh my,” Ariadne said, her eyes widening.“Indeed,” Commander Ruiz nodded. “We went to investigate, and we found the cause.”He led her inside the garrison, where the knights were being patched up. She noticed them all eyeing her warily as she walked in. She almost kicked a dagger that had been left on the floor. She frowned at it. The knights had evidently been in a rush… There were other discarded weapons, like a bow and a shield. Then Ariadne’s nostrils burned with the smell of blood and…Turpentine.“A rogue?” Ariadne asked. Several men looked up at her, eyes wide. “This far south?”“Aye,” Commander Ruiz sighed. “We don’t know how-”“Your majesty,” a younger lycan knight spoke. Commander Ruiz glared at the knight. “You know of these things?”“Yes,” Ariadne nodded. “I suppose they aren’t something most Lycans are exposed to.”“That’s right,” Commander Ru
