In the dim light of the forest, she could just make out a reddish wolf. It was more slender than Nieve, with a distinctive black tail. It was standing incredibly still, its deep brown eyes focused on something. Nieve crept forward, his hackles raised. Nieve then looked back at Eli and Peggy. She could feel Eli tensing next to her. Their unease made her heart race, and she didn't understand why.
“Another one?” Eli whispered. Nieve nodded.
"Another what?" Peggy whispered to them.
"A... Another..." Eli looked at Peggy, afraid. "A big one."
"Eli just tell me-"
Suddenly, the sound of birds flying away in a panic and small creatures scattering filled the air. The ground seemed to shake somewhat as something moved through the forest.
A shot of fear spread up Peggy’s spine as the smell of turpentine drifted out of the trees.
EEEEEUUUUUGGH
Something inhuman-sounding cried out from deeper into the trees. Peggy tried to look for it but the thick treeline made it difficult for her to see anything. Her human eyes were attuned to see movement, to handle chasing after small prey for miles and miles. The persistence hunter wasn't used to being hunted.
Suddenly, a large, bony hand reached for one of the tops of the trees. The skin was black with a green oil-slick-like hue.
It was too big.
“Nope, nope, nopity nope, let’s go,” Eli said, grabbing Peggy by the arm and jogging up the path toward a hill.
“What is it?” Peggy asked.
“Another rogue, but this one is way worse,” Eli explained.
“They can get worse?!” she gasped as they raced up the hill.
“Oh yeah,” Eli said. “And you’re about to see it if Nieve and Yonus don’t lead it away.”
“We’re just leaving them back there?!” Peggy cried, looking behind her and skidding to a halt.
“They’re big boys, they know what they’re doing,” Eli said as they stopped running, too.
“We have to go back. We have to-”
Thump

Thump
Peggy’s eyes widened in horror as she saw the shape shambling out of the trees.
Thin, spindling limbs with desiccated skin clinging to bone and sinew. Dark, thick, rot seeped down its body, falling in rivulets down onto the floor. Goo dripped down its cheeks from empty eye sockets; its skull was partially exposed to fresh air. Peggy desperately searched its form for something recognisable. Instead, she saw a hole in its skull. Something crawled in there. She tried to take it all in, but even up the hill, her neck couldn’t accommodate the angle she had to move it at. Its bones cracked and twisted in unnatural ways, as if the werewolf it used to be were still mid-shift into a wolf form…
Her eyes watered from the smell, her heart racing as she desperately tried to understand what she was seeing. Her brain wanted to tell her it was fake, that this was all a trick, that any moment now she would wake up again and eat eggs again and-
“Peggy, breathe,” Eli whispered.
“Wh-” Peggy turned to face them.
“You can’t run if you don’t breathe,” Eli said, their eyes wide.
Eli was afraid, too. They were right, though.
A freeze response could get them killed right now.
Peggy nodded and took a shuddering breath.
EEEEUUUGHGHG
The rogue cried out. Peggy looked at it and saw Nieve and Yonus attacking it. They looked like flies bothering a horse more than apex predators taking on prey. Yonus tried to bite through its rotting leg, but his jaw didn’t quite have the strength to break through the thickened bone. There was no muscle or sinew for him to hold onto, either, and the rot sloughed off without any resistance. Nieve lept at the creature. The rogue swatted him from the air. Nieve landed hard, letting out a yelp of pain. The rogue leaned down to try and bite him, but Yonus tackled Nieve out of the way.
As the creature stood again, the back of its head sloughed off, revealing a cavity where the brain had once been. Engorged centipedes and maggots skittered out.
That was too much for Peggy. She turned away and vomited her breakfast onto the grass. Egg didn't seem as appealing anymore. She coughed and spluttered, getting the last of the bile from her throat.
"We need to go," Eli said as they grabbed her arm and started sprinting up the path.
Peggy heard the crack of bones and looked over her shoulder. The rogue's skull had flipped 180 degrees, so its empty eye sockets were facing Peggy and Eli.
Peggy froze, her mind screamed at her body to move, but she just…
Couldn’t…
“Peggy!”

For a moment, she saw her life flashing before her.All those missed lessons. The time she spent with Aurellia. The sensations she felt while touching Mikael…And then…She ducked down and rolled off of the runes on the ground. Her back slammed into the base of one of the pews behind her, and she let out a groan.“Clever little human,” the thing stood

She swallowed hard and forced herself to keep some modicum of calm.Fear would kill her.Panic would kill her. What wouldn’t kill her?She glanced around the room. She couldn’t actually be sure about the answer to that question.“... Fuck it,” she whispered and opened the mind link to Mikael.“Peggy? What the fuck is happening?” Mikael asked.“Get Eli in the mind link thing,” Peggy replied.“Wha-”“There are runes on the floor,” she replied. “You saw the stuff I saw in my head, that came up because I stepped on some runes on the floor. Eli knows magic stuff, right?”“... Yeah, they do…” Mikael said, and she could feel him starting to realise that she knew things. “Peggy, the mind link-”“I know,” she replied. “We can talk about it later, when I’m not in danger.”“... You’re righ
“This was the monastery?” Mikael asked. “The hell happened to it? I swear Alpha Claymore got a letter from them just before we left.” “He did,” Eli confirmed. “So what…” Mikael said, stepping forward. He immediately stepped back, and Peggy felt the wave of nausea surge through him. “The hell?” “Are you ok?” Peggy asked, looking worried. “I’m ok, I just, give me a minute,” Mikael said, beads of sweat forming on his forehead, his face ashen. “Nieve must have pressed on, past this point, to get that sick…” Eli said, watching Mikael’s reaction. “Think this is magic or poison?” Peggy asked, still keeping an eye on Mikael. “My guess? Both. It only seems to be when we cross a certain threshold, and it’s a strong, possibly emetic effect,” Eli said. “It’s bullshit, whatever it is,” Mikael growled. “Let me try…” Peggy said, stepping over where Mikael had been. “Wait-” he said, reaching out… But Peggy was fine. She glanced around, waiting for any effect. “Nothing…” she murmured. “So
Peggy stirred slightly as she awoke. She hadn’t had any strange dreams, which was a relief, as after the rogue attack and with the possibility of having a mate bond with Mikael, she hadn’t slept as well as she would have liked to. Usually, at this point, she would pull up her blanket and cuddle into it, enjoying the warmth before she had to go out into the cold. The further north the group went and the closer toward the werewolf countries of Arcterra they got, the colder the air got. She was used to the more mild days of Albiontё.But today, she was already very warm.Too warm. She blushed hard as she felt a soft breath against her ear. The smell of chewed mint and pine let her know immediately who this was.Mikael.As she came more into reality, she realised that he had his arm wrapped around her middle, his legs pressed against hers.He probably hadn’t gotten into this position on purpose, but still, it made her flustered. His back was pressed against her, and she could feel every l

She used her hairpins to mark areas on the map. Each sharp pin was the location of a reported rogue attack.Something wasn’t adding up.“You’re going to make your milk taste sour if you keep feeding him while you’re stressed,” Song cooed.“You know that’s just an old wives' tale,” Ariadne said, her fingers tapping out the staccato rhythm.“You haven’t even noticed he’s finished drinking,” Song chuckled. Ariadne glanced down at North. He gurgled and wriggled, no longer latched. She smiled, picked him up, and started patting his back to burp him.“It can’t be that sour if he’s happily guzzled down his meal,” Ariadne said.“I still don’t think you should be working while you feed him,” Song said.“Then I’d never get
“Has someone been hurt?” Ariadne asked, frowning.“Half the knighthood,” Commander Ruiz sighed. “A local holy site was attacked.”“Oh my,” Ariadne said, her eyes widening.“Indeed,” Commander Ruiz nodded. “We went to investigate, and we found the cause.”He led her inside the garrison, where the knights were being patched up. She noticed them all eyeing her warily as she walked in. She almost kicked a dagger that had been left on the floor. She frowned at it. The knights had evidently been in a rush… There were other discarded weapons, like a bow and a shield. Then Ariadne’s nostrils burned with the smell of blood and…Turpentine.“A rogue?” Ariadne asked. Several men looked up at her, eyes wide. “This far south?”“Aye,” Commander Ruiz sighed. “We don’t know how-”“Your majesty,” a younger lycan knight spoke. Commander Ruiz glared at the knight. “You know of these things?”“Yes,” Ariadne nodded. “I suppose they aren’t something most Lycans are exposed to.”“That’s right,” Commander Ru
