Chapter 47:

“Again!” Kael’s voice booms, cutting cleanly across the vast training field like the snap of a banner in a gale.

I groan, the sound pathetic and utterly defeated, and drag myself to my feet, wiping a thick stripe of sweat and dirt off my forehead with the back of my arm.

My legs feel like they’ve been replaced by warm jelly, my arms like lead weights, and my pride? Dead, crushed, and thoroughly buried somewhere beneath the dirt I’ve been eating for the past hour of relentless, brutal sparring.

Kael stands opposite me, completely, infuriatingly unruffled. Not a single drop of sweat glistens on his skin, and not a single strand of his molten-gold hair is out of place.

His dark, fitted training shirt clings to his perfect body, but not because he’s exerted himself—it clings because the bastard looks like he was sculpted out of sheer, unyielding arrogance.

I charge. I know I should be thinking, but instinct takes over, fueled by pure frustration. I aim a clumsy high kick.

He sidesteps

Zeke’s voice is calm but firm as he speaks quietly with the chief enforcer, delivering the first piece of controlled, false intelligence for our trap, yet my attention drifts elsewhere entirely. My eyes, now sensitized by the training and the sudden awakening, follow the subtle, involuntary movements in the room—the rapid flick of a nervous wrist, the unconscious twitch of a mouth, the minute, hidden shift in energy and aura as the enforcers receive their orders. Erica stands a few feet away, meticulously pretending to be sorting through a stack of irrelevant duty rosters, but her ears are clearly perked, her attention quietly, desperately tethered to every single one of Zeke’s low words. She reacts before her trained mind realizes she’s reacting—her eyes flinch, her shoulders tense, and her breathing deepens ever so slightly each time Zeke mentions a strategic location or a name she shouldn’t be focusing on. "You see that, don’t you?" Isla hums softly inside my mind, her voice

I sink against Zeke’s chest, boneless and wonderfully warm. Every muscle in my body feels like it’s been set on fire and then cooled with ice, but for once, it’s a sweet, delicious burn. Kael’s relentless training nearly killed me, pushing me to a point of exhaustion I didn’t know existed, and yet… I’ve never felt more profoundly, electrically alive.Zeke’s powerful arms tighten immediately around me, effortlessly carrying my weight as he strides through the quiet hallway. His steady, comforting heartbeat thrums a soothing rhythm against my ear, and his familiar scent wraps around me like an immediate sense of home.My chest warms and it carries through to the bond.“You’re warm,” he murmurs, his voice soft with amusement and relief. “What’s this? Did my terrifying, emotionally stunted mate finally miss me and realize I’m the softest blanket in the pack?”I want to roll my eyes, to throw a snarky, cutting reply at him like I always do, maintaining my defensive wall, but the words do

  • The Wolf's Call (Book 1)   Chapter 46: Olivia's POV

I don’t stop walking until I’m completely out of the Library, closing the heavy, carved oak door behind me with a gentle click. My heart’s a mess. Wild. Erratic. My lips are still tingling from my unexpected kiss, and I feel disgustingly, embarrassingly giddy. It’s the kind of juvenile, swirling excitement I haven't felt since I was sixteen and convinced a boy in my class liked me.What the hell just came over me?One second I was staring at his tattoos light up, the golden glow of the containment seals humming with the sound of his suppressed anger, and the next I was launching myself across the table, kissing him like my life—and his sanity—depended on it. And it wasn’t some spur-of-the-moment pity thing, or me putting to practice what Roman had said. No. I wanted to kiss him. I needed to. The moment I touched his lips, the noise inside my own head—the fear, the frustration, the anger at his distance—all went silent too.But if I’d stayed in there a second longer, letting him pul

  • The Wolf's Call (Book 1)   Chapter 45: Zeke's POV

The voices are back. They’re never truly gone, but right now, they’re silent whispering, insidious and cold, like the sound of water dripping onto stone in a vast, dark cave.Failure.Weak.Kill yourself and take half the world with you.You deserve the end.I clutch the steering wheel of my jeep, grinding my teeth against the sound, the pressure building behind my eyes. I can feel the faint glow beneath my skin, the seals humming like they have a mind of their own, straining against the chaos in my mind.“Oh, no, you don’t,” I mutter, slamming on the brakes and pulling off the dirt road. The jeep shudders to a stop in a small, sheltered valley.I throw the door open and stride into the damp morning air. The valley is filled with tall grass and wild patches of colour. A ridiculous idea pops into my head, a desperate attempt to silence the demons with sheer absurdity.I clear my throat, take a deep breath, and belt out the most ridiculously upbeat, ultimately nonsensical pop song I ca

The heavy, concrete training ball slams into my palms with a brutal force that nearly knocks me over backward. I grunt, my knees dipping sharply as I struggle to keep my balance, the rough surface grating against my skin. My arms ache, my shoulders scream with protesting strain, and the earth feels like it’s spinning beneath my feet, dizzyingly fast.“Again,” Roman orders, his voice utterly devoid of sympathy from a few feet away. He stands there, massive and completely composed, radiating a stern patience.I glare at him, my breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. “You are absolutely enjoying this, aren’t you? This is torture, Roman.”He smirks, the look of innocent amusement in his grey eyes making me want to throw the ball at his head instead of his hands. “A little. It’s excellent cardio, and it teaches you foundational core stability. Now, focus.”This is what I signed up for, is it not? Who thought that trying to prove myself worthy would include getting near death experienc
