Chapter 52:

Kael’s sitting cross-legged on the floor like some ancient, annoyingly placid monk, eyes closed, his back impossibly straight, breathing slow and even.

The only sounds in the small, candlelit room are the soft rush of the fire and the rhythmic, steady hush of his exhales.

I narrow my eyes at him, the frustration building to a painful knot in my stomach.

He peeks open a single eyelid, catches my venomous glare, and sighs dramatically, the sound vibrating the calm air.

He sighs like I’m the single greatest disappointment in his entire royal lineage. Which, to be perfectly fair, I probably am.

“You’re not even trying, Olivia,” he mutters, his voice low and utterly bored.

“I am trying,” I shoot back, my voice tight with defensive anger, sitting rigidly with my legs folded into the most painful, awkward angle known to humankind. “It’s just that you look like you’ve been professionally Photoshopped into a ridiculously expensive yoga commercial, and it’s distracting.”

He opens both eyes f

Roman’s palms slam against the heavy oak table so hard that the maps, historical scrolls, and strategic papers scatter violently across the polished floor.“Damn it all to hell!”The curse rips from his throat, raw, furious, and utterly defeated. His hand rakes roughly through his dark, grizzled hair, and for the first time since I’ve known him, I see the powerful Beta of Silver Lake—my grandfather—completely lose his composure, the mask of unshakable calm and control dissolving.I don’t move. None of us do. We are three silent statues in the face of his volcanic frustration.Kael is standing near the window, a dark silhouette against the light, arms crossed, his jaw set tight as iron. Zeke leans back slightly in his large leather chair, eyes darting between Roman and Kael, clearly calculating the precise second he should intervene to prevent a full-scale argument. The air in the room feels too thick, too compressed with failure to breathe easily.Roman exhales, a long, shuddering so

“He knows.”The words leave my mouth, a stark, flat whisper that seems to shatter the fragile quiet of the study. The room goes instantly still—eerily quiet. Kael’s jaw flexes, a visible muscle jumping beneath the skin. Zeke’s brow creases deeply in concentrated worry, and Roman’s sharp gaze fixes on me with concern so profound it almost feels like tangible guilt that he couldn't prevent this intrusion. The fire crackles softly in the hearth behind Roman, but even that comforting sound feels distant, muffled by the sheer weight of Malakai’s omnipresence.“How?” Kael demands, pushing away from the desk to pace across the thick rug. His heavy boots thud against the floorboards like a ticking clock, counting down the time until Malakai makes his next move. “How the hell could he possibly know? We covered every single detail! We separated the information into three clean, completely isolated silos. Every step was executed perfectly.”I shake my head slowly, still processing the sheer aud

Zeke's hands feverishly move around my body, caressing each spot until they become sore...in a good way.He scoops me up from under my thighs, and my legs automatically wrap around his waist, holding myself firm in place. He moves us to his bed, and I sink into the soft mattress and his weight pulls me even deeper into the foam as he leans over me.He breaks the kiss and stops for a second, looking down at me like he's suddenly not sure of what's happening. His tears have stopped flowing now, though his lashes are still wet from them.I reach for his neck, rubbing his hot skin lightly. "This is not the bond," I tell him, biting my lip. "This is me and my sane mind."His smile in this moment is as bright as his room as he leans into me again, his hands continuing their exploration through my body. "I never thought you'd ever want to... without the influence of it," he whispers, as his lips trace down my body.I slowly pull my shirt over my head, pushing myself up just enough for him t

Zeke’s voice is calm but firm as he speaks quietly with the chief enforcer, delivering the first piece of controlled, false intelligence for our trap, yet my attention drifts elsewhere entirely. My eyes, now sensitized by the training and the sudden awakening, follow the subtle, involuntary movements in the room—the rapid flick of a nervous wrist, the unconscious twitch of a mouth, the minute, hidden shift in energy and aura as the enforcers receive their orders. Erica stands a few feet away, meticulously pretending to be sorting through a stack of irrelevant duty rosters, but her ears are clearly perked, her attention quietly, desperately tethered to every single one of Zeke’s low words. She reacts before her trained mind realizes she’s reacting—her eyes flinch, her shoulders tense, and her breathing deepens ever so slightly each time Zeke mentions a strategic location or a name she shouldn’t be focusing on. "You see that, don’t you?" Isla hums softly inside my mind, her voice

I sink against Zeke’s chest, boneless and wonderfully warm. Every muscle in my body feels like it’s been set on fire and then cooled with ice, but for once, it’s a sweet, delicious burn. Kael’s relentless training nearly killed me, pushing me to a point of exhaustion I didn’t know existed, and yet… I’ve never felt more profoundly, electrically alive.Zeke’s powerful arms tighten immediately around me, effortlessly carrying my weight as he strides through the quiet hallway. His steady, comforting heartbeat thrums a soothing rhythm against my ear, and his familiar scent wraps around me like an immediate sense of home.My chest warms and it carries through to the bond.“You’re warm,” he murmurs, his voice soft with amusement and relief. “What’s this? Did my terrifying, emotionally stunted mate finally miss me and realize I’m the softest blanket in the pack?”I want to roll my eyes, to throw a snarky, cutting reply at him like I always do, maintaining my defensive wall, but the words do
