I sat in my car outside Mira’s precinct for ten minutes, gripping the wheel like it was the only thing anchoring me to reality. My ears rang. My mouth was dry. My mind? A straight line of fire. I didn’t hear my phone buzz. Didn’t hear the officer knocking on the window.

But I heard the click of the safety on the gun inside my purse.
