LOGINLamia Blackmoor POV
“He is on one knee,” I whisper.
My eyes stay on the heavy ring. Clay is down on the floor in front of me, and his dark eyes are looking right at my face. I cannot get any air into my chest.
When Rham asked to form our covenant, it was different. It was like a big play for the whole pack to watch at Shadowclaw Citadel. There were hundreds of wolves in beautiful furs under the full moon. Rham made a proud speech. He called me to the front, dropped down, and gave me the stone.
It was just a pack duty, a big show. When he put the silver band on my finger and gave me a fast, cold kiss on my lips, I felt like I was flying high above the trees. I was just watching another girl. I was not really there.
But right now, looking at the big moonstone and the serious look on Clay's sharp face, I feel everything. The fire is popping in the hearth of the Pack Grove Manor. Our breathing is loud in the quiet room. I am right here.
But I have to remember that this proposal is a trick, too. It is just a different kind of show.
“Do not be stupid, Clay,” I say. I pull my hand away from his strong fingers. I push my chair back so I can stand up and get away from him.
My brain is shaking from what Rham did yesterday. I cannot believe he ran away to the Shadowfang Wilds. I cannot believe I lost my temper and screamed like a wild animal in my bedroom. I feel like thin ice today. One wrong step and I will break into pieces. A fake proposal from the dangerous, rogue prince will not fix my life.
Clay stays on his knee, perfectly steady. He looks like a giant, powerful wall that cannot be moved. “I am not being stupid, Lamia. It is a great plan. It is smart.”
“It is crazy,” I spit out. My voice is sharp because I am so scared. “The Grand Wolf Assembly will tear me apart. They will say I got dumped by one Jasperfang brother and picked up by the wild one like a piece of leftover meat.”
The hot shame burns my skin again. Waves of heat go from my neck to my face.
“Besides,” I say, looking down at his broad, muscular frame, “nobody will believe you want to settle down with one Luna. You sleep with every female wolf from here to the Silver River District. You are the biggest playboy in the whole Moonshadow Dominion.”
I feel bad as soon as the words come out of my mouth. But Clay just smiles a little bit, his dark eyes flashing with a wicked light. He does not get mad. He holds the ring higher.
“That is not true,” Clay says. His voice gets very deep and warm, sliding over my skin like silk. “Everyone in the territory knows I always wanted you, Lamia. I never hid it.”
He reaches out and puts his large, heavy hand on my thigh. His skin is very hot through my deer-hide pants. He looks down at my body and then back up to my eyes. His look is bold. It feels like a dangerous dare.
“I would be very happy to put my mark on you,” he whispers.
I have to tell myself that this is just what Clay does. He is very good at using his words and his intense eyes to get female wolves into his bed. He makes people believe him in the moment, and that makes him dangerous. He is a predator.
“There is a big difference between wanting a female wolf and making her your Luna,” I say, trying to keep my heart safe.
“Very true,” he says, and a slow, lethal grin cuts across his face. “But it is a good start. And it is much more than you ever had with my brother.”
I do not say anything back to that. He is right, and it hurts.
“A lot of girls would run to the altar for me,” Clay says. He lifts one dark eyebrow, looking incredibly handsome and full of trouble. “Especially now. You are looking at the new future Alpha King of the Jasperfang Pack.”
My mouth drops open. I cannot stop it. Rham told me King Aldric cut him off, but I thought the title might go to their mean cousin, Victor Ravenshadow.
Clay is the High Alpha Lord of the Silvercrest Territory.
I never, ever thought that could happen.
“Now you are listening,” he teases me. His voice sounds like thick honey. “Suddenly, the bad-boy brother looks a lot better, right? What do you say, Lamia? You never wanted Rham. You wanted the Silverclaw Throne. Well, now you get the throne, and you get me. I told you. It is a smart plan.”
A cold feeling hits my stomach like sour mountain water. “So that is the trick. Your father will not give you the Alpha power unless you keep the royal alliance with my pack.”
Clay lets out a low breath and stands up in one smooth, powerful motion. He is so tall and broad that he blocks out the warmth of the fire. His dark aura presses heavily against me. “Standing on stone floors takes a while. Come here.”
Before I can move away, Clay grabs my waist with his strong hands. He pulls me right against his hard, muscular chest. He sits down heavily in my big armchair, pulling me directly onto his lap. His arm is like a thick iron bar behind my back, holding me tight. My legs are draped over his massive, solid thighs.
This is bad. This is very bad.
He takes a slow breath and relaxes, a dangerous smile playing on his lips. “That is better, future Luna. We need to get used to being close like this, don't we?”
“I am not your Luna,” I say, trying to push against his broad chest. It feels like pushing against a solid mountain of muscle. “Answer my question, Clay.”
He lets out a loud, booming laugh that vibrates right through my own body. “Wow, you are tough. Okay, you are a little bit right. King Aldric wants to see this wedding happen before his spirit leaves his body. But he hates Victor Ravenshadow, and he will never forgive Rham for running away from his duty. Even if I stay single, I will still take the throne. I did not break the pack law.”
My feet swung over the edge of the mattress again, determined to stand, but Sterling strode across the rug in two massive steps. His big hands clamped around my ankles, lifting my legs and swinging them back onto the bed. His fingers lingered against my warm skin for a second longer than necessary, sending an electric shock straight through my pulse points. We froze, staring at each other. My eyes burned with pure hatred; his returned the glare with absolute coldness.Slowly, Sterling straightened to his full, towering height, tweaking one dark eyebrow up. "Going somewhere, Maisie?""I am not staying under the same roof as a tyrant who is determined to blame me for an accident I didn't cause!" I held his intense grey gaze, something raw and desperate forcing the words out of my chest. "Please... just tell me you believe me! I wasn't driving!"Sterling studied my face for a long, agonizing moment. His dark eyes slowly drifted down my neck, lingering on the heavy curve of my chest benea
"If I told you that no male wolf has ever touched me, that I built an iron fortress around my heart the day my family cast me out, would you even believe me?" I rasped, my vocal cords burning as I glared up at the massive Alpha standing beside my bed. "Or would you just call me a liar again?"Sterling raised one dark, imperious eyebrow, his broad shoulders blocking out the sunlight streaming through the arched windows of the Whitaker River Estate. "A broke outcast with nothing to her name? Anyone in your position looks ragged and starving. Tell me, Maisie, before you turned up floating in my river like abandoned baggage, how exactly did you survive?""I worked fifty hours a week at Mercer Electrical Works," I snapped, the memory of the grease, wire coils, and heavy iron parts making my knuckles ache. "I lifted crates, fixed power lines, and kept Alwyn Mercer's machinery running until he retired and shuttered the shop without warning. Then my brother decided my small room at Harcourt C
"A high-ranking female who could have provided a stabilizing influence," Sterling continued, his voice dripping with dark irony as he stared down at my pale, bruised face. "How Everett would have hated the solid, unexciting omega you are trying to pretend to be!""That 'unexciting omega' would have forced him to hand over the keys when he was drenched in fire-whisky, thereby keeping him alive!" I snapped back."Are you attempting to make me feel guilty for my brother's grave?" he asked, his grey eyes turning to ice."He was the one driving the vehicle," I said, my chest heaving as pain shot through my ribs. "Are you honestly blaming me for the crash?""I saw you behind the wheel with my own eyes when you both left the Whitaker Grand Ballroom," Sterling replied coldly."We pulled over and swapped seats five minutes after leaving the pack gates!" My hands clenched into the heavy duvet. "Everett demanded to drive. Why are you shaking your head? I swear on my honor we traded places!""The
Voices drifted up from the lower courtyard right beneath my window."Sterling, this vessel is an absolute wreck!" a male voice shouted, followed by the heavy thud of boots on timber. "Whoever was navigating this floating coffin is lucky they didn't end up crushed against the rocks.""Replace 'he' with 'she', Baxter," Sterling answered from the dock below, his voice dry and devoid of pity. "She calls her craft the Moon Lady. Though she prefers to describe herself in even less flattering terms. 'Stray river trash', I believe, was her term of choice."My body went completely rigid under the sheets."You're joking," Baxter Hensley laughed, his voice echoing off the stone wall. "A lone female living in a breakdown like this? Some wild rogue type? Free with her favors, is she? Is that why you brought her inside the house?"A sharp blush flooded my pale, feverish cheeks. I clenched my fists, my claws aching to extend."A wild rogue?" Sterling’s voice carried a dark, sardonic edge. "Hardly. A
"Your ribs completely mended three years back, I take it?" Dr. Bevan asked, rising from his chair and snapping his medical kit shut.I nodded once, my jaw tight. "And the shoulder. It was just a deep dislocation then.""Well, this recent river incident has severely bruised the exact same ribcage, but time will repair the bone, just as it will clear the throat infection," Dr. Bevan said, pulling a prescription pad from his jacket. "You require absolute bed rest. That is the single effective treatment right now. I am prescribing an antibiotic for the fever, but you must remain immobile for forty-eight hours minimum. Do you hear me, Maisie?"Maribel stepped back into the room as the heavy oak door clicked open. Dr. Bevan scribbled a swift line of script across the paper and passed it straight to the housekeeper."She understands the necessity of total rest, Doctor," Alpha Sterling Whitaker’s deep voice echoed from the doorway. He stepped inside, his broad shoulders easily blocking out th
"On the boat," I whispered, forcing myself to look up into his striking, sharp-jawed face. "I told you that on the dock.""You also told me you were river trash and a useless omega," he noted, his dark eyes narrowing as he studied my features. "I didn't believe that either.""I am unemployed," I snapped, a flash of defensive heat cutting through my weakness. "I am homeless, I have no pack, and I have no money left.""And the male you lived with abandoned you?""I never said that!""You said he found someone else," Sterling countered smoothly."Just leave me alone!" I cried out, rolling onto my uninjured side, pulling the heavy comforter over my shoulders to hide from his suffocating presence. The bedroom door clicked open, and Maribel walked back in carrying a basin of steaming water and folded towels. "Alpha Sterling, I need to wash the young lady and change her. Please step outside."Sterling straightened up, his tall, imposing silhouette blocking the warm light of the hallway. He l
