MasukEvelyn’s POV
The next morning, I was in the sitting room, quietly sipping a cup of tea with my eyes all red and puffy from last night’s crying. Charlie sat across from me, dressed in a suit that screamed luxury, even when my clothes were basically rags. He hadn't looked at me once since sitting down, instead focusing on his tablet with a scowl that seemed etched into his handsome features. "I have a gala to attend tonight," he said, his voice reaching me. "Don't bother waiting up. And for heaven’s sake, stay in your room if the press comes by. I don't need your drab face reminding the world of the tragedy you caused." I gripped my cup tighter, swallowing my pain. "I understand, Charlie." "Do you?" He finally looked up, his blue eyes flashing with a familiar, searing hatred. "Because every time I see you breathing, I think about how Serena can't even stand. You’re a parasite, Evelyn. You took her life and stepped into her shoes, but you’ll never fit them." He opened his mouth to deliver another blow, but the sound of the front door swinging open stopped him mid-sentence and we both turned to see who would dare burst in without an invitation. My brows rose as the click of heels reached me. Is he bringing women home now? I wondered as the steps drew closer. A woman stepped into the dining room archway, and for a heartbeat, I thought I was looking into a mirror that only reflected perfection and when my eyes settled on the face, I froze. It was Serena. She stood tall, her posture impossibly perfect as she balanced perfectly on two slender legs that were supposed to be useless. She looked stunning, wearing a glittering dress that made her look almost too good to be real. Her hair, that was an exact relic of mine that was now dull and dirty, flowed in waves over her shoulders and her doll-like green eyes sparkled with a calculated innocence. "Charlie?" she whispered, her voice a practiced distressed tone. Charlie’s tablet fell hard to the ground as he stood up so abruptly, his chair pulled back in a screech. His face was filled with absolute shock. "Serena?" "I’m home, my love," she said, her lips curving into a soft, tearful smile. In an instant, the cold and heartless man I once lived with vanished. Charlie let out a ragged sound that sounded like a sob and laughter at the same time before lunging at her. He caught her in his arms, spinning her around as if she could disappear if he spun her too hard. Then, he buried his face in her neck, his broad shoulders shaking with an excitement I had never been allowed to witness. I couldn’t utter a word as my gaze was fixed on those legs that made literally everyone hate me. They were back to normal like nothing had ever happened. Knowing the type of person Serena was, I knew she was bound to come out one day, but like this? "You’re walking," he choked out, pulling back to cup her face with trembling hands. "Serena, your legs... how? I don't understand." Serena let a single, perfect tear roll down her cheek. She reached up and her fingers grazed his jaw with an affection I knew was fake. "It was a miracle, Charlie. I was so ashamed of being a burden, so broken by what happened, that I had to leave and cut off all points of contact. I went abroad for a highly experimental, specialized treatment. It was grueling, and there were times I thought I wouldn't survive the pain, but the thought of coming back to you... it kept me fighting." She looked over Charlie’s shoulder and our gaze locked. I watched as the innocent look in her face grew cold and was immediately filled with a mischievous look she always gave me when no one was watching. "Evelyn," she breathed, faking a gasp of surprise. "You’re still here? Oh, sister, I hoped you had found your own happiness by now." Charlie turned his head, and the joy in his eyes turned into pure, unadulterated disgust the moment his gaze landed on me. He didn't let go of Serena. In fact, he pulled her closer, shielding her from me as if I were a plague. "She’s here because I forced her to be," Charlie spat, his voice filled with venom. "I made her stay to pay for what she did to you. But looking at you now... seeing you stand..." He looked back at Serena, his eyes shining with a dark, renewed obsession. "It makes her presence feel like a stain on this room and I cannot even stand the sight of her.” "Don't be too hard on her, Charlie," Serena said, her tone dripping with pretentious pity. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear with a practiced movement. "I’m sure she didn't mean to push me that day. I’ve forgiven her, even if my body almost didn't." I felt a wave of nausea roll through me because the lie was so bold and effortless that it made my head spin. She had never been paralyzed. She had vanished for years, letting me rot in this marriage and watching from the shadows while letting him break me piece by piece for a crime that didn't exist, and now she was back to play the saint. A whimper left my lips as I thought of the possibility of my parents having a hand in this. "You were never paralyzed," I whispered, the words finally breaking through the lump in my throat. The room went deathly quiet as Charlie’s gaze grew even more cold. "How dare you," he hissed, taking a step toward me angrily. "She just told you she went through hell for a cure, and your first instinct is to accuse her of lying? You truly are as rotten as they say." "Charlie, it’s okay," Serena interrupted, her voice small and fragile. She moved with a delicate grace as she moved towards him and placed a delicate hand on his chest as if to restrain him. "She’s just shocked and I bet it must be hard for her to see me like this when she worked so hard to keep me down." She looked at me then with a tiny, secret smirk playing at the corners of her mouth that only I could see. "I’m back now, Evelyn. You don't have to pretend to be me anymore. I’ve come home to claim the life you’ve been keeping warm for me."FrankI was not going to lose Serena to this bloody war, not to Charlie, and certainly not to anyone else.I drove away from the house with her words still echoing in my mind. The way she had looked at me when she asked about the child. That particular look she wore whenever she already knew the answer and was simply waiting to see whether I would lie to her. I had lied anyway because what else was I supposed to do? Tell her the truth and watch everything unravel?I needed a drink.I pulled into the first bar I found, pushed through the door, dropped heavily onto a stool, and looked at the man behind the counter."The strongest thing you have."He poured the drink without asking a single question.I finished the first glass faster than I should have and pushed it forward for another. The man beside me glanced over briefly before looking away. I stared at the bottles lined up behind the counter and thought about Serena's face, Julian's dismissiveness, and the particular exhaustion of
SerenaI sat at the dining table with a cookie in my hand, thinking about how clean everything was about to become.Evelyn would be first. Then Charlie would have nowhere left to run.Julian and Frank would be long gone before anyone started asking questions, and I would walk back into my life as though none of this had ever happened.A quiet laugh escaped me as I took another bite of the cookie.Frank must really take me for a fool. If that child truly existed, if Charlie and Evelyn really had a child together, then that pathetic fool had hidden it from me all this time.Charlie would pay for it.And the child...The child would disappear too.The television had been my only company for days.Out of boredom, I switched it on and flipped through the channels until a familiar face stopped me cold.A journalist sat across from two women I recognized immediately.Old friends. The kind who attended charity galas, birthday parties, and apparently television interviews."Who do you think Mr
JulianI came out of Leo's room and saw Evelyn stepping away from the side table where I had left my phone, and my stomach dropped before she even turned around. She was calm, too calm. She looked up when she heard me and smiled, the kind of smile that gave nothing away.“Goodnight Julian.” She walked to her room quietly. I stood in the corridor and watched her door close and then crossed to the side table and picked up my phone. The text was still on the screen.“Everything is ready, we just need her there.”I looked at the preview and at the angle from which she had been standing and did the calculation and felt cold move through me."Damn it," I muttered. But she had said nothing, shown nothing, and I could not tell if that meant she had not seen it or if she had seen it and was doing exactly what I would do in her position, keeping it close and saying nothing and waiting.I did not sleep well. The next morning I came downstairs to find Evelyn already in the kitchen, her hair tied
CharlieI couldn't think straight. Every minute, my mind drifted back to her, wondering where she was, how she was doing, and hoping Julian hadn't laid a hand on her or my son.I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, telling myself to sleep. But sleep never came.Sometime around two in the morning, exhaustion finally pulled me under. The darkness carried me somewhere I never wanted to see again.A room I didn't recognize.Evelyn lay on the floor while Julian stood over her, his hands were wrapped around her throat.I ran toward them, but my legs refused to move. The distance never closed.I screamed her name, “Eveeeeeeeeey!” yet no sound came out.I bolted upright, the room was dark and silent.I dragged both hands over my face and remained there for a long moment."Madam Laura." My voice carried farther than I intended.Within minutes, my housekeeper appeared at the door, tying the belt of her robe."Sir?""Bring me the whiskey," I requested. "The bottle, not a glass."She studied me b
EvelynIt was obvious he hated me.Every look he gave me, every moment of distance, the way he had pulled away when I kissed him as though I had burned him, broke me in ways I couldn't begin to describe. But I wasn't going to give up.I made that decision the morning after the kiss. I lay in my separate room, staring at the ceiling while the house gradually came to life. Leo's laughter drifted down the hallway, where Julian was probably taking him through the morning routine I had always handled. If Julian intended to keep his distance, I would close it without making my intentions obvious. After breakfast, a member of the staff approached me about the week's grocery order."Ms. Hart, what would you like on the menu this week?"I smiled."Ask Mr. Julian. Whatever he decides works for me."She blinked in surprise before nodding and walking off to find him.I watched her leave, keeping my expression perfectly neutral. Did she think I was now the woman of the house?Small things. If Juli
JulianI could tell she was desperate to speak to me. I deliberately acted as though I hadn't noticed, but I saw every attempt because I wanted her to need me.For three days, she had lingered at the edges of every room, finding excuses to walk past wherever I was. She always paused a little too long before turning away whenever I failed to acknowledge her.I made sure to keep my distance.Every morning, I took Leo to breakfast myself. I asked about his dreams, his favorite cartoons, or whatever happened to be on his mind, giving him my full attention while Evelyn sat across the table receiving nothing more than a polite nod."Uncle Julian, do you want to see my drawing?" Leo asked one morning, sliding a sheet of paper across the table."Show me everything," I replied, leaning forward.Evelyn watched us quietly, saying nothing.Neither did I.The separate room had been intentional. The staff had been briefed before she even arrived, and I knew exactly what that small detail would do t
CharlieThe office was the only place that had ever asked nothing of me except results, and that morning I needed that more than I needed anything else.I had not called Serena. I had woken up, showered, dressed and driven straight in without checking my phone beyond the work notifications and I fe

Evelyn’s POVI heaved a shaky breath as I stepped out of the Thorne mansion with shaky legs. Dragging my luggage, I flagged down a passing taxi and as I got in and the car drove away, I kept waiting for a relief that didn't come.Instead of relief, a violent wave of nausea rolled to the back of my
Evelyn’s POVCharlie looked at her with such worship it made my stomach turn. He leaned down and kissed her forehead, his eyes never leaving mine as he adored her right in front of me.“We have a lot to talk about, baby. I need to know all that has happened.” Charlie breathed.“Yes baby, I’ll tell
