Evelyn’s POV

I heaved a deep breath for the nth time as I folded my hands neatly in my lap and stared at the elaborate dinner that had since grown cold.

The dying candles I had lit cast long shadows against the dining walls, but they provided no warmth because in this house, silence was the only thing that felt real. I checked the clock on the wall. It was nearly midnight. This was the rhythm of the third year of my marriage. I was a slave, offered up for Charlie’s grief. Every night, I prepared a meal I knew he wouldn't appreciate, and every night, I waited for the man who viewed my existence as a very curse that I needed to be punished for.

I closed my eyes as my mind traveled back to the night my life truly ended. It was the night my miserable life truly began. Serena, my younger sister, had been gone for forty-eight hours, leaving behind nothing but an empty wheelchair and a house full of people who looked at me with accusing eyes. Charlie, Serena’s fiancé, had burst into my bedroom, drunk and furious with blazing eyes.

"She’s gone because of you," he had roared, his voice cracking with a pain that I had never seen before. He had grabbed my arm, his grip bruising my skin as he dragged me roughly toward the mirror. "Look at yourself, Evelyn. You have her face, her hair, her eyes. But you’re the one who ruined her. You’re the reason she can't walk, and now you’re the reason she’s vanished."

With a cry, I had looked at my parents who were standing by the doorway and begged silently for them to do something, but they only stared back with a cold indifference. They didn't stop him. They didn't tell him that Serena had always been the one to pull the strings. They didn’t tell him how Serena was actually the evil child. They let him force me into a marriage of atonement, a legal binding that was created specifically to break me.

Charlie had leaned close that night, his breath hot against my ear, and promised me that he would make my life a living hell as payment for her legs, the very legs I had been accused of taking but I never did. He had kept that promise every single day since.

Even the nights he managed to make be intimate with me, he would moan Serena’s name while avioding my eyes.

The sound of the front door slamming shut brought my mind back to the present and as I waited for him, I couldn’t help the pounding in my chest.

Charlie stepped into the dining room, looking as breathtakingly handsome as he was cruel. His chestnut hair was disheveled, and his blue eyes were clouded with the familiar anger that always filled them. He didn't look at the food, nor did he look at me. He simply walked to the sideboard and poured himself a glass of scotch, ignoring me totally.

"You’re late," I said, my voice barely a whisper.

Charlie paused, the glass halfway to his lips. Then, he turned slowly and his gaze raked over me like I was an insolent child.

"And yet, here you are. Still waiting and hoping for some delusion," he sneered before taking a long drink of his scotch. "Did you think that wearing your hair down would make me forget who you are? You can try to mimic her beauty all you want, Evelyn, but you will always be the black sheep. The girl who takes and destroys. But Serena has always been the opposite of you and need I remind you that she saved my life?"

I bit my lips hard as I tried to ignore his words. I had always worn my hair down before Serena started copying me, but he didn’t need to know that. "The dinner is cold, but I can heat it up for you, Charlie."

He let out a mocking laugh that strangely didn't have any warmth to it. "Do you truly believe I want anything prepared by your hands? Every time I look at you, I see the accident. I see Serena’s wasted youth and the legs she lost because of your jealousy. You are a constant reminder of everything I’ve lost and I hate you for it."

Seeing my silence, he took a step towards me, invading my personal space.

"You are only in this house because you look like her," he hissed, his eyes boring coldly into mine. "You are a placeholder and that’s what you will always be. You stay here to suffer because that is the only value you have left. Your parents were right about you. You were always the mistake they couldn't fix."

I shivered as his words washed over me while I resisted the urge to scream and tell him the truth. I wanted to tell him about the day at the lake many years ago when we were still kids, when the ice had cracked, and it was my small, frostbitten hands that had hauled him to safety while Serena watched from the shore, too scared to ruin her dress. I had been the one who saved him, yet, by some twisted fate, she was the one he worshipped.

I had so many things to say to him but like always, I swallowed them because I had learned years ago that Charlie didn't want the truth. He only wanted someone to project his anger on and I was the perfect target.

"Eat your cold dinner alone, Evelyn," he said, turning on his heel. "I have no appetite for the sight of your evil face tonight."

He strode out of the room without another word and as his footsteps faded away, I remained frozen in my seat, barely containing my emotions. When the first tear finally slipped, I quickly wiped it away, angry at myself. I would never let him know how much he hurts me, neither will I let him see my tears.

All I have ever done wrong was existing beside a sister that derived pleasure in seeing others suffer and from the moment we were kids until now, I was her perfect host and now, everyone believed I was the cause of her disappearance. Swallowing a sob, I stood up and began to clear the plates as I reassured myself I was going to be okay.

FrankI was not going to lose Serena to this bloody war, not to Charlie, and certainly not to anyone else.I drove away from the house with her words still echoing in my mind. The way she had looked at me when she asked about the child. That particular look she wore whenever she already knew the answer and was simply waiting to see whether I would lie to her. I had lied anyway because what else was I supposed to do? Tell her the truth and watch everything unravel?I needed a drink.I pulled into the first bar I found, pushed through the door, dropped heavily onto a stool, and looked at the man behind the counter."The strongest thing you have."He poured the drink without asking a single question.I finished the first glass faster than I should have and pushed it forward for another. The man beside me glanced over briefly before looking away. I stared at the bottles lined up behind the counter and thought about Serena's face, Julian's dismissiveness, and the particular exhaustion of

SerenaI sat at the dining table with a cookie in my hand, thinking about how clean everything was about to become.Evelyn would be first. Then Charlie would have nowhere left to run.Julian and Frank would be long gone before anyone started asking questions, and I would walk back into my life as though none of this had ever happened.A quiet laugh escaped me as I took another bite of the cookie.Frank must really take me for a fool. If that child truly existed, if Charlie and Evelyn really had a child together, then that pathetic fool had hidden it from me all this time.Charlie would pay for it.And the child...The child would disappear too.The television had been my only company for days.Out of boredom, I switched it on and flipped through the channels until a familiar face stopped me cold.A journalist sat across from two women I recognized immediately.Old friends. The kind who attended charity galas, birthday parties, and apparently television interviews."Who do you think Mr

JulianI came out of Leo's room and saw Evelyn stepping away from the side table where I had left my phone, and my stomach dropped before she even turned around. She was calm, too calm. She looked up when she heard me and smiled, the kind of smile that gave nothing away.“Goodnight Julian.” She walked to her room quietly. I stood in the corridor and watched her door close and then crossed to the side table and picked up my phone. The text was still on the screen.“Everything is ready, we just need her there.”I looked at the preview and at the angle from which she had been standing and did the calculation and felt cold move through me."Damn it," I muttered. But she had said nothing, shown nothing, and I could not tell if that meant she had not seen it or if she had seen it and was doing exactly what I would do in her position, keeping it close and saying nothing and waiting.I did not sleep well. The next morning I came downstairs to find Evelyn already in the kitchen, her hair tied

CharlieI couldn't think straight. Every minute, my mind drifted back to her, wondering where she was, how she was doing, and hoping Julian hadn't laid a hand on her or my son.I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, telling myself to sleep. But sleep never came.Sometime around two in the morning, exhaustion finally pulled me under. The darkness carried me somewhere I never wanted to see again.A room I didn't recognize.Evelyn lay on the floor while Julian stood over her, his hands were wrapped around her throat.I ran toward them, but my legs refused to move. The distance never closed.I screamed her name, “Eveeeeeeeeey!” yet no sound came out.I bolted upright, the room was dark and silent.I dragged both hands over my face and remained there for a long moment."Madam Laura." My voice carried farther than I intended.Within minutes, my housekeeper appeared at the door, tying the belt of her robe."Sir?""Bring me the whiskey," I requested. "The bottle, not a glass."She studied me b

EvelynIt was obvious he hated me.Every look he gave me, every moment of distance, the way he had pulled away when I kissed him as though I had burned him, broke me in ways I couldn't begin to describe. But I wasn't going to give up.I made that decision the morning after the kiss. I lay in my separate room, staring at the ceiling while the house gradually came to life. Leo's laughter drifted down the hallway, where Julian was probably taking him through the morning routine I had always handled. If Julian intended to keep his distance, I would close it without making my intentions obvious. After breakfast, a member of the staff approached me about the week's grocery order."Ms. Hart, what would you like on the menu this week?"I smiled."Ask Mr. Julian. Whatever he decides works for me."She blinked in surprise before nodding and walking off to find him.I watched her leave, keeping my expression perfectly neutral. Did she think I was now the woman of the house?Small things. If Juli

JulianI could tell she was desperate to speak to me. I deliberately acted as though I hadn't noticed, but I saw every attempt because I wanted her to need me.For three days, she had lingered at the edges of every room, finding excuses to walk past wherever I was. She always paused a little too long before turning away whenever I failed to acknowledge her.I made sure to keep my distance.Every morning, I took Leo to breakfast myself. I asked about his dreams, his favorite cartoons, or whatever happened to be on his mind, giving him my full attention while Evelyn sat across the table receiving nothing more than a polite nod."Uncle Julian, do you want to see my drawing?" Leo asked one morning, sliding a sheet of paper across the table."Show me everything," I replied, leaning forward.Evelyn watched us quietly, saying nothing.Neither did I.The separate room had been intentional. The staff had been briefed before she even arrived, and I knew exactly what that small detail would do t
