Maya stared at the text in surprise. The words didn't change no matter how many times she read them. If the Iron Wolves showed up at the Vipers' clubhouse tonight people would die. Dominic would die. Jake. Connor. All of them.

She looked around the clubhouse at men preparing for war. Wrench was checking motorcycles. Jake loaded magazines with bullets. Connor sharpened knives on a whetstone. Dominic stood in the center giving orders like a general preparing troops for battle.

  • The biker who broke fate   Chapter 103: In Time

They got there just after noon.Daniel opened the door and looked at Dominic and something passed between them that didn't need words and they went straight upstairs.Maya stayed downstairs with June who put the kettle on because that was what people did and they sat at the kitchen table and talked quietly about nothing important while upstairs the important thing happened.Dominic sat in the chair by his mum's bed.She was smaller than two weeks ago. He hadn't thought that was possible but it was. Lying there with her eyes half open, breathing in a way that had a sound to it now that hadn't been there before.Daniel stood near the door."I'll give you a bit," Daniel said and went out and pulled the door.Dominic sat there. His mum's eyes opened properly and found him. Still sharp. Everything else going but the eyes still sharp."You came back," she said. Barely above a whisper."Yeah," Dominic said."Didn't think you would," she said. "The first time I mean. Didn't think you'd come."

  • The biker who broke fate   Chapter 102: One Week

Nursery started on a Monday.Maya had been talking it up for weeks. Telling Nora about the other children and the painting and the outdoor space and the snacks which Nora was most interested in. What kind of snacks. Would there be round biscuits. Maya said probably and hoped that was true.Monday morning Nora woke up decided.Came downstairs in her nursery clothes that Maya had laid out the night before, sat at the table, ate her toast all the way to the edges without being asked, and looked at Maya."Ready," Nora said."Are you sure," Maya said."Ready," Nora said again like the question was unnecessary.Dominic drove them. Pulled up outside the small building with the painted gate and the sound of other children already inside and got out and unstrapped Nora from her seat.Nora stood on the pavement and looked at the gate.Something shifted in her face. Just for a second. The decided look wobbled.Maya crouched down next to her. "You okay," she said.Nora looked at her. "Will you co

  • The biker who broke fate   Chapter 101: The Drive Home

Nora was asleep before they hit the main road.Rabbit tucked under her arm, head tipped to one side, out completely the way only small children could go, like someone had flipped a switch.Maya drove.Dominic sat in the passenger seat looking out at the road and the fields going past and didn't say anything for a long time.Maya left him to it.Twenty minutes out of town he said, "She apologised."Maya kept her eyes on the road. "Your mum.""Yeah," Dominic said.He said it flat. Not like it fixed anything. Just like it was a fact he was still turning over."What did she say," Maya said."That she knew she wasn't easy," Dominic said. "That she knew I got the harder end of things growing up and she wasn't going to pretend otherwise." He paused. "Said she was glad I came.""How did that feel," Maya said."Strange," Dominic said. "Like hearing something you waited a long time for and then not knowing what to do with it when it comes."Maya nodded."I didn't say much back," Dominic said. "

  • The biker who broke fate   Chapter 100: Going Back

They left early Saturday morning.Nora was up before the alarm anyway, standing in their bedroom doorway at six holding her rabbit and looking at them like they'd overslept and the day was wasting.Maya packed the car while Dominic did Nora's breakfast and by half seven they were on the road, Nora in the back with her rabbit and her cup, already asking questions about where they were going and how long and whether there would be biscuits."Probably biscuits," Dominic said."What kind," Nora said."Don't know yet," Dominic said."I like the round ones," Nora said."I know you do," Dominic said.Maya drove. Dominic's idea, said he'd rather look out the window than watch the road, and she understood that without him having to explain it further. He was quiet most of the journey. Not the bad kind of quiet. Just inside himself, going through whatever he needed to go through before they got there.Maya let him.Nora filled the silence from the back seat without any help, talking to her rabb

  • The biker who broke fate   Chapter 99: Unknown Number

A call came on a Sunday morning.Dominic's phone was on the kitchen counter, buzzing while he was in the garden with Nora, both of them crouched down looking at something in the grass that Nora had decided was important.Maya saw the screen from the window.Unknown number. She left it.It rang off then rang again straight away. She went to the back door. "Dom. Your phone."He came in with Nora on his hip and picked it up and looked at the screen and something moved across his face that Maya clocked straight away."You know that number," she said.He didn't answer. Just looked at it ringing in his hand.It stopped. Then a text came through. One line.He read it and put the phone face down on the counter."Dom," Maya said."It's my brother," he said.Maya looked at him. In two and a half years she could count on one hand the times Dominic had mentioned his brother. Daniel. Older by four years, different in every way that mattered, last time they spoke was before any of this started and

  • The biker who broke fate   Chapter 98: Gerald

The neighbour's name was Gerald. He lived two doors down, retired, spent a lot of time at his front window or out front doing things that didn't really need doing just so he could be where he could see the street. He was friendly enough. Always said good morning. Always commented on Nora when he saw her. Told Maya once that they'd been a good addition to the road which Maya took as a compliment even though the way he said it suggested he'd had opinions about previous additions. But Gerald asked questions. Not rude ones. Just steady. Every conversation had at least one slipped in natural and easy to miss if you weren't paying attention.Where did you say you were from again? And what did you do before you moved here?Family nearby is it.Maya answered everything with the versions of the truth that Webb had helped them build. Solid answers, nothing that fell apart under pressure, history that held up if anyone looked. But Gerald kept asking and Maya kept noticing and after a while the n
