Amara barely remembered leaving the hotel hallway alive.

One moment Damien Blackwood was staring at her with those cold grey eyes, and the next she was back downstairs carrying champagne trays while her hands trembled so badly she nearly dropped an entire bottle on a senator’s wife.

Her mind replayed the scene endlessly.

The blood.

The silence.

The way Damien had looked at her like he could see every frightened thought crossing her face.

And worst of all?

He knew her name.

By midnight, the gala finally ended.

Amara rushed into the employee locker room, changing out of her uniform as quickly as possible. Her body ached from exhaustion, but anxiety crawled beneath her skin too violently for sleep.

Sienna sat cross-legged on one of the benches scrolling through her phone.

“You look like you saw a ghost,” she said immediately.

Amara grabbed her bag shakily. “I might have seen worse.”

That got Sienna’s attention.

“What happened?”

Amara hesitated.

Then shook her head.

“I can’t talk about it.”

Sienna narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “That sentence alone sounds criminal.”

Normally Amara would laugh.

Tonight she couldn’t.

Her phone suddenly buzzed again.

Hospital.

Her stomach dropped instantly.

She answered immediately while hurrying toward the exit.

“Hello?”

“Miss Bennett?” the nurse said gently. “Your brother had another episode tonight.”

Amara stopped walking.

The world around her blurred.

“Is he okay?”

“He’s stable now, but the doctor wants to continue treatment immediately. We’ve also discussed the overdue payments before…”

Of course they had.

Bills.

Always bills.

Amara closed her eyes painfully.

“I’ll pay something tomorrow,” she whispered.

“You said that last week.”

The call ended softly, but the shame lingered long after.

Sienna touched her arm carefully once they stepped outside into the rain.

“Hey.”

Amara looked away quickly before tears could form.

“I’m fine.”

“You’re clearly not.”

The city streets glittered with reflections from headlights and neon signs. Rain soaked the sidewalks while expensive cars rolled past like silent predators.

Amara wrapped her thin coat tighter around herself.

“I don’t know what to do anymore,” she admitted quietly.

Sienna’s expression softened instantly.

“We’ll figure it out.”

But Amara wasn’t sure anymore.

Because figuring it out required money.

And hope.

She was running out of both.

A sleek black car suddenly pulled up beside the curb.

Too expensive.

Too polished.

Too familiar.

Amara froze immediately.

The tinted back window rolled down slowly.

And there he was.

Damien Blackwood.

Still wearing the same black suit.

Still looking terrifyingly calm.

Rain streaked across the dark glass beside his face while city lights reflected against his sharp features.

Sienna blinked twice.

“…Why is a billionaire outside our workplace looking at you like that?”

Amara’s pulse began hammering violently.

Damien’s gaze stayed fixed on her.

“Get in,” he said.

Not rude.

Not loud.

Worse.

Certain.

Amara stared at him in disbelief.

“I’m sorry?”

The billionaire leaned back slightly against the leather seat.

“I dislike repeating myself.”

Sienna immediately stepped closer to Amara.

“Nope,” she said. “Absolutely not. That sounds like the beginning of a true crime documentary.”

For the first time, Damien glanced at Sienna.

Unimpressed.

Then his attention returned to Amara.

“Your brother’s hospital bills are overdue by forty-three thousand dollars.”

Amara’s breath vanished.

Sienna looked shocked.

“How do you know that?” Amara whispered.

Damien ignored the question completely.

“If the payment isn’t made by tomorrow morning, his treatment stops.”

Fear sliced through her chest instantly.

“How do you know about Noah?”

“I know many things.”

Rain crashed harder against the pavement.

Amara suddenly felt cold all over.

Not because of the weather.

Because this man standing before her had somehow entered every fragile part of her life within hours.

And she had no idea how.

Sienna looked ready to call the police.

“What do you want from her?”

Damien finally opened the car door himself.

Elegant.

Controlled.

Terrifying.

“I’d prefer not to discuss personal business on the street.”

Amara didn’t move.

Every instinct screamed at her not to get inside that car.

But Noah’s pale face flashed through her mind immediately afterward.

Hospital monitors.

Medicine.

Fear.

Desperation made dangerous things look reasonable.

Damien watched her silently.

Then he delivered the final blow.

“I can solve every financial problem you have tonight, Miss Bennett.”

Her chest tightened painfully.

“Why?”

The billionaire stepped closer beneath the rain.

Close enough for his voice to lower.

“Because I need something from you in return.”

Silence stretched between them.

Sienna grabbed Amara’s wrist.

“Do not go anywhere with this man.”

But Amara already knew she was going to.

Because poverty had a cruel way of cornering people.

And Damien Blackwood looked exactly like the kind of man who thrived in corners. 🖤

  • The billionaire's dark contract   Chapter Eight

Amara couldn’t stop thinking about the look in Celeste Laurent’s eyes. Pity. Not jealousy. Not annoyance. Pity. That frightened her far more than the warnings. The penthouse felt colder after Celeste left. Or maybe Damien’s silence was what changed the atmosphere. He stood near the windows overlooking the dark city, one hand resting inside his pocket while dawn slowly began bleeding silver across the skyline. Controlled. Unreadable. Like always. Amara hated that she was beginning to notice the tiny changes in him anyway. The slight tightening of his jaw when irritated. The way his voice deepened when angry. The dangerous stillness that settled over him whenever someone mentioned his past. “You’re doing it again,” Damien said suddenly. Amara blinked. “Doing what?” “Thinking too loudly.” “That isn’t a real thing.” “It is with you.” Annoyingly, he sounded serious. Amara crossed her arms. “Your ex-fiancée basically implied I’m going to die.” “She exaggerates.” “T

  • The billionaire's dark contract   Chapter Seven

“Who was that?” Damien’s voice cut through the silence sharply. Amara stared at the dark phone screen in her hand while unease crawled beneath her skin. “I don’t know.” “What did they say?” She hesitated. Something about repeating the words aloud made them feel more real. Finally, quietly: “Leave Damien Blackwood before he destroys you too.” The atmosphere inside the penthouse changed instantly. Damien’s expression went completely still. Which somehow looked far more dangerous than anger. “Give me the phone.” Amara handed it over immediately. He checked the number once before passing the phone to Elias, who had appeared from somewhere deep inside the penthouse like the world’s most terrifying sleep paralysis demon. Amara genuinely did not understand how this man kept materializing silently. “Trace it,” Damien said coldly. Elias nodded once. Then disappeared again. At four in the morning. No confusion. No questions. Just billionaire emergency behavior. Amara rubb

  • The billionaire's dark contract   Chapter Six

Amara barely slept. Not because the guest bedroom inside Damien Blackwood’s penthouse wasn’t beautiful. It was horrifyingly beautiful. The bed alone was probably worth more than her university tuition. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the glowing city below while soft rain continued tapping gently against the glass long after midnight. No. She couldn’t sleep because every time she closed her eyes, she remembered two things: The blood in the hotel hallway. And Damien saying: “Get used to it.” As if saving people was normal for him. As if he hadn’t looked terrifying only hours earlier. Nothing about this man made sense. Amara sat up around three in the morning, unable to quiet her thoughts any longer. The penthouse remained silent. Too silent. Carefully, she slipped out of bed and walked toward the kitchen for water. The marble floors felt cold beneath her bare feet as dim golden lights glowed softly through the massive space. The entire penthouse looked like somethi

The pen felt heavier than it should have. Amara stared at the contract while her heartbeat thundered unevenly inside her chest. One signature. That was all it would take to change everything. Maybe ruin everything. Damien waited silently across from her, hands resting calmly inside his pockets like he had all the time in the world. Which, annoyingly, he probably did. Rich people always looked patient. Poor people didn’t have that luxury. Amara swallowed hard. “This doesn’t even feel real.” “It will.” Something about his voice made warmth crawl uneasily along the back of her neck. She looked down at the contract again. Then signed her name. The moment the pen left the paper, silence filled the room. Heavy silence. Dangerous silence. Damien’s gaze dropped briefly to her signature before returning to her face. And for the first time since meeting him… he looked relieved. Not dramatically. Just barely. But Amara noticed. Which somehow frightened her more. “Congra

  • The billionaire's dark contract   Chapter Four

“This is insane.” Amara dropped the contract onto the glass table between them like it had burned her fingers. Damien remained leaning against the bar, perfectly composed while thunder rolled faintly beyond the penthouse windows. “I’ve been called worse.” “You want me to fake a relationship with you for six months?” Her voice rose slightly. “Do you even hear how ridiculous that sounds?” “Yes.” “And you think I’ll just agree?” “I think,” Damien said calmly, “you’re desperate enough to consider it.” The words struck harder because they were true. Amara hated that. Hated him for noticing. Her chest tightened painfully as Noah’s face flashed through her mind again. Hospital beds. Medicine bottles. Late-night coughing fits she pretended not to hear through thin apartment walls. Damien studied her silently. Like he already knew exactly which thoughts were destroying her. “What happens if I say no?” she asked carefully. The billionaire’s gaze didn’t move. “Then you leave.”

  • The billionaire's dark contract   Chapter Three

The inside of Damien Blackwood’s car smelled like leather, rain, and danger. Amara sat stiffly beside the tinted window while the city blurred past outside in streaks of gold and silver light. Across from her, Damien remained silent, one hand resting loosely against the armrest as if he hadn’t just dragged a stranger into the center of her own panic. Sienna’s horrified face still lingered in Amara’s mind. Do not go anywhere with this man. Too late now. The car was already moving. Elias Kane sat in the front passenger seat, broad shoulders rigid beneath a black suit. He hadn’t spoken once since Amara entered the vehicle, but she could feel his awareness constantly. Watching. Measuring. Like security cameras disguised as a person. Finally, Amara broke the silence. “How do you know about my brother?” Damien didn’t look at her. “I told you already,” he said calmly. “I know many things.” “That isn’t an answer.” His gaze shifted toward her then. Sharp grey eyes. Cool and u
