Adrian lit his cigarette calmly and sat on the genuine leather sofa. After a few seconds, he looked at her as he tapped his cigarette ash into the ceramic dish.

"Dana, I recall that I already set the boundaries of our relationship. Do not make me resent you."

She tapped her fingernails on the table in front of him, then sat down and quietly pulled a cigarette from his pack, challenging his eyes.

"But you are the greatest benefactor of our relationship, Adrian."

Slowly closing her eyes, she leaned her face forward with the cigarette in her mouth to light it from his, then leaned back again and continued:

"While I? I feel like the loser here. I gave you everything you wanted—my body, my soul, and all my money and influence, which you control as you please—while you do not allow me to gain any privileges from you."

Adrian knitted his brows.

"When you say this, you make me feel as though you are the one superior here and I am exploiting you. Have you forgotten who I am? This money of yours is worth nothing to me. Do not mix up the concepts, Dana. I manage your business only because you are my uncle's ward, and I take nothing from you for myself."

She looked at him, her eyes reddening as a deep sadness lay within them.

"Did your uncle also command you to use his daughter as a substitute for the girl you love?..."

Adrian’s hand froze in midair just as he was about to tap the cigarette ash again. A sudden silence enveloped the suite, and his eyes turned sharply toward her with a long look that caused her trapped breath to slowly retreat.

He extinguished his cigarette very slowly, pressing it down into the ceramic dish until it was completely disfigured, then leaned his body toward her, making his face only a few inches away from hers.

"Substitute?" The word came from between his lips in an extremely low tone, yet it carried a calmness that terrified her more than any shouting. He continued in a mocking tone: "I warned you... since the very first day you approached my bed of your own free will, and I told you not to expect a heart from me that does not belong to you... You are the one who chose the role of the substitute, so do not weep now and pin the accusation on me."

Dana looked at him in a silence that suffocated her neck until her throat began to ache, before she finally spoke after swallowing her bitterness:

"I thought that proximity would change you. I thought that with my money, my influence, and my great resemblance to her, I would make you forget Eileen. But the moment you learned the news of her miscarriage and her husband casting her out, you left everything and ran to her... Do you think she will accept you, Adrian? Eileen is a loyal woman; even if her husband destroyed her, she will not throw herself into another man's arms easily!"

Adrian turned away from her and stood up to his full, towering height and commanding presence, a cold, mysterious smile etching itself on his lips. He walked toward the massive window overlooking the mansion's garden, observing the horizon, then spoke in a quiet voice overflowing with his mystery.

"She will accept... and I will make her completely forget even the name of Kai, providing a warmth that will make her burn her entire past for my sake."

Dana sighed. "Do what you want, Adrian. After everything that happened in the past, you haven't changed... Even after she preferred a man who is worth nothing over you, you still give a woman like her value."

Adrian's eyes snapped toward her with sheer violence. "I warn you, Dana, do not insult her or touch her in any way."

Dana looked at him and stood up. "I hope you do not lose your way again, Adrian."

The luxury car came to a stop beneath the old apartment building, and the driver stepped out to open the door for Eileen with complete respect. She disembarked with feeble steps, her body still trembling slightly from the remnants of fatigue. She climbed the wooden stairs, her heart beating systematically, and pushed open the door of the modest apartment with her slender body.

She stepped inside, and a bleak stillness wrapped around the place. She moved with heavy steps toward the bedroom, but she froze in her tracks at the threshold of the door, her eyes widening in bewilderment and a grief that wrung her insides.

On the bed lay her husband, "Kai."

He was lying in a chaotic position, his clothes creased and scattered, and his hair covering his forehead at random. He showed signs of extreme exhaustion and sleeplessness; his face was pale, dripping with cold sweat, while the sharp smell of wine emanated from his breath and the entire room, having completely blacked out his consciousness.

Eileen stiffened in her place, feeling a burning lump choking her throat. She advanced toward the bed with very slow steps, barely touching the ground, and sat on its edge, contemplating his lost features. In his confusion and misery, she saw a great brokenness. Despite all the cruelty, injustice, and abandonment she had tasted from him days ago, and despite the hurtful words he had hurled at her at the hospital and in the phone call... her heart grew weak again.

Her hot tears fell silently, pouring down her pale cheeks. She felt a deep pity tearing through her chest as she looked at his wretched state; she remembered the other Kai... the Kai of the past, her loyal lover who used to fill her days with warmth and security before life's debts swallowed him and turned him into this destructive person who was going through the worst period of his life.

Her trembling hand slowly extended, bypassing all the false promises of strength she had laid down before Adrian, to touch the scattered strands of Kai's hair with extreme gentleness. Deep down, she was incapable of completely hating him, and this was what tore her heart the most and made her intensely angry with herself.

But she stopped suddenly as this cruel question attacked her mind:

"Since when did all this begin?"

Eileen stepped out of the car with heavy, measured strides, wrapped in a blanket of quiet composure while her mind churned with countless thoughts. Adrian walked beside her toward a modern residential building in the heart of the city. They rode the elevator up in solemn silence until they arrived before the door of a luxurious apartment. The moment Adrian unlocked the door and she crossed the threshold, she froze in awe, taking in her surroundings: the decor overflowed with warm earthy tones, delicately arranged indoor plants, and subtle artistic touches that mirrored her deep craving for tranquility and elegance—as though every detail had been crafted directly from her unspoken desires. She had never possessed enough money to make her own small apartment comfortable, yet what stood before her looked exactly like the haven she had always wanted. She turned toward him, her wide eyes filled with quiet astonishment at this miraculous harmony. Adrian approached her with steady, confident

The warm melody of a piano filtered softly through the ambient space, mingling with the rich aroma of roasted coffee and the cool breeze of a Roman evening. Dani opened her eyes with extreme slowness, registering that she was stretched out comfortably on a plush leather sofa. Heavy with lingering sleep, she raised her head to lock eyes with Marco, who sat opposite her, gazing intently at her features while swirling the ice inside his glass. She sat up straight immediately, running a hand over her face to shake off the haze:— "How long was I asleep? And why didn't you wake me as soon as we arrived?"Marco offered a subtle smile:— "Only half an hour... You looked exhausted, and frankly, you were quite beautiful asleep, far away from your usual noise."She fixed him with a sharp, stern look:— "Let's get back to why we're here. The deal... What are your true terms for the partnership? And what exactly do you want from Adrian's business?"Marco leaned back, his friendly posture shifting

  • The breaking point of love   Ch 39: The Treacherous Memory

Aline stood frozen in the middle of the office, her shocked blue eyes sinking into the details of the painting hanging before her—and her name written in the lower corner. Her trembling fingers reached out toward the canvas, touching the signature with excruciating slowness, as she desperately tried to unearth the memory of this painting from her past. No matter how hard she wracked her brain and searched through the years of her life, there was nothing! Not a single trace crossed her mind of that night when this dreamlike, unreal flower was painted with its turbulent colors and unrefined shadow work. How could a painting bearing her handwritten signature rest in the heart of Adrian’s private office without her knowledge? Soft taps on the frame of the open door broke the quiet of the suite, followed by the sound of light footsteps. Aline turned in slight panic to find one of the estate’s maids standing respectfully, her head bowed. The maid smiled in a gentle tone: — "My Lady..

Aline woke up slowly, a strange weight pressing upon her chest. She opened her eyes to meet the faint golden light escaping from the window of the luxurious suite. For a few brief seconds, her blue eyes wandered alienly across the decorated ceiling before registering the warm, steady gaze of the man wrapping his strong arm around her waist.Adrian was not sleeping; he was awake, contemplating her, watching the struggle of emotions across her small face, studying her features intently. He didn't move an inch, maintaining the warmth of his embrace and his grounded posture while gently stroking her short hair with his fingertips. His gaze drifted subtly to her trembling lips before locking his eyes onto hers, speaking in a low, deep voice brimming with refuge and comfort:— "Good morning, my love. Did you sleep comfortably?"Aline looked at him, offering a quiet gaze—uncertain how to respond to the word "my love," yet in the deepest depths of her heart, she had finally decided to surrend

  • The breaking point of love   Ch37: Siege

Dana remained seated behind her desk in Rome, the darkness of the night clouding the room while the cruel silence weighed heavily upon her. She tossed her phone aside onto the scattered papers, her chest filling with an unbearable sense of heartbreak and bitterness. The housemaid’s words kept echoing in her mind like a constant reminder of the plain truth: no matter how high her status rose or how much she gave to Adrian, she would always remain second best... a passing margin in a story where Eileen occupied the absolute center. In the midst of this lostness and grief that had battered her pride, her phone vibrated again on the desk, sending a light hum that cut through the room's silence. She raised her exhausted eyes to check the screen, only to find a name she never expected to see at such an hour... Marco. She took a deep breath, trying to pull herself together, then picked up and answered in a voice that seemed to vent her frustration on the caller:— "Yes, what do you want? H

  • The breaking point of love   Ch36: Embraced After the Scattered Storm

The car passed through the massive iron gates of Adrian’s estate, penetrating the stone driveway flanked by tall trees until it came to a stop in front of the main entrance. The estate was shrouded in a solemn silence, utterly deserted save for the guards stationed at the perimeter walls and a few house staff fading into the shadows of the night. Adrian didn't wait a single second; he stepped out and lifted Eileen into his arms with firm resolve, as though fearing she might dissolve between his hands if he loosened his grip. They stepped inside, the echoes of his heavy footsteps resounding against the luxurious marble floor. He carried her through the wide corridors, ascending toward the upper level, until he pushed open the door to his private suite and locked it behind them immediately, isolating them completely from the outside world. The moment the door shut, all apparent calm vanished. Adrian pulled her toward him with fiery intensity, enclosing her body within his arms, his li
