I never even realized that I was pulling my legs close to me and resting my head upon them as I sat on the floor next to Kai, drowning in my thoughts, until my eyes grew heavy. My body surrendered to its exhaustion, and sleep overcame it, while my consciousness kept fighting alone against a painful and old dream that used to haunt me frequently. Then it vanished, and here it was visiting me once again with Adrian's return—Adrian, who remained absent from the company for a year and did not return until I was hurt.

Adrian, who was always at the edge of the horizon, pressing upon my feelings and never forcing me, waiting for me to choose him even just once, but I never turned to him. Yet I return again and again to Kai...

Kai, who resembles a hedgehog, giving me warmth once and withdrawing into himself, wounding me with his thorns a thousand times. Yet I hold him close every time. I do not know why there is all this struggling from my side; is this love?

Loving Kai was an affliction with which I afflicted myself, and here I am bleeding because of the wound of his love.

In my dream, Adrian was seven years younger, shaking me and speaking passionately:

"Eileen, why, why him!! I can give you a better life than him!!!"

I pulled myself away from him, my features turning mocking:

"At least he never forces me to do anything! You deceived me and you want to withdraw my file from the University of Arts!! Who are you to control my life!!!"

Adrian shouted in my face, pressing tightly on my hands with force:

"I am protecting you!!!!"

Protecting me?? Protecting me from what?... I asked him, I screamed at him, but everything turned into a mirage when I felt a large hand stroking my hair and a familiar voice repeating my name... It is.. Kai..

I opened my sleepy eyes and saw him looking at me in bewilderment as he tried to wake me up:

"Eileen, what are you doing on the floor?"

Eileen looked at him with misty eyes, confusion dominating all her senses. She was not sure if she had truly woken up or if this was merely an extension of her baffling dreams. The Kai before her now—it seemed as though his cruelty of yesterday had evaporated with the effects of the wine, replaced by a quiet confusion and an unspoken regret.

He did not wait for an answer from her; rather, his strong arms extended to lift her from the floor, her slender body utterly depleted by fatigue. He placed her on the bed with extreme gentleness and tucked her in with the blanket as if she were a piece of glass he feared breaking. He sat beside her, wiping the beads of cold sweat from her forehead, and spoke in a low, raspy voice:

"Rest a little.. I will make us some coffee; perhaps it will help you wake up."

Kai moved toward the kitchen, while Eileen kept watching his back in silent bewilderment. The room still reeked of that sharp odor, but his sudden care stormed all her fortresses once again. His lack of consciousness always brings him back to his old version—the version she adored and for which she found a thousand excuses.

After a few minutes, he returned carrying a warm mug from which the rich aroma of coffee emanated, banishing the unpleasant smell of drunkenness from the place. He sat on the edge of the bed and held her trembling hand to carefully place the mug between her palms, avoiding looking directly into her reproachful eyes.

He left the mug in her hand without interest when he suddenly looked at her and realized:

"Where were you, Eileen?"

I looked at him, and the confusion that was wrapping around my mind seconds ago began to dissipate, replaced by a true terror. The features of gentleness vanished from his face, replaced by that sharp tone and the deep-seated suspicion in his eyes. With trembling fingers, I gripped the hot coffee mug, as if its heat were the only thing connecting me to reality, while questions spun in my head like a hurricane: What will I answer him? Do I tell him that I was at the mansion of the man he loathes more than anyone else in the world? And that I spent the whole night there?

Kai took a step backward, and his narrow eyes began to examine me sharply from head to toe.

Kai's features tightened, and the trace of regret disappeared completely, the veins of his neck bulging as he repeated his question in a low voice, charged with a suppressed anger that resembled the calm before the storm.

I swallowed my bitterness and felt a severe dryness in my throat preventing the words from coming out. The hedgehog that I thought had been tamed moments ago unleashed its thorns all at once, piercing the remnants of my broken heart with them.

"I.. took a night shift at a hotel."

Eileen stepped out of the car with heavy, measured strides, wrapped in a blanket of quiet composure while her mind churned with countless thoughts. Adrian walked beside her toward a modern residential building in the heart of the city. They rode the elevator up in solemn silence until they arrived before the door of a luxurious apartment. The moment Adrian unlocked the door and she crossed the threshold, she froze in awe, taking in her surroundings: the decor overflowed with warm earthy tones, delicately arranged indoor plants, and subtle artistic touches that mirrored her deep craving for tranquility and elegance—as though every detail had been crafted directly from her unspoken desires. She had never possessed enough money to make her own small apartment comfortable, yet what stood before her looked exactly like the haven she had always wanted. She turned toward him, her wide eyes filled with quiet astonishment at this miraculous harmony. Adrian approached her with steady, confident

The warm melody of a piano filtered softly through the ambient space, mingling with the rich aroma of roasted coffee and the cool breeze of a Roman evening. Dani opened her eyes with extreme slowness, registering that she was stretched out comfortably on a plush leather sofa. Heavy with lingering sleep, she raised her head to lock eyes with Marco, who sat opposite her, gazing intently at her features while swirling the ice inside his glass. She sat up straight immediately, running a hand over her face to shake off the haze:— "How long was I asleep? And why didn't you wake me as soon as we arrived?"Marco offered a subtle smile:— "Only half an hour... You looked exhausted, and frankly, you were quite beautiful asleep, far away from your usual noise."She fixed him with a sharp, stern look:— "Let's get back to why we're here. The deal... What are your true terms for the partnership? And what exactly do you want from Adrian's business?"Marco leaned back, his friendly posture shifting

  • The breaking point of love   Ch 39: The Treacherous Memory

Aline stood frozen in the middle of the office, her shocked blue eyes sinking into the details of the painting hanging before her—and her name written in the lower corner. Her trembling fingers reached out toward the canvas, touching the signature with excruciating slowness, as she desperately tried to unearth the memory of this painting from her past. No matter how hard she wracked her brain and searched through the years of her life, there was nothing! Not a single trace crossed her mind of that night when this dreamlike, unreal flower was painted with its turbulent colors and unrefined shadow work. How could a painting bearing her handwritten signature rest in the heart of Adrian’s private office without her knowledge? Soft taps on the frame of the open door broke the quiet of the suite, followed by the sound of light footsteps. Aline turned in slight panic to find one of the estate’s maids standing respectfully, her head bowed. The maid smiled in a gentle tone: — "My Lady..

He didn't move an inch, maintaining the warmth of his embrace and his grounded posture while gently stroking her short hair with his fingertips. His gaze drifted subtly to her trembling lips before locking his eyes onto hers, speaking in a low, deep voice brimming with refuge and comfort:— "Good morning, my love. Did you sleep comfortably?"Aline looked at him, offering a quiet gaze—uncertain how to respond to the word "my love," yet in the deepest depths of her heart, she had finally decided to surrend

Dana remained seated behind her desk in Rome, the darkness of the night clouding the room while the cruel silence weighed heavily upon her. She tossed her phone aside onto the scattered papers, her chest filling with an unbearable sense of heartbreak and bitterness. The housemaid’s words kept echoing in her mind like a constant reminder of the plain truth: no matter how high her status rose or how much she gave to Adrian, she would always remain second best... a passing margin in a story where Eileen occupied the absolute center. In the midst of this lostness and grief that had battered her pride, her phone vibrated again on the desk, sending a light hum that cut through the room's silence. She raised her exhausted eyes to check the screen, only to find a name she never expected to see at such an hour... Marco. She took a deep breath, trying to pull herself together, then picked up and answered in a voice that seemed to vent her frustration on the caller:— "Yes, what do you want? H

  • The breaking point of love   Ch36: Embraced After the Scattered Storm

The car passed through the massive iron gates of Adrian’s estate, penetrating the stone driveway flanked by tall trees until it came to a stop in front of the main entrance. The estate was shrouded in a solemn silence, utterly deserted save for the guards stationed at the perimeter walls and a few house staff fading into the shadows of the night. Adrian didn't wait a single second; he stepped out and lifted Eileen into his arms with firm resolve, as though fearing she might dissolve between his hands if he loosened his grip. They stepped inside, the echoes of his heavy footsteps resounding against the luxurious marble floor. He carried her through the wide corridors, ascending toward the upper level, until he pushed open the door to his private suite and locked it behind them immediately, isolating them completely from the outside world. The moment the door shut, all apparent calm vanished. Adrian pulled her toward him with fiery intensity, enclosing her body within his arms, his li
