Chapter 240: The Gift of Lies

Fake Eva’s point of view

I enter the dining room, feeling defeated for the first time in a long time.

Maybe—just maybe—I’m lucky enough that Theo hasn’t arrived yet. But no. As I scan the tables, my eyes lock onto him immediately—sitting with Marcus, deep in discussion. Of course. Because the universe apparently enjoys kicking me when I’m down.

Shit. So much for slipping in unnoticed.

I square my shoulders, forcing the best smile I can muster as I head for the buffet. Maybe I can do it here, in plain sight. Maybe a little theater will help. After all, people love a performance, and I’ve always played my roles perfectly.

But as I stir the coffee and glance around, my stomach tightens.

Dozens of eyes are watching me—some curious, some wary, all far too focused. It’s not the right moment. Not yet. I need privacy, vulnerability, the illusion of sincerity. Not this circus of suspicion.

So I pick up the coffee and walk toward their table, mask firmly in place. “May I join yo

Nathaniel’s point of view It’s been a week since we hit the road—me, Zach, Lily, and Carol. Even Malcolm decided to join, which surprised all of us. He claimed the Goddess sent him a vision with one mission: protect us, and help us. It’s strange. Executioners don’t usually get involved in search-and-rescue missions. Then again, this isn’t a normal rescue mission. We’re hunting Rufus. That old bastard is hiding so well I’ve started to wonder if he’s using cloaking spells older than I am. But I intend to find him—because he holds the answers we need. If I can capture him, maybe I can contain the storm he’s already unleashed. Every time we get close, he’s gone. Nothing but burned-out hiding holes and dusty old footprints. “Maybe he has friends helping him,” Lily mutters as she exits the latest ruin we searched. “If so, we could track one down. Question them.” I huff a laugh. “That rotten bastard doesn’t have friends. He has enemies and cockroaches—and I’m pretty sure even

Aries’s point of view I sit in my quiet corner, trying not to let this fake-Eva nonsense get under my fur. Deep breaths. Steady thoughts. I remind myself that I’m a damn wolf, not some hormonal pup swayed by a pretty face and a tear or two. And then she has to drop that bomb. She has a wolf. Seriously? Now she’s trying to force a wolf into the game? What’s next—a miracle pregnancy? I reach out cautiously, sensing for the presence behind her eyes. Her wolf. If that’s what it really is. Because knowing who she is… this has to be a trap. She’s cooking something. And whatever it is, it won’t be good for Theo—or me. “Hey there,” I say gently, the moment I feel her stir. “What’s your name?” She whimpers, fragile. “You don’t want me. Why? Have I done anything wrong?” “I didn’t say that,” I answer, holding my voice steady. “I just asked your name. My name is Aries.” Trying to be the bigger wolf here. Trying to play fair. “I know your name,” she snaps. “And I also kno

Theo’s point of view I freeze. Her words echo in my head, bouncing against every wall of logic, instinct, and memory I have. She has a wolf. Is that even possible? My mind races with a thousand questions. Did the Goddess really give her a wolf? And if so, why now? Is this a blessing… or another layer of the curse? Then again, wouldn’t that be interfering? Isn’t that the very thing the Goddess swore she couldn’t do? Something’s not right. I feel Aries clawing at the edges of my mind, restless and agitated. He wants out. Badly. I hesitate for a second, then loosen my grip and let him surface—just enough. He leans in toward her, sniffing her closely. I feel everything through him. The scent, the tension in her muscles, the glimmer of something new beneath the surface. “She has a wolf,” he says after a moment. But then, softer. Suspicious. “…But maybe she had it all along.” He withdraws a little, pacing restlessly in the background of my mind. “Did you feel

Fake Eva’s point of view I wake up as sunlight creeps lazily into my room, stretching across the floor like a smug little intruder. Today is going to be beautiful—I can feel it in my bones. I smile as I stretch, spine cracking with satisfaction. My wolf stirs in the back of my mind, groggy but ever watchful. “Good morning, sunshine,” I purr to her, grinning. “What are you up to, my little maniac?” she replies, her voice dripping with amusement—but I can feel the tension rippling under her words. “Mmmm… nothing much,” I hum. “Just that today it’s time you get yourself a mate.” “Wait—are we really going to do this?” Her voice wavers slightly, and for the first time, I feel a flicker of real fear from her. “Oh come on, don’t be such a wuss,” I laugh. “Have a little faith in us. Today’s the day we seal the deal.” I saunter to the shower, mind already racing ahead. There’s so much to do, so many paths to choose. I just need the right moment to plant the potion—something subtle, smo

Eva’s point of view We’re standing in the middle of Elias’s room, surrounded by little scraps of paper—each one a clue, a whisper, a dead end. All we have are assumptions. We’re diving blind in black waters. We came up through the secret passage. I didn’t want to give Michael and Sonia another reason to snap at each other. Their relationship is hanging by a thread already, and I’ve cut enough strings this week. “You know,” I murmur, staring at a folded clue, “it’s not his fault he sees her as me.” “I couldn’t care less about that,” Sonia replies, eyes scanning another fragment of prophecy. “I didn’t try to force him to believe you’re the real one. But he’s been trying non-stop to prove me wrong. That’s what bothers me.” She tosses the paper back into the box and looks at me, her voice sharper than before. “I’m not stupid, and I sure as hell don’t depend on him. So why does he keep treating me like I’m the irrational one? Instead of finding common ground, he insists on driving
