Lucian’s POV

The image of Eva collapsing onto the cold stone floor haunted me the entire walk down the hallway.

When she dropped, my breath had hit a wall. A sickening knot of guilt tightened in my stomach—a dark, unwelcome weight. Had I pushed her over the edge? Had my threat last night in the study broken her? I wanted her to feel the weight of her deceit, but seeing her lying motionless, pale as snow, had sent a sharp jolt of raw panic straight through my chest.

I stood outside the guest chamber near the servants' quarters, adjusting my cuffs before turning the brass handle.

When I pushed the door open, the room was quiet save for the soft murmur of voices. The physician was packing his satchel by the washbasin, while my mother and Mrs. Gable stood near the window.

Then my eyes landed on the bed.

Leo was sitting on the very edge of the mattress, leaning in close to Eva's unconscious form. His shoulders were tense, his brow furrowed in a raw, unshielded worry I had never seen on his face before.

"Do you think it was the heat?" Leo asked the doctor, his voice tight, brimming with frantic concern. "Or maybe she hasn't been eating properly? Why did she just pass out like that?"

I stood frozen in the doorway, studying my younger brother. Leo was a charm-monger, a man who treated women like fleeting summer breezes—enjoying them, parting with them, and never looking back. He had never cared deeply for anyone. Yet here he was, hovering over a common maid, his eyes practically burning with protective panic.

It struck a cold, uncomfortable chord inside me.

"What happened?" I asked, stepping into the room and keeping my voice clipped and neutral.

My mother turned, letting out a weary sigh. "The physician says she was merely lightheaded. High anxiety, most likely, coupled with exhaustion. She needs rest."

"I see," I murmured, my gaze flickering back to Eva’s still face. A quiet relief washed through me, though I kept my expression an unreadable wall of ice. "I should get going then. Father is waiting for me at the estate office."

I turned to leave, eager to escape the heavy, suffocating air of the room.

"Lucian, wait," my mother called out.

I stopped at the threshold, looking over my shoulder. "Yes, Mother?"

"I need you to schedule an outing with Genevieve this weekend," she said smoothly, her tone leaving no room for argument. "A private dinner in the lower gardens. Consider it preparation for the upcoming wedding."

My jaw tightened. "Mother, I have not fully agreed to this match."

My mother stepped toward me, her eyes narrowing with sharp, unyielding authority. "That is not my concern, Lucian. You will marry this season. Either you find a woman of status you actually wish to bring home, or you marry Genevieve. There are no other options."

I stared at her, suppressing the bitter scoff rising in my throat.

If only she knew. If only she had any idea that finding my own bride was precisely what I intended to do—if only to tear her neat little arrangements to pieces.

"I will see what I can do, Mother," I replied dryly.

Without waiting for her reply, I cast one last, lingering glance at the bed—at Leo sitting faithfully beside her—and walked out into the corridor, the heavy silence of the house settling over me like lead.

Eva’s POV

I opened my eyes to darkness and foreign surroundings.

I wasn't in my cramped quarters. I sat up quickly, my heart hammering against my ribs as I looked around the spacious guest room. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn, but the faint silver glow of the night sky filtered through, telling me hours had vanished.

I looked down at myself. I was still in my maid's uniform, though my apron had been removed and my collar loosened. Memories swept back in a sudden, icy wave—the suffocating heat of the drawing room, the ringing in my ears, and the terrifying moment the world went black.

I swung my legs over the edge of the bed and made my way to the window. Pushing the curtain aside slightly, I stared out into the pitch-black night.

A quiet click echoed from the door.

I turned around, stepping back as the handle moved. The door swung open, and Leo stepped inside carrying a small wooden tray.

"Leo," I breathed, relief and confusion tangling in my chest. "What... what happened? Is it night already?"

"Hey, hey," Leo said softly, instantly setting the tray down on a side table and stepping into my space. He reached out, his hands gently catching my shoulders before I could take another step. "What are you doing out of bed? You shouldn't be standing."

He guided me back to the mattress, his touch careful, as if he thought I might shatter.

"You passed out cold right in the middle of the drawing room," he murmured, looking down at me with an unusual softness in his eyes. "The physician said it was sheer exhaustion and anxiety."

I let out a slow breath, looking down at my lap. "I must thank your mother... and you. I am so sorry for causing a scene."

"Don't be ridiculous," Leo scoffed gently, sitting down on the edge of the bed beside me. "I talked to my mother and Mrs. Gable. You have the next week off to rest and get back on your feet."

My eyes snapped to his. "A whole week?"

"A whole week," he confirmed, a faint, playful smirk returning to his lips. "It turns out your health actually matters around here, Eva."

A genuine, quiet smile broke across my face. "Thank you, Leo."

"Of course," he said smoothly. He turned to grab the tray, setting a small bowl of warm soup and a glass of water on my lap. "I brought you some food in case you were starving."

"Thank you, but I can eat on my own," I said, reaching for the spoon. "I passed out, Leo. I'm not crippled."

"Nonsense," he teased, gently taking the spoon right out of my hand before I could object. "You're dynamic, stubborn, and currently my patient. Now open up."

I bit back a chuckle, rolling my eyes, but I didn't stop him as he lifted a spoonful of soup to my lips.

As I swallowed the warm broth, Leo watched me with that effortless, charming smile, blowing lightly on the next spoonful before handing it over.

Sitting there under the soft moonlight, watching the flicker of warmth in his eyes, a strange flutter stirred deep in my chest. I had spent my entire life building walls, keeping every man at a distance to protect my heart and my mission. But Leo was chipping away at those defenses without even trying.

He was dangerously sweet, infuriatingly attentive, and for the first time in my life, I couldn't bring myself to pull away.

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 57: UNRAVELED SECRETS

Eva’s POV I pressed my back flat against the cool stone wall of the alcove, holding my breath as Laura passed by. Her heavy silk skirts rustled against the floorboards before her footsteps finally faded down the corridor. Once the coast was clear, I looked down at the velvet cushion and parchment ledgers in my arms—the preparations for the gala would simply have to wait. I dropped the stack onto a nearby side table, turned on my heel, and quietly trailed after the guard Laura had instructed. I kept a discreet distance, watching him navigate the long passage toward the courtyard doors. I needed those letters. If Laura was plotting something against me—or against the family—I couldn't afford to remain in the dark. "You there! Halt," I called out, keeping my voice authoritative yet calm as I closed the distance between us. The guard stopped immediately, turning around and bowing his head. "My Lady? How may I assist you?" "I need your help with an urgent matter regarding

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 56: VOWS IN THE SHADOWS

Lady Eleanor’s POV The estate was wrapped in a suffocating, pitch-black silence. Slipping out of the grand bed, I made sure Arthur’s rhythmic breathing remained undisturbed before wrapping a dark woolen cloak over my shoulders. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as I crept down the back servants' stairs, slipping out into the cool, damp night air. I moved quickly toward the quiet edge of the courtyard, where the shadows swallowed the stone archways whole. A tall figure stepped out from the darkness. James. The moment his face came into view under the pale moonlight, the dam broke inside me. I rushed into his arms, burying my face into his chest as hot tears spilled down my cheeks. "James... oh, James, I am so sorry," I sobbed, my voice trembling with the heavy weight of my guilt. "I am so, so sorry I did this to us." James wrapped his arms around me tight, holding me against the chill of the night. He lifted a hand, gently wiping the tears from my cheeks

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 55: SHADOWS AND BARGAINS

Genevieve’s POV I didn't bother knocking. I simply pushed open the heavy mahogany doors to Leo’s private study and strode inside like I owned the place. Leo was sitting at his easel, shirtless, a smudge of dark charcoal dusting his collarbone. He froze, paintbrush suspended in mid-air, and glared at me over his shoulder with sheer annoyance. "Have you no bloody manners, Genevieve?" he snapped, grabbing a discarded tunic off the back of his chair and throwing it over his head. I leaned against the doorframe, folding my arms with a sly, triumphant smile. "Well, I used to... until I saw what you were trying to do with your brother's wife in the garden yesterday." Leo’s jaw tightened, his hazel eyes darkening instantly. "Are you going to keep dragging that out?" "I need a favor from you," I said, dropping the smug act and taking a step toward his desk. Leo let out a dry, bitter laugh, adjusting his shirt. "A favor? And why on earth would I do you a favor?" "Because you hav

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 54: FRAGILE ALIBIS

Lucian’s POVWarmth enveloped me before my eyes even opened. The heavy, suffocating paralysis had receded, leaving my body exhausted but functional once more. As my vision adjusted to the morning light filtering through the heavy drapes, I realized I was still on the hard floor, resting against someone. It was Eva. She was fast asleep, leaning against the side of the velvet armchair with her head tilted slightly toward mine.I stayed still for a long second, my gaze trailing over her features. Up close, without her sharp wit or guarded glares, she looked startlingly soft. Her dark lashes rested long against her cheeks, framing the fine, sculpted line of her jawline. I didn't mean to stare—I wasn't the kind of man to succumb to sentimentality—but I couldn't deny the striking composure of her face. Then reality hit me like a bucket of ice water. She saw everything. She had found me completely frozen, helpless, and hyperventilating on the floor. Anxiety spiked in my chest. Knowing

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 53: AN ANCHOR IN THE DARK

Eva’s POV The hallway outside Lucian’s bedchamber was quiet, but a lingering sense of unease pulled me toward his door. After the humiliating chaos in the garden with Leo and Genevieve, I needed to face him—to ground myself, or perhaps just to prove that I wasn't losing my mind. I pushed the heavy oak door open and stepped inside. The room was pitch-black, swallowed entirely by shadows. The fireplace had died down to faint, glowing embers, leaving the chamber cold and oppressive. Reaching for a match, I lit the wall sconces, allowing soft, amber light to flood the room. My gaze swept across the floor—and my heart instantly stopped. "Lucian?" I gasped. He was collapsed on the hardwood floor beside the velvet armchair. He wasn't moving. His body was completely still, his eyes wide, fixed unblinkingly on the dark ceiling above. Beside him lay the shattered remains of a glass, water pooling around the broken shards. Panic seized my chest. "Lucian! Lucian!" I rushed to his

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 52: FRAGILE ALIBIS

Eva’s POV Genevieve’s sharp voice cut through the dusk like a shattered blade, sending a cold, horrifying panic straight through my veins. I immediately scrambled away from Leo, pushing myself off the grass and stumbling to my feet. Leo stood up right beside me, smoothing down his coat with a hasty, awkward flick of his hands. The air between the three of us turned suffocatingly tense. Genevieve took a slow step closer, her hands placed on her hips, her expression a mix of sheer disbelief and growing peevishness. "That... is your brother's wife, My Lord," she spat, her eyes darting between Leo and me. "Have you both completely lost your senses?!" "No—no! That is not what happened at all!" I stammered, my voice trembling as heat rushed into my cheeks. "I tripped on the grass, and—and we just fell! It was an accident!" Genevieve raised a single, cynical eyebrow, her look making it abundantly clear that she didn't believe a word of my pathetic lie. Oh God. I couldn't even b
