LOGINThe next shot shattered the garage window. Glass exploded across the floor. I grabbed Anastasia around the waist and dragged her behind the concrete support column as another burst of gunfire tore through the doorway.
“Stay down.”I ordered
She dropped beside me, breathing hard. Outside, the compound had erupted into chaos. Men were shouting. Engines roared to life. Boots pounded across the concrete as the Black Vipers scrambled into position.
Rafe’s voice came through my earpiece. “Jaxon, they’re inside the east perimeter!”
I pulled the magazine from my weapon and checked it before looking at Anastasia.
“Do exactly what I tell you.”
Her eyes met mine, wide and dark against the shadows “Where are you going?”
“To stop them.”
“Jaxon….”
I caught her face between my hands for half a second. “Stay here.”
The fear in her eyes almost made me stay. Almost. Then another gunshot cracked through the night. I released her and moved. The moment I stepped out of the garage, one of my men sprinted toward me. “Three vehicles came through the eastern gate. At least eight armed men.”
“How did they get through?”
“Gate system went down.”
My jaw tightened. “How long?”
“Two minutes.”
Two minutes was enough to get people killed.
“Get everyone to the inner perimeter. Nobody moves alone.”
He nodded and toe off towards the yard. I moved toward the courtyard, firing at one of the attackers as he tried to cross between two buildings. He dropped behind a vehicle. Rafe appeared from the opposite side, returning fire.
“More coming from the north!” Rage yelled.
“Cut them off.”
We moved together, clearing the angle. The Black Vipers knew how to fight on our ground. They knew every entrance, every blind corner, every building that could be used as cover. But tonight something was wrong. The attackers weren’t moving like men trying to take the compound. They weren’t trying to reach the armory. They weren’t targeting the clubhouse. They weren’t even trying to kill me. They were spreading us out.
Every time we pushed toward one group, another opened fire somewhere else. A diversion. I ducked behind a concrete barrier as bullets struck the wall above my head.
“Rafe!”
He crouched beside me. “Yeah?”
“Where’s security?”
“Trying to get the cameras back.”
“Why?”
His expression darkened in the muzzle flashes. “Someone disabled the east system from inside.”
That confirmed my worst suspicion. This wasn’t just an external assault, someone inside the compound had cleared the runway for them. They were creating maximum noise, drawing every gun to the gates, leaving the interior exposed.
“Find Connor.”
“Already looking.”
I looked across the courtyard. Two of our men were pinned down near the main entrance while another group fought attackers near the garage. Exactly what someone wanted. My stomach dropped.
“Anastasia.”
“You think this is about her?” Rafe asked, reading my face.
“I know it is.”
The attackers had chosen their timing too carefully. They had waited until we were already dealing with the records, the Devereaux name and the discovery that someone had been monitoring Anastasia for years. Then they hit us from multiple directions. They didn’t need to defeat the Black Vipers. They only needed us looking everywhere except the one place that mattered. Anastasia.
“Get to her.” I turned toward the clubhouse.
Rafe started after me. “I’m with you.”
“No. Stay here and hold the yard.”
“Jax….”
I took off. The compound blurred around me. Gunfire followed me through the corridors as I pushed past two men rushing toward the eastern entrance.
“President!” One shouted but I ignored them taking the stairs two at a time. My only thought was Anastasia. The hallway leading to her room was empty. My hand tightened around my weapon.
“Anastasia!” I threw my voice down the hallway. No answer. I reached her door. It was closed. I grabbed the handle. Locked. My pulse slammed against my ribs.
“Anastasia!”
Still nothing. I stepped back and kicked the door. The lock broke. I rushed inside and the room was empty.
The bed was untouched. Her phone was still sitting on the bedside table. For a fraction of a second, my mind refused to process the scene. Then the details hit me, an overturned chair near the wall, the wardrobe door standing open, the window curtain swaying gently in the draft. Someone had been here.
I crossed the room quickly.
“Anastasia!”
Nothing. I checked the bathroom and it was empty. The adjoining hallway, empty.
My breathing became heavier. No. She couldn’t have simply disappeared. I had put guards outside this room. I had moved her closer to me because the traitor had already been watching her. Someone had gotten past them. I turned back toward the bedroom.
Then I saw it near the edge of the carpet.
A dark smear against the pale fabric .I dropped to one knee and touched the floor. Fresh, wet blood.
A thin trail led toward the doorway. Not enough to tell me how badly she was hurt, but enough to confirm the nightmare, someone had taken her.
My grip tightened around my weapon until my knuckles went numb. Outside, the gunfire continued to rattle the windows and men kept shouting in the yard, but the noise faded into background static.
The only person I had promised Clara I would protect was gone. And there was blood on the floor.
POV: ANASTASIAI could still see his face.Even with my eyes closed, it burned behind my eyelids. The man who had forced his way into my room, who had tried to drag me into the shadows while gunfire shook the compound, who had spoken my name like he had known it his whole life.I wrapped my arms around myself as Jaxon stood in front of me, his tall frame blocking out the cold gloom of the service passage.“Who was he?” Jaxon asked. His voice was controlled, but I could see the tension in his jaw. I looked at him.“I’ve seen him before.”“Where?”“Here. In the compound.”Jaxon went completely still.I forced myself to think. The man’s face had been partly covered when he entered my room, but when I fought him, the fabric had slipped. I saw him clearly.Dark hair. A narrow scar near his eyebrow. The same watch he worn the day I arrived at the compound.“I don’t know his name.”“Describe him.”I gave him every detail I could remember. Jaxon listened without interrupting, his eyes dark and
POV: JAXONThe blood was still wet beneath my fingers. For one second, I couldn’t breathe and then something inside me snapped.“LOCK DOWN THE COMPOUND!”My voice tore through the hallway, echoing off the bare walls.Every man within hearing distance stopped.“Nobody leaves!. Nobody comes in!.” I roared, steeping out into the corridor. “Search every building, every vehicle, every room. I want the grounds checked twice!.”Rafe appeared at the end of the corridor, gun still in his hand, his eyes scanning the chaos. “What happened?” I pointed toward the bedroom.“She’s gone.” His expression changed immediately.“Anastasia?”I didn’t answer. I didn’t need to. Rafe stepped inside, saw the blood and swore under his breath.“Find her,” I growled, stepping into his space.“We will…”“No.” I cut him off, my voice dropping in a dangerous whisper. “We don’t have time for ‘we will.’ Find her.”Rafe nodded once. He turned and started issuing orders. Within seconds, the compound was moving. Doors sl

POV: ANASTASIAI couldn’t stop looking at his scars. Maybe it was because of what my mother had written.Trust the man who carries the scars.Or maybe it was because, for the first time, I was beginning to see Jaxon Cross as something other than the dangerous man everyone in this compound seemed to fear.He was still intimidating. Still capable of violence. Still the man who could walk into a room and make everyone straighten without saying a word. But I’d also seen him stand outside my bedroom for hours because someone had threatened me. I’d seen him take a bullet meant for someone else. I’d watched him keep his temper when I challenged him, even when I knew it wasn’t easy for him.And now I knew my mother had trusted him enough to leave my life in his hands.I found him alone in the garage. He was leaning against one of the motorcycles, sleeves pushed up to his elbows while he worked on something beneath the seat. The compound was unusually quiet. I stood at the entrance for a momen
ANASTASIA POVSomeone had been looking for me long before I ever knew there was anything to find.I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Rafe’s discovery had followed me through breakfast, through the guarded hallways of the compound, and into the secure room where the contents of my mother’s box still covered the table. Twenty years.Someone had searched confidential records connected to me for nearly twenty years. That meant this hadn’t started when my mother died or It hadn’t started when the men broke into my apartment. It started while I was still a child. I stared at the photographs spread across the table. For years, I’d believed my childhood had been painfully ordinary. It had been my mother, our small home, school, birthdays, scraped knees and the quiet routines that made up our life. But perhaps it had only looked ordinary because Clara had worked very hard to make it that way. I picked up one of the photographs. My mother stood outside a building in London, younger than I reme
JAXON POVThe name hit me before Rafe had even finished saying it.Devereaux.I had heard it in rooms where men lowered their voices without realizing they were doing it. I had seen it attached to businesses that looked legitimate from the outside and disappeared into something much darker once you knew where to look.Victor Devereaux wasn’t just another criminal with money and connections. He was one of the most powerful men in Britain’s underworld. And now his name was sitting in front of Anastasia.I looked at her. She was still staring at Rafe, waiting for someone to tell her what the name meant.I couldn’t.“What do you know about him?” she asked. Her voice was steady, but I could see the tension in her hands. I glanced at Rafe and he understood immediately.“Not here,” I said.“Of course.” Anastasia’s eyes narrowed as disappointment laced her voice. I hated that I was the reason for it.She had spent her entire life being kept in the dark. Her mother had done it. I’d done it. Now
