Zara flopped on her bed the moment she got home. The shoot with Kemi had gone surprisingly well, but the unexpected appearance of Regan and Imani at the eatery still rattled her. She couldn’t stop replaying the image of them sitting together, laughing—so familiar, so easy. The sight of them hadn’t been a coincidence. It couldn’t have been.

She hadn’t heard anything they said, of course. She and Kemi had quickly paid for their takeout and left. But the sight alone had stirred something in her chest that she couldn’t quite name. Was it jealousy? Annoyance? Or just confusion?

Kemi’s voice interrupted her thoughts.

“You can’t tell me that didn’t shake you a little,” Kemi said, dropping her bag on the floor and climbing onto Zara’s bed without permission.

“It didn’t,” Zara lied, scrolling through her phone like she hadn’t been thinking about it all the way home. “They probably just bumped into each other, like we did.”

“Oh please. The way they were seated? That wasn’t a coincidence. They w

  • The reluctant vow   Chapter 274

The air was thick with emotions when Zainab finally decided it was time to go. The reunion had drained everyone — tears shed, truths confessed, and promises whispered in the shadows. Mrs. Tunde still held her daughter’s hand tightly, unwilling to let go, as though one blink could make her disappear again.Zainab smiled softly and said, “Mama, I’ll come back. I promise. But it’s safer if I leave before anyone else notices.”Mrs. Tunde nodded reluctantly, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She reached up to adjust Zainab’s hijab, her hands trembling. “Please, my child, be careful. That man must never know you’re here.”“I know,” Zainab whispered. “He won’t.”Zara stepped closer, her heart pounding. “I’ll walk you to the back gate. The security there won’t question me.”Kemi, who had been silent for a while, exhaled shakily. “This is too risky. If anyone sees her—”“They won’t,” Zainab cut in, her tone calm but firm. “I’ve lived in worse danger before. This is nothing.”They moved qui

  • The reluctant vow   Chapter 273

Three long days crawled by with no sign of Zainab. Each passing hour stretched thin with worry, hope, and silence. Zara tried to distract herself with her twins, her light workouts, and conversations with Kemi, but deep down, her mind was restless. Every ring of her phone made her jump. Every knock on the door made her heart race.By the fourth evening, the mansion glowed softly under the orange hue of the setting sun. Mrs. Tunde was in the nursery, humming a Yoruba lullaby as she rocked one of the babies to sleep. Kemi sat in the living room, folding tiny baby clothes while scrolling through her phone. Zara stood by the balcony, lost in thought. Her phone buzzed. She frowned and picked it up — it was the security guard.“Madam Zara,” the man said, his voice cautious, “there’s a woman at the gate. She says she’s here to see you.”Zara’s brow furrowed. “Who is she?”“She didn’t say, ma. She’s wearing a black hijab. Said you’ll know her.”Zara froze, her grip tightening around the phone

The following morning, the mansion buzzed quietly with its usual rhythm — the gentle cry of one of the twins, the soft chatter between the maids, and the faint hum of gospel music playing from the kitchen where Mrs. Tunde prepared breakfast. Yet, in Zara’s room, the air was heavy with something else — anticipation.Zara sat on the bed, nervously tapping her fingers on her phone screen. Her mind replayed last night’s conversation with her mother like a film she couldn’t pause. The shock in her mum’s eyes, the tears, the confession about Chief Kareem — everything lingered.Kemi walked in wearing one of Zara’s oversized T-shirts, her hair tied up in a bun. “You’ve been quiet all morning,” she said, sitting beside her friend. “What’s wrong? You look like someone who hasn’t slept.”Zara sighed. “I told my mum last night.”Kemi blinked. “Told her what?”“That Zainab is alive.”The words hit Kemi like a wave. “Wait… you actually told her?”Zara nodded. “She cried, Kemi. She said they thought

ONE WEEK LATER The week passed quietly, almost too quietly — the kind of peace that feels borrowed, like it could slip away at any moment. The Kareem mansion was bathed in soft morning light, the air filled with the faint scent of baby lotion and fresh flowers from the garden. For once, the halls echoed with laughter instead of tension.Zara had started a little routine for herself. Every morning, after feeding the twins and putting them down for their nap, she would roll out a yoga mat in the wide space near the balcony and start her light home workouts. It wasn’t anything heavy — just stretches, light squats, and a few moves to remind her body that she was still strong. Her belly was softer now, her waist not as defined as before, but when she caught her reflection in the glass doors, she smiled faintly. She was getting there.Regan often joined her — not to exercise, but to keep her company. Sometimes he held the babies while she worked out, other times he sat on the couch, watchi

  • The reluctant vow   Chapter 270

It was a quiet night in the Kareem mansion. The twins had finally fallen asleep after hours of fussing, their tiny breaths soft and peaceful in their cribs. The only light in the room came from the small bedside lamp, casting a warm glow across Zara’s tired face.Kemi sat cross-legged on the bed beside her, scrolling through her phone while humming a tune. Zara stared at her reflection in the mirror for a long time, her fingers tracing the faint stretch marks on her belly through her nightgown. Her heart felt heavy.“Kemi…” she called softly.Kemi looked up from her phone immediately. “Yeah?”Zara’s voice was low. “Do I look… different?”Kemi blinked, trying to understand where the question was going. “Different how?”Zara turned to face her fully, eyes glossy. “Just look at me. My stomach isn’t flat anymore, my hips feel wider, my skin looks dull. I used to love looking in the mirror, but now…” Her voice broke a little. “Now I just feel ugly.”Kemi frowned and put her phone aside, si
