Anita pov

The first thing that came back was his laugh.

Not the sound of it, exactly, though that arrived too, warm in a way I’d apparently spent months not knowing I’d been missing.

What came first was the knowledge of it, entire and complete, as certain as your own name is certain, without needing to reach for it.

I knew what his laugh sounded like when something genuinely surprised him versus when he was being kind about a joke that wasn’t funny.

I knew he laughed with his whole chest and t

Kelvin pov Marcus was already sitting in my kitchen when I came downstairs, laptop open, two cups of coffee poured and going cold beside it.He had a key. He’d had one for months and I’d never once regretted giving it to him, until this exact morning, when the sight of him already in my flat before I’d even had coffee told me more than anything he’d said yet.“I found the storage facility’s old billing records,” he said. “Before they went digital, before anyone thought to worry about a paper trail. A clerk who’s been there fifteen years still has the archive boxes in her own garage. Cost me more than I want to admit, but she let me photograph everything.”He turned his laptop toward me.“Unit 4B. Rented eight months ago. Not by Callum.” Marcus tapped the screen. “By a shell company. But the shell company’s registered agent, the actual signature on the paperwork, belongs to a lawyer who does exactly one other thing on record.”“What?”“He handles overflow work for Donald’s firm. Small

DonaldHe chose the dinner table for it, because a dinner table gave a lie somewhere ordinary to hide.“I keep thinking about that weekend at your father’s cottage,” Donald said, cutting into his food without looking up. “The one where the boiler broke and we spent the whole two days wrapped in every blanket in the house. I still can’t believe your father laughed about it afterward instead of being furious.”Anita looked up.There was no such weekend. There was no cottage. Her father did not own one, had never owned one, had mentioned once, long before, that his own father had sold the family’s small coastal place before Anita was born. Donald had invented the entire memory an hour earlier, in his study, turning it over until it had the right texture, the boiler and the blankets chosen precisely because they were the kind of detail a real memory would contain. He had learned, across weeks now, exactly how to watch her face. Not for the obvious signs. For the smaller ones underneath th

  • The wife I swore I’d never be    Chapter 110 — A Different Corner

AnitaKelvin texted at nine that morning, before I’d even finished my coffee.Change of plan. Meet me at the place on Ashworth instead of the studio corner. I want to show you something.I hadn’t questioned it. He did that sometimes now, small last-minute changes, and I’d stopped reading danger into every one of them months ago, back when I still flinched at anything unplanned. The place on Ashworth turned out to be a bookshop with a café tucked into the back of it, shelves rising to the ceiling, the smell of old paper and fresh coffee tangled together in a way that made the whole room feel like somewhere time moved slower.“You found this?” I asked, looking around.“I’ve known about it for a while. Never had a reason to bring anyone.” He pulled out a chair for me at a small table wedged between two shelves, half-hidden from the rest of the room. “I thought you might like somewhere that wasn’t the studio, or the river, or anywhere either of us has ever had to be careful in.”“Somewher

  • The wife I swore I’d never be    Chapter 109 — The Look He Hated

Donald pov He kissed her in the kitchen doorway on an ordinary Tuesday, a gesture he’d repeated a hundred times since the hospital, and felt her flinch before she caught herself. Her mouth softened back into place almost immediately. Her hand came up to rest against his chest, same as always.Anyone watching would have seen nothing.Donald was not anyone. He pulled back and looked at her, and there it was, already smoothing itself away, but not quite fast enough.A look he’d catalogued once, long before, in the ugliest months of the marriage, and had been certain he’d finally erased.Disgust.“Everything all right?” he asked.“Fine.”Her smile arrived nearly perfect.“You caught me thinking about the studio. Sorry.”He let it go on the surface, because the surface had always been where she told him the least useful version of the truth. He watched her differently after that.At dinner her laugh landed a half-second late, a performance rather than a reflex. His hand found hers across

  • The wife I swore I’d never be    Chapter 108 — What Clara Left Behind

Anita pov Helen brought it up over coffee the morning after the gala, casual on the surface and not at all casual underneath, which was true of most things she brought up.“Clara Whitfield’s people finally sent the revised exclusivity terms. No spousal signature clause this time. Clean, fair, exactly what we asked for months ago.”Helen slid the folder across the table.“I thought you’d want to know before I sign off on our end.”I looked at the folder. I did not pick it up right away.“How is she,” I asked. “Clara. Do you know.”“I don’t, honestly. Her office has been entirely professional, nothing personal in any of it.”Helen studied my face.“Why do you ask.”I turned my cup a slow half-circle on its saucer, watching the ring of coffee left underneath it rather than looking up at her.“I know she and Kelvin were together,” I said finally. “Before. I know it ended, and I know some of why, and I’ve never once let myself think too hard about what that cost her, because thinking abou

  • The wife I swore I’d never be    Chapter 106 — Wrong Number

AnitaMarcus stared at the screen for one full second before he answered. In that second, I understood, watching his face, that he was deciding something about how to sound before he’d even lifted the phone to his ear.“Yes,” he said.I couldn’t hear the other side of it.I only had Marcus’s face to read, and I read it the way Kelvin had taught me to read everyone now, watching for the small involuntary things a person couldn’t fully control. His jaw tightened. Then, unexpectedly, it eased.“No,” Marcus said.“Wrong number, I think. There’s no Danny here.”He held the phone a moment longer, listening, then ended the call and set it face down on the table.A long breath left him, taking the tightness in his shoulders with it.“That wasn’t Callum,” he said.“That was someone using Callum’s old number, apparently.”“He must have had it reassigned recently.”“Whoever’s got it now was trying to reach someone named Danny.”The relief that swept through the room was so immediate and so physi

His footsteps stopped just inside the kitchen doorway.I had turned the phone over by then. Both hands on the counter. The coffee machine made its noise at six forty-seven.I didn’t move to pour until it finished. I stood at the counter with my hands wrapped around nothing and listened to it run. That sound. The only sound in the whole house. The specific quiet that exists when you are the only one awake and have n

“The Meridian deal was always going to close in Q3,” I said. “Donald’s team structured it that way from the beginning. The timeline was never a surprise.” Mr. Alderman nodded like I had said something brilliant. His wife smiled at me and looked away in the same breath. The smile of a woman who se
