An hour later, after her mother finally left the estate, Salma went upstairs to draw a long warm bath. The bathroom filled with thick, scented steam as she sank into the deep bubble bathtub, the hot water doing nothing to ease the sudden ache in her chest. She stared at her phone for a long time before finally dialing Aria’s number. Aria’s hopeful, sweet voice came through the speaker instantly.

"Honey, How did the meeting go? How was it?"

Salma leaned her head back against the edge of the tub, watching the bubbles pop. She didn't prepare for the twist in her father's will so she didn't know what to tell Aria. She desperately considered telling her the truth right then and there, she wanted to tell her about the three unbelievably attractive men currently sleeping under her roof, and exactly how her father's feral wives had completely lost their minds over the will. She wanted to share the entire burden. But before she could speak, Aria’s excited voice cut back in.

"I can't wait for you to officially step up as the CEO, babe. I've already started contacting top designers for my own wedding dress and the planning? I will bring it up to speed once I come home. Sammy can't wait to start the fittings with me!" Aria giggled, referencing her best friend. Salma couldn't help but remember how Sammy threatened her when she first started dating Aria, the four-foot-five petite girl told her she’d break her legs if she ever hurt Aria and she had laughed it off because she genuinely believed then that she would never hurt Aria.

"She's already acting like the maid of honor." Aria continues, Salma’s swallowed hard, the words of truth dying right in her mouth. She couldn't break Aria's heart, not today. Not when Aria had been meticulously planning their dream wedding from the moment Salma had proposed to her last year over that fancy, candlelit dinner.

"Everything went fine Baby" Salma said instead, her voice straining to sound normal as she chose the safety of a lie.

"Did it?" Aria asked, leaning into the phone.

"Yes. My stepmothers only got standard stipends..." Salma lied smoothly omitting her own part of the story deliberately, her heart cracking a little further. "But my actual inheritance... I... uhmm...it won't be fully effective until a year's time. Uhm..."

"Baby, what’s the matter?" Aria’s voice shifted instantly, sounding deeply worried through the line. Salma let out a silent, ragged sigh into the empty bathroom.

"I’m just missing you, babe. It’s been a really long couple of days. I will find some time to visit the sanctuary when I can, my love... But can you do me a favor? Can you hold off on the whole wedding planning thing for just a little bit? I mean... my father just died, and the company is a mess."

A soft, disappointed gasp came from Aria’s side of the line.

"Oh. I understand, Salma. Just that... never mind." her tone suddenly becoming distant and clipped. "Uhm, Sammy actually just got here to pick me up. I think I'm going to head out for lunch with her. Can I talk to you later?"

Salma closed her eyes, she knew these exact excuses. Aria never wanted to discuss the bitter, tough topics; the moment things got uncomfortable or heavy, she suddenly always had something urgent to do with Sammy.

"Okay, Arry," Salma whispered, the old nickname tasting like ash on her tongue. "I need to get out of this bathtub anyway. Talk later, babe."

The call went completely silent, Salma dropped her phone onto the bath mat. She pulled her knees tightly against her chest, letting the hot tears finally fall freely into the water as the raw, gaping wound of her father's death, and the massive web of lies she had just spun tore through her entire soul.

Salma woke with a violent start as the morning light filtered through the heavy velvet curtains. She hadn't expected to fall asleep so easily. Shifting against the pillows, she instantly noticed the clean, comfortable sensation of her skin, and a small, involuntary smile touched her lips, Shane had cleaned her up before leaving the room. But the comfort lasted for barely a second. Her phone was vibrating aggressively on the nightstand, its bright screen illuminating the dark wood. Salma rolled over, her heart dropping into her stomach as Aria’s name flashed across the display. A cold, suffocating wave of intense guilt slowly crept into her chest, squeezing her lungs until it hurt. She slid the answer button, clearing her throat quickly she spoke. "Hello, sugar." She tried desperately to sound normal, to project the image of the dedicated fiancé Aria believed she was. "Uhm... were you sleeping?" Aria’s voice came through the line, flat drained of its usual warmth. Salma quickly che

As Salma said I do to yet the third man this week, fixing the heavy, shiny gold band onto Shane’s finger, she felt completely, utterly exhausted. The flashbulbs of the private press line exploded in the background like miniature bursts of lightning, but her world had narrowed down to a dull, physical ache. The black designer sandal heels she wore were aggressively pinching her pinky toe. The delicate cream lace veil pinned into her dark curls felt itchy against her scalp, and the silk-faille wedding gown though undeniably a masterpiece of high fashion—felt like a suffocating straightjacket. She stood at the altar perfectly rigid, forcing a flawless smile for the cameras while her soul withered. The entire week had been a surreal, highly orchestrated nightmare. On Monday, she had married Devon in this same grand hall, before the same high-society congregation, with the same priest reciting the same vows. She had genuinely enjoyed Devon’s soft, comforting vibe, but the wedding night h

By Monday afternoon, Salma walked out of a grueling, three-hour conference, her head throbbing as her assistant hurried alongside her down the office corridor. "Miss Wellington, you have your final bridal dress fitting scheduled for three o'clock this afternoon" her assistant murmured, flipping through her tablet. "And I’ve penciled in your lunch with Mr. Jim at one to discuss the final merger parameters. The shares are holding steady, but the board is anxious for a formal announcement regarding the acting CEO seat." "My wedding is in two week, Joyce, the board shouldn't be worried about announcing CEO, my weddings would do just that. Keep the pressure on the public relations team" Salma muttered, pushing open the heavy glass doors to her private executive office. She stopped dead in her tracks. Sitting comfortably on the corner of her pristine mahogany desk was her mother, looking incredibly striking in a flashy, gold-and-white designer suit that practically screamed old money.

By Monday morning, the Wellington mansion had transformed into a hall of tulle, sample menus, and event planners. Salma had completely checked out of the preparations, handing the reins entirely to her personal assistant with one non-negotiable rule. "No white," Salma had commanded. "Not a single scrap of white fabric enters my wardrobe for any of these ceremonies. Clear?" Her assistant had nodded frantically, scrambling to adjust her notes. White was sacred, it was exclusively reserved for the dream wedding she and Aria had been planning for the past year. To keep the chaos organized, her assistant had hired three of the top-tier wedding planners in the country, one completely dedicated to each husband's specific ceremony. The entire circus was being fueled by Salma's mother, who had practically moved into the estate's east wing. She was constantly on the phone, aggressively barking orders at high-end floral vendors and catering executives. Salma knew exactly what her mother wa

  • The woman who inherited three husbands    Chapter 8: Touch

When she finally met Aria in person, it was months after that library encounter. Salma had walked into a small, tucked-away bookshop around town, completely unaware of what was about to hit her. At the time, Salma had actually given up on finding the mysterious redhead and had gone right back to her usual casual dating scheme. She was trying to pick out a quick gift for a long-legged blonde she had started seeing two weeks prior. The girl loved dark humor, and Salma was very interested in getting between the sheets with her after dinner, so she figured a good book would be the perfect incentive. Salma had already planned the whole evening out: she was going to order high-end takeout, have the staff at her penthouse set up a cozy, candlelit picnic, and turn up the chandelier just enough so the girl could read a few pages before Salma moved in for a kiss. As she searched the aisles, she spotted a petite redhead dressed in a denim short pinafore over a simple white crop shirt. Her pale

  • The woman who inherited three husbands    Chapter 7: The Sound of Her Voice

Salma's sobs died down leaving nothing but the hollow, rhythmic dripping of the faucet to fill the silence of the massive bathroom. She grabbed a plush black towel, wrapping it tightly around her body, but she couldn't shake the freezing chill that had settled deep into her chest. She walked over to the vanity mirror, wiping away the thick condensation with the palm of her hand. Her reflection stared back at her. Aria was everything the elite high-society world wasn't. She was a quiet, unassuming girl from a quaint town in Scotland, standing at five-foot-four with a full, round ass and perky breasts that were absolutely to die for on her petite frame. Back during their college days at NYU, Aria had been a literature major, the kind of girl who was always found sitting peacefully under the campus cherry blossom trees, completely lost in her own world as she scribbled random notes in her journals. The first time Salma had ever heard Aria's voice, it had literally stopped her dead in
