Chapter 9 : “Not a date “

last update publish date: 2026-06-23 06:07:11

“This is not a date.”

Irina repeated the words for what felt like the hundredth time.

She stood before the mirror in her hotel suite, adjusting the sleeve of her dark emerald dress.

The color complimented her eyes.

Not that she cared.

This was a business event.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

At least that was what she kept telling herself.

Unfortunately, her reflection looked unconvinced.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

“Come in.”

Maria entered carrying a clutch purse.

One look at Irina and she froze.

“Oh.”

Irina immediately narrowed her eyes.

“What?”

“You look stunning.”

“It’s business attire.”

Maria laughed.

“If that helps you sleep at night.”

Before Irina could respond, her phone buzzed.

A message.

From Kyle.

I’m downstairs.

Her heart betrayed her with a single hard beat.

Ridiculous.

Absolutely ridiculous.

She grabbed her purse and headed for the elevator.

A few minutes later, the doors opened into the hotel lobby.

And there he was.

Waiting.

The moment Kyle looked up, he forgot what he had been thinking about.

For several seconds, he simply stared.

Irina tried not to notice.

Failed miserably.

The emerald dress wrapped elegantly around her figure.

Her dark hair flowed over one shoulder.

She looked beautiful.

Not in a dramatic way.

Not in an impossible way.

In a way that made him unable to look away.

“You’re staring.”

Kyle blinked.

Then smiled.

“You noticed.”

Her cheeks warmed.

Dangerous man.

Very dangerous.

“Shall we?”

He offered his arm.

Irina hesitated.

Then accepted.

And neither of them mentioned the smile that immediately appeared on Kyle’s face.

The event was being held aboard a luxury yacht overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

Golden lights reflected across the dark water.

Soft music drifted through the evening air.

Everything felt elegant.

Sophisticated.

Romantic.

Far too romantic for something that was supposedly not a date.

Kyle seemed completely unbothered.

He introduced her to investors.

Business partners.

Industry leaders.

Yet somehow, despite being surrounded by hundreds of people, his attention always found its way back to her.

It was unsettling.

Every time she glanced up—

He was looking.

Watching.

Not possessively.

Not arrogantly.

Simply…

Interested.

As though he genuinely wanted to know everything about her.

Hours passed quickly.

Soon they found themselves standing alone on one of the quieter decks overlooking the water.

The city sparkled behind them.

The wind gently played with strands of Irina’s hair.

Neither spoke.

The silence felt comfortable.

A rare thing.

“I had a good time tonight.”

The admission surprised her.

Kyle’s smile softened.

“So did I.”

His voice was quieter now.

More personal.

The distance between them suddenly felt smaller.

Irina looked away first.

Toward the water.

Toward anything except the way he was looking at her.

Then Kyle spoke again.

“Can I ask you something?”

She laughed softly.

“You ask that before every dangerous question.”

His smile widened.

“Fair.”

For a moment, he seemed to reconsider.

Then finally—

“Who hurt you?”

The question landed gently.

Yet somehow it struck deeper than any question before.

Irina’s breath caught.

Kyle immediately regretted it.

Not because of the question.

Because of the look that appeared in her eyes.

Pain.

Raw.

Unhealed.

And suddenly he wanted to take the words back.

“I don’t have to answer that.”

“No.”

His voice softened.

“You don’t.”

The kindness nearly broke her.

Because he wasn’t demanding answers.

Wasn’t pushing.

Wasn’t forcing his way past her walls.

He was simply waiting.

And somehow…

That made her want to tell him.

Not everything.

Just enough.

“My husband left me.”

The words came quietly.

Kyle’s expression never changed.

Never judged.

Never pitied.

So she continued.

“He replaced me.”

A painful laugh escaped her.

“As if I was nothing.”

The wind carried the silence between them.

Kyle looked out over the water.

His jaw tightening.

Not because he was angry at her.

Because he was angry for her.

A woman like Irina should never have been made to feel disposable.

And for reasons he couldn’t explain…

That realization hit him harder than it should have.

Much harder.

Finally he turned back toward her.

Their eyes met.

Neither looked away.

“Then he was a fool.”

The words were simple.

Yet they wrapped around her heart with surprising warmth.

For a moment, neither moved.

Neither spoke.

The city lights reflected in the water around them.

The air seemed to disappear.

Leaving only the two of them.

And one terrifying realization.

For the first time in years…

Irina wanted to believe a man again.

And for the first time in years…

Kyle wanted someone to believe in him.

The rain began as a light drizzle.

No one paid much attention to it at first.

The guests continued mingling across the yacht while soft music floated through the evening air.

Kyle and Irina remained on the quieter deck.

The conversation had become easier.

More personal.

For the first time in years, Irina wasn’t thinking about work.

Or Tyler.

Or court hearings.

She was simply existing.

And strangely enough…

She felt at peace.

Then a loud crack of thunder echoed across the sky.

Several guests startled.

Within minutes, the drizzle transformed into heavy rain.

The event organizers immediately announced the end of the gala.

Guests hurried toward the exits.

Some laughing.

Some complaining.

Some running.

Irina looked toward the dock.

A long queue had already formed.

Wonderful.

Kyle glanced at her.

“Looks like we’re stuck.”

She sighed.

“Just my luck.”

A small smile touched his lips.

“Come on.”

“Where?”

“The lounge.”

Together they moved toward one of the yacht’s private indoor lounges reserved for executive guests.

The room was quiet.

Warm.

Comfortable.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the storm outside.

Most of the guests had already left.

Leaving only a handful of people scattered around the room.

An attendant brought coffee.

Kyle thanked him before handing one cup to Irina.

She wrapped her fingers around the warm mug.

Outside, rain battered the glass.

Inside, silence settled between them.

Not awkward.

Comfortable.

The kind that only happened when two people genuinely enjoyed each other’s company.

For several moments neither spoke.

Then Kyle loosened his tie slightly.

The gesture surprised her.

It was the first time she had seen him look anything less than perfectly composed.

“Tough day?” she asked.

He laughed quietly.

“You have no idea.”

Something about his expression made her study him more closely.

The shadows beneath his eyes.

The exhaustion he usually hid.

The pressure he carried.

For the first time, she stopped seeing the billionaire.

And started seeing the man.

“What is it really like?” she asked.

Kyle looked at her.

“Being CEO.”

He leaned back slowly.

As though considering whether to answer honestly.

Then—

“My mother used to say people admire success because they only see the result.”

Irina listened quietly.

“They never see the cost.”

The smile on his face faded.

Just slightly.

Enough for her to notice.

“What did it cost you?” she asked softly.

For the first time that evening…

Kyle didn’t answer immediately.

Instead he looked out toward the storm.

As though searching for something inside the rain.

And when he finally spoke…

His voice was quieter than she had ever heard it before.

“Almost everyone I cared about.”

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Painful.

Real.

And suddenly Irina realized something she hadn’t expected.

Kyle George was lonely too.

Karen knew something was wrong the moment she walked into the house. It wasn’t the silence. The Rashford mansion had been silent for weeks now. Ever since Tyler started pulling away. Ever since Jacob stopped treating her like the center of his world. No. This felt different. Dangerous. The kind of silence that came before a storm. She set her handbag on the console table and glanced toward the living room. Jacob was sitting on the couch. Waiting. A thick folder rested on the coffee table in front of him. Karen’s stomach tightened immediately. She recognized the folder. Not because she had seen it before. But because she knew exactly what it contained. Questions. And questions were becoming a problem. “Jacob?” The teenager looked up. His expression was calm. Too calm. Karen would have preferred anger. Anger was easy to manipulate. Calm meant he had been thinking. And thinking was dangerous. “Can we talk?” Karen forced a smile. “Of course.” She sat down op
