Chapter Six

My mind is hazy, but I can make out the movement of cold, soft, firm lips against mine. A hand comes around my waist, and the person pulls me onto their lap.

“Shhhh, baby. You're safe now."

Alessio!

Desperate for comfort, I cling onto him , wrapping my arms around his neck and burying my face in his chest. He pulls me close and gently rubs my back as I convulse into a sobbing mess.

Time passes, I don't know how long, before I calm down and my sobs subside.

“Are you okay, baby?" His voice comes, calm, quiet, concerned. I look up at him and damn, his eyes!

Not cold like they usually are. Not calculating, not hiding a hundred secrets behind a fake and creepy smile.

Tonight, they’re soft, warm even, worrying about me in a way that makes something inside my chest twist painfully.

Alessio cups my cheek, his thumb brushing away a tear I didn’t even feel fall.

“Talk to me, Amelia,” he murmurs, voice low, steady, anchoring me back into my body. “What happened?”

I shake my head, swallowing hard. Everything feels clogged in my throat; fear, shame, exhaustion. The echo of Lucas’s handwriting still burns behind my eyelids.

A nightmare I'll never be rid of.

Alessio tilts my chin up gently. “Hey. No hiding.” His forehead presses against mine, grounding me. “I felt you shake apart in my arms, baby. You don’t have to pretend, not with me.”

More tears threaten to fall. I bite down on my lip, but it trembles anyway. “It was him,” I whisper. “He left a letter in the bathroom. I thought he was gone. I thought I could breathe again. But then it turns out I am wrong.”

The muscles in Alessio’s jaw tighten, but his hand stays soft where it holds me.

“Lucas.” He says the name like a curse. “He contacted you.”

I nod weakly. You wouldn't actually call it contact, but it is something along those lines. Apart from my friends, Alessio is the only extra soul who knows about my panic attacks and Luca.

Mainly because he found out – I don't know how – and has been an asshole about it, using it to threaten me, subtly though.

His arm tightens around my waist, pulling me impossibly closer, like he could shield me from the memory itself. “I’m here,” he says. “I’m not letting anything happen to you.”

Something inside me cracks.

“He ruined me,” I choke out. “I’m trying to move on, Alessio, I swear, but the second I saw his handwriting I… I couldn’t breathe. I felt like I was right back there, trapped, alone, and…he…he…”

“You’re not alone.”

His voice cuts through mine, firm but gentle, the kind of tone he only uses when he wants me to believe something with my whole soul. “Did you forget our promise? I told you I'm a man of my word didn't I?"

Out of all the Romano brothers, Alessio is the only one I'm slightly close to. I still fear him and try to keep my distance as best as I can, but we grew up in them same town.

We all attended the same elementary and middle school before I dropped out.

We were friends once upon a time. The time when I was bullied for having a sick father and a user mom. No one wanted to be my friend then, except the boy with blue eyes and dark hair that I despised so much.

Okay, despise is rather harsh.

But anyways, our friendship faltered the day Mom told me to stay away from him, that I didn't deserve to have any friends and that his father would beat the shit out of me if he found out I was “leeching" off his son.

I backed off, for good.

My breathing wavers, but it doesn’t break this time around.

Slowly, he takes my shaking hand and places it over his heart. His heartbeat thuds steady beneath my palm , strong, certain, real.

“Feel that?” he whispers. “As long as it's beating, you’re safe. Always!”

I close my eyes, just for a second.

And for the first time since finding that letter, the terror loosens its grip on my senses.

When I open my eyes, Alessio’s gaze is still on me, intense, protective, unreadable… and yet more open than I’ve ever seen it.

“Good,” he murmurs.“There’s my girl.”

Heat rushes to my face — not desire, not yet — but something warm and unsteady and confusing.

“Alessio?” I call, not knowing what I’m asking, just knowing I need him here, grounding me.

His hand smooths up my spine, slow and reassuring.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he says. “Not tonight. Not ever.”

“Take me home," I murmur, burying my face further into his chest. As he lifts me up in his arms and walks out of the room, I feel the constant fear I have of Lucas vanish.

I can't help the feeling that turning to Alessio for comfort is the beginning of something I'll definitely regret.

  • Theirs To Ruin    Chapter Eight

[AMELIA]Is it possible to get a heart attack just from setting eyes on someone? If it's not then it is as from today. My entire frame goes rigid, my fingers freeze around the glass Alberto had forced me to take. My eyes lock in on Luca's and as much as I want to look away, I can't. It's like my body is no longer my own and won't listen to my commands any longer. I feel my breath gradually becoming shallow, the room looking like it's closing in on me, and the constant chatter sounding like it's going on right inside my head. I feel a panic attack on the way, and there's nothing I can do to stop it.Lucas walks towards me with a smile on his face. “Don Alberto!" He calls as he gets to where we're standing. He extends his hand and my fiance shakes it with a smile. “I heard you got a new wife. Just had to come and see for myself who Alberto chose this time around." Alberto smiles and puts his hand around my waist, pulling me closer to him. "Lucas, meet Amelia, my beautiful fiance. She

“Madam, this is a high standard party, not some random diner with your friends." Nadia tells me as I run the brush through my curls. “The boss won't appreciate seeing you like this." I roll my eyes at her and turn around. “You're being a pain in my ass, Nadia. What's wrong with my dress?" " Everything!” I ignore her and continue brushing my hair. Of course Nadia would see something wrong with my dress. It's not one of the dresses she always made me wear, those that are three sizes smaller. Tonight, I chose a sleeveless, ankle length black dress with a thigh high slit and a teasing neckline. I pair it with a pair of black heeled sandals and absolutely no makeup. Of course Nadia would be pissed at my choice of clothing and lack of makeup. Not like I care. I already had a shitty day with the letter and stuff so I am in really no mood for any of her bullshit. I apply some gloss to my lips, put on my earrings, necklace and bracelet, and turn around to face her with some bored look on

[ AMELIA'S POV]Three years ago, I would have panicked at the sight of the all too familiar handwriting. But not now. Right now, it just leaves an unsettling feeling in my stomach. He's watching me. That means the freak is here in this very club. And to think I was celebrating getting rid of him. Deciding not to dwell on it, I tear up the paper and head out to find Luxe. I find her in the dressing room getting ready for another night of making men spend their cash. " If it ain't mi favourite bitch in town!” She rushes towards me and envelopes me in a tight, almost suffocating hug. “Girl I missed yo ass like crazy!" I laugh, stepping further into the room. “I missed you too, Luxe." She looks me up from my head to my toe and whistles. “Damn girl you are fine as fuck. Your fiance sure is treating you well." “Yeah," I breathe out, falling back flat on the bed. “If only he weren't my grandfather with a huge turn off in the form of a pot belly." Luxe laughs and returns her gaze to t

  • Theirs To Ruin    Chapter Four

[AMELIA'S POV]“Amy!" Elsie yells the moment she spots me. The nurse in charge of her has taken her out of her room for a stroll. The doctor had said she needs to exercise more. She runs to me and throws her arms around me in a hug. “You look good." I smile. “I got a new well paying job." I don't know how to explain to her that I'm marrying a man four decades older than me just to keep her in the hospital and settle Mom's insane gambling debts. She won't just be mad, she'll feel guilty and blame herself. Her expression falls. “I just wish I could get better soon, so you won't have to work this hard." I shake my head and pull her to sit on one of the nearby benches. “Tell me, how have you been? Did Mom visit you?" She makes an annoyed face. “She can't even get her head out of her drugs long enough to breathe, talk less of visiting me." Ideal mom for you. I know it's not appropriate, but I sometimes wish she had died that night and not dad. If our father were alive, I won't have

  • Theirs To Ruin    Chapter Three. Amelia

I've been engaged to Alberto for over three months and never has he raised his voice at me, talk less of his hands. But here he is, staring at me like he'll love to strangle me.He slaps me a second time and my head whips to the side, the sting blooming across my cheek so violently my eyes water on instinct. For a second, I can’t even breathe. I just stare at the floor, frozen, pulse hammering against my ribs like a trapped animal.“Alberto…” I choke out, but my voice barely forms. Not to mention my throat still burns. He grabs my chin in a bruising grip, forcing my gaze up to meet his. His pupils are blown wide with fury, jaw clenched so tightly a vein pulses at his temple.“You dare fraternize with other men like some common whore?” he spits. “You dare embarrass me? In the midst of others?” His eyes flick down my body with disgust, not desire. He throws a stack of pictures at me. “Is this what you do now? Why, Amelia? What exactly are you trying to prove?”I take a look at the pho
