Leonel

~~~
My mother ignores my question and wraps me in a hug that smells like expensive vanilla.
“Oh darling, you look so good.” She coos into my ear.
When she pulls back, I catch her pristine blue dress, and I cringe, “and you look off theme.”
She smiles innocently at me, but of course that's her play. She wants to show the press that she disrespects the wedding. Maybe I shouldn’t have invited her, but wouldn’t that have been just as bad?
Of course she would be the one trying to tear my wedding apart. In all my years of enduring her bad parenting, I’ve never thought of disowning her like I’m doing now.
“Why did you invite Genevieve?” I ask incredulously, looking between the two women who give each other knowing looks.
My mother places a palm over her chest, her mouth open in shock, “Darling, I thought we all got a plus one? Surely I can use mine however I want?”
I narrow my eyes at her, irritation spiking every vein I have. Something has to be going on here. I d
    Ava ~~~ Some seconds change your life. Some of them are good. Some of them are bad. And some of them are in the in-between. Wearing this gown on a chilly New York night while holding the most dazzling bouquet of pink roses as I see Leonel. That is plastered in the in-between. In-between longing and fear. Hatred and love. Wanting him and fearing what that means. My hands shake so hard I worry some of the petals on the roses will start falling off, but I’m sure Leonel has a florist who can make roses last forever if she wants them to. Leonel. In his dark pressed suit with a small pink handkerchief sticking out of his pocket, arms folded in front of him while he stares at me, looking so stoic nothing gives away how he’s feeling. Nothing but the glimmer in his grey eyes. The wedding march starts and I jump. Luckily for me, no one notices. There are too many eyes on me, and I must seem like an ant to many of the guests until I walk past. All that’s left for me to do n
    Leonel ~~~ We round the house to the back, away from all the guests. “She’s going to try and destroy you,” I tell Riley, knowing how vindictive Genevieve can be. Riley scoffs, “She can try. Anyway, I didn’t do it cause she’s nasty. I did it to make sure she didn’t follow us. We found Ava.” My heart jumps, “Really? Is she okay? Is she-“ “She’s here and she’s fine,” Ava calls behind me. I turn and run to her, not even bothering to truly look at her or Evelyn beside her. I wrap my arms around her and sink into a sea of white. It takes her a second, but she wraps her arms around me too, sighing into my chest. “Are you okay?” I whisper in her ear. The smell of strawberries has me feeling at peace. “Yea, I’m fine. I just went for a stroll in the garden and lost track of time. I’m sorry.” “Bullshit. Don’t apologise. Everyone’s here for you.” I don’t expect the shaky chuckle that rumbles out of her, “and you.” There’s something in her tone that sounds shaken up, as
    Leonel ~~~ I think I'm about to die. I take the shoe out of Evelyn’s shaking hands, with her shooting daggers at me while I do it. It’s a classic white heel with a light pink bottom finish, definitely the ones I told Lynette to get for Ava. But I can’t believe it. Ava wouldn't run away again, not after everything. “Are… are you sure of what you’re saying?” I ask, feeling lightheaded. “Why would I lie!” Evelyn suddenly screams at me, something that I rarely hear her do “Do you think I stole her shoe and locked her in a closet to stop you from marrying her?!” I don’t reply. My heart is becoming too heavy for that. The only thing I can remember is Ava running away after the soiree. Ava leaving me for 2 weeks worried sick… I shake my head. There isn’t time to remember what broke me. I have a front yard of 1000 guests and the press, all ready to drill me into the ground if this wedding fails. My reputation will be finished. Ava’s reputation will be ruined. I absolutely can’t le
    Ava ~~~ I hate how Nicco’s smell soothes me. Not because he’s looking at me like I’m the most beautiful thing he’s ever laid eyes on, but because he’s familiar, everything about him is: chocolate brown eyes, comforting scent, firm but soft arms… I scurry away from him, grateful that - somehow - my hair has kept its bun. But, with the look on his face, I have a feeling I’m not going to be grateful for much longer. “How did you get into Leonel’s backyard?” I breathe out. He eyes me like he didn’t hear me, and a look between awe and jealousy crosses his handsome face. “Wow.” He whispers, taking a step forward as i immediately back away, “You look beautiful.” I blush, unsure how to take a compliment. “You look like you’re committing a felony. Why are you in Leonel’s backyard?” He raises his face back to mine, as if breaking out of a trance, “I pushed down some empty tables, and when the guards in that area went to check out the sound, I jumped over the fence.” “Tha
    Leonel ~~~ Rafael. Not Ava. Not me. Not the beauty of the wedding. No. Those aren’t the things my guests are whispering about. It’s all my son. “Who’s that boy Madison is carrying?” “Why does he look so much like the Leonel Sinclair?” “Could he be his uncle?” “But why would Leonel allow his ex-wife hold his nephew?” “Don't be stupid! That’s obviously a secret son.” At the word “son”, my knees buckle, and I reach for the table by the window I’m looking out of to steady myself. This cannot be happening. Even in keeping her mouth shut, Madison somehow still made herself and my son the spectacle of the night. “Maybe spying on your guests is hurting more than helping you?” Riley says behind me. I turn around to see her dressed in a flowery pink dress, a single pink rose in her hands, and her usually untamable hair put up in a high, curly bun. “You look nice,” I say absent-mindedly. “And you look like shit.” She replies, “God I can’t believe she’s actually
