Chapter 2

Author: Eternity
Sarah replied almost immediately.

"Got it. You have a beautiful name."

I politely replied, "Thank you. My grandmother gave it to me."

My parents had given me a childhood nickname instead.

Bounce.

They said it was cute and easy to remember.

Then, almost as soon as I was born, they bounced me off to my grandmother in the countryside.

When I was six, it was time for me to start elementary school.

That meant I needed a proper legal name, the kind that would go on my records and follow me for the rest of my life.

Grandma called my parents several times.

Every time, they gave her the same answer.

"We know. We're thinking about it."

"We're both busy auditioning for roles and traveling for concerts."

"It's just a name. Why are you in such a hurry?"

One month passed.

Then another.

By the time the school year was about to begin, Grandma was worried I'd miss enrollment and end up starting school a year late.

So she made the decision herself.

She named me Skye Brooks.

"My sweet girl, Grandma doesn't need you to become rich or famous."

"I just want you to grow up free, with the whole sky ahead of you."

Even at that young age, I understood something.

If I was nothing more than Bounce to my parents, something they could simply send bouncing from one place to another, then I didn't want that to be the only thing my name meant.

So I chose to become Skye Brooks, a name carrying all the love and blessing my grandmother had given me.

Not the daughter someone had forgotten in a corner.

A knock came at the door.

"Miss, dinner's ready."

The housekeeper knew perfectly well that I was my parents' daughter too.

Yet Vivian was called Miss Vivian.

I was simply Miss.

I didn't know whether that came directly from my parents or whether the staff had simply learned who mattered more in this house.

Thankfully, I already understood that this had never been my home.

I'd never expected it to be.

Still, when I walked downstairs, even behind my sunglasses, I couldn't help but stare at what I saw.

The living room was filled with clothing racks.

Row after row of elegant dresses hung neatly in place, with exquisite fabrics, intricate cuts, and flowing skirts that looked as though they had been chosen for a red carpet.

Matching heels were arranged nearby.

Several stylists and members of a brand team were busy preparing everything.

One person adjusted Vivian's dress.

Another checked tomorrow's styling plan.

Someone else laid out jewelry piece by piece for her to choose from.

It was obvious that all of this was for tomorrow night's birthday celebration.

It wasn't an ordinary family gathering.

It was a private charity gala with members of the press in attendance.

For Vivian, it was another opportunity to appear publicly as the family's perfect daughter.

And I was nothing more than a stranger they had suddenly brought home.

When Dad noticed me standing on the stairs, a flicker of embarrassment crossed his face.

His eyes traveled from my hair to my shoes, then finally settled on my face.

He looked almost as if he were assessing a potential threat to tomorrow's photographs.

"Tomorrow's gala will be covered by the press," Dad said. "The official guest materials have already gone out, and they introduce Vivian as our daughter."

I waited for him to continue.

"We're not changing everything at the last minute. If anyone asks who you are, say you're a relative staying with us before college. Don't call us Mom and Dad in front of the cameras."

Mom glanced toward the stylists before lowering her voice.

"People will start digging into the past if they find out about you. They'll want to know why you were raised somewhere else, and this family doesn't need that kind of story spreading before Vivian's debut."

"So you want me to lie about being your daughter."

Dad's expression hardened.

"We're asking you not to create unnecessary trouble. You've lived without using our name for eighteen years. One more night shouldn't be difficult."

Dad looked at my jeans and T-shirt again.

"You still need something appropriate in case a guest sees you inside the house. Vivian can give you one of her older dresses."

"She can't wear mine," Vivian said quickly. "The waist would never fit her."

Dad glanced at me as though I were the inconvenience.

"Then find something loose. She only needs to look presentable enough that no one asks questions."

I nodded.

"Okay."

Then I went back upstairs without taking any of Vivian's clothes.

My suitcase remained beside the bed.

The zipper hadn't been opened once.

My phone lit up with a reminder from my academic advisor.

"Your early move-in request has been registered. Remember to bring the required documents."

The press release called Vivian their only daughter. Tomorrow, if anyone asked, I was supposed to call my own parents Mr. and Mrs. Brooks.

I looked at the date on the message.

Three more days. After that, they would never have to explain who I was again.

Vivian shot me a smug look."Seriously, Skye? Who puts security cameras all over their own house?""If you hadn't been sneaking around and stealing things, none of us would have ever suspected there was a thief in the family."Just as Vivian was happily piling accusation after accusation onto me, the housekeeper suddenly smacked her forehead."Oh, wait! We actually do have cameras!""Mrs. Brooks had them installed temporarily. She was worried that the girl coming from the countryside might cause trouble.""She told us to put hidden cameras in the hallways and by the stairs, so if she did anything suspicious, we could throw her out immediately."Mom had secretly installed the cameras to keep an eye on me.She never imagined they would end up clearing my name.Vivian's face went deathly pale."Maybe we shouldn't check the footage.""The necklace has already been found. We're family. We should at least spare Skye some humiliation."I turned to the officer."Whether she wants the footage c

Dad let out a disappointed sigh."I thought she might actually be useful somehow.""If I can find this girl, that would be a huge accomplishment. Maybe I'd even double the number of industry connections coming my way."Mom looked even more determined."I have to find her. I want to take her on as my protégé.""I may be getting older, but that girl could become a global star. She could carry on my legacy."Just then, Dad's phone rang. His expression changed dramatically."Skye Brooks?""You said the girl's name is Skye Brooks?!"My heart tightened.Mom and Dad hurried toward me."Bounce, if you really don't know her, fine.""But does the name Skye Brooks sound familiar at all?"I curled my lips into a faint smile. So after all these years, my own parents didn't even know my real name. And they had never cared enough to learn it.In their eyes, I'd always just been a ball they could kick around whenever they wanted."If you two don't know, then there's even less reason for me to know."T

Sarah was thrilled for me."Skye, which company do you want to sign with?"I shook my head."None of them. I'm not interested."Sarah gave me an awkward smile."Skye, could you please go out there, just this once, for my sake?""The university president personally called me.""If you don't go, I'm going to have some explaining to do."I had no choice. So I slipped on my slippers and went outside just to get it over with. The moment I appeared in my pajamas, bare-faced and wearing nothing but slippers, people came pouring out of the dozens of black Mercedes parked outside."Oh my God! She's even more beautiful in person!""Skye, you're born for this industry. Sign with us, and we'll make you a star!"I was completely overwhelmed by the crowd. Then a familiar figure pushed his way through."Skye, I'm here representing Bennett Entertainment.""If you agree to sign with us, I'll personally make sure you get the best contract we can offer."For the first time, Ethan Bennett finally looked a

Seeing me walk out, a flicker of disgust crossed Dad's face."You're leaving?"I nodded. "I'm moving into the dorms early."My parents didn't ask another question."Good, good. Go ahead and leave. At least we'll finally have Vivian's dressing room back."It was as though every extra word they spent on me was a waste of their time.Vivian suddenly covered her face and burst into tears."Skye, did you come here just to laugh at me?"Dad immediately stroked her hair soothingly."Don't cry, sweetheart. What right does that girl have to laugh at you?""Come on, Daddy will increase your allowance by another ten thousand dollars, okay?"Mom wrapped her arms around Vivian, cooing over her."Exactly. She can barely stand to show her own face. What right does she have to judge you?""She'll be gone today. I'll take you shopping right now.""We'll buy you new clothes, jewelry, and makeup. We can fill the whole house with them if you want."At that moment, I didn't even get the chance to say goodb

Both my parents looked shocked and embarrassed.Director Hayes didn't seem to notice."As you probably know, I've been developing this film for years.""The reason I still haven't started shooting is because I've been waiting for the right leading actress to come along."With Vivian watching him with tear-filled eyes, Dad forced himself to ask,"Director Hayes, may I ask if she's a well-known actress?"Hayes shook his head, a look of anticipation appearing in his eyes."She isn't part of the entertainment industry.""She's an ordinary girl. I don't even know where she is right now.""But the moment I saw her, I knew.""She was my leading lady. No one else could take her place."As he spoke, Hayes lit up his phone. The photo on the screen was slightly grainy and clearly several years old.Yet he had treasured it enough to use it as his lock screen."Once you see this girl, you'll understand what I mean."My parents took the phone. The moment they saw the photo, they both seemed to forge

I don't know who screamed first."It's a ghost!"The crowd immediately recoiled, shrinking away from me as though I were something contagious.I looked down at the water. My long, soaked hair had fallen completely over my face.My cap was nowhere to be seen, probably swept away by the water.Only a pair of large, wet eyes peeked through the strands.I probably did look frightening. Cold, drenched, and utterly disheveled.Using both my hands and feet, I pulled myself out of the pool on my own.Vivian stood among the crowd and immediately covered her mouth, putting on a look of panic."Skye, I'm so sorry.""I really didn't mean to.""I just wanted the stylists and doctors here to take a look and help you feel more confident in front of the cameras.""I never thought things would get this out of hand. I didn't mean to scare everyone."I gave her a flat look and said nothing. She kept apologizing, insisting it had been an accident. But the smile tugging at the corners of her eyes and lips
