Chapter 4

Author: Eternity
Dad's face darkened.

"This is not a decision you get to make in the middle of Vivian's birthday gala."

"Ethan already said he doesn't want to marry me."

"Then let the adults decide what happens next," Mom said. "The Bennett family has known us for years. We're not losing that relationship because you decided to make a scene."

She turned to Ethan.

"Vivian understands your world. She grew up attending premieres, charity galas, and industry events. "The original agreement was meant to unite our families. If Skye refuses to honor it, Vivian would be a far more suitable match."

Vivian looked down, but not before I caught the smile on her face.

Ethan did not answer immediately. He glanced at her before looking at me again.

"I still don't understand why she was named in the agreement instead of Vivian."

"Because I'm their first daughter," I said.

The room went quiet again.

Several guests turned toward my parents.

Dad cleared his throat.

"Skye was raised by her grandmother because of our work. Vivian is the daughter we raised here."

He made it sound like a boarding arrangement instead of eighteen years of abandonment.

One of the guests looked at me with open curiosity.

"What are you planning to do after you leave here?"

"I start college next week."

"Which college?"

Before I could answer, Vivian spoke for me.

"Skye has always been good at studying. She received a scholarship somewhere, didn't she?"

Her tone made it sound like a small award from a local school.

"I received a full scholarship to Harvard."

A murmur spread through the guests.

"Harvard?"

"A full scholarship?"

"What are you studying?"

More people began asking questions. For the first time that evening, they were looking at me instead of Vivian.

Dad's embarrassment disappeared.

"A full scholarship," he repeated, loud enough for the people around us to hear. "She was always academically gifted. We made sure she had the freedom to focus on her education."

Mom caught on immediately.

"Skye has never enjoyed public attention," she said with a practiced smile. "That's why we've protected her privacy all these years."

An hour earlier, the gala materials had called Vivian their only daughter. Now my parents were taking credit for achievements they hadn't known existed.

Neither of them knew what I planned to study or had ever seen one of my report cards, but that didn't stop Dad from placing a hand on my shoulder for the cameras.

"We're extremely proud of both our daughters."

I stepped away from him.

"I was raised by my grandmother. She helped me apply."

His smile stiffened.

Mom quickly changed the subject, but the guests kept asking about my scholarship.

Vivian tried to draw their attention back to the entertainment companies interested in signing her. No one heard her the first time.

The second time, a guest gave her a distracted nod before asking me about my plans after graduation.

Vivian's fingers tightened around her champagne glass.

She watched our parents answer questions about me as though they had been involved in my life all along.

Then she stepped between me and the guests.

"Skye has always been good at studying," she said. "But academic success doesn't make public attention any easier for her."

She turned toward me.

"You've covered your face since the moment you arrived. If you're going to college and meeting new people, maybe tonight is the perfect time to stop hiding."

"I'm not hiding."

"Then take off your mask."

"No."

Vivian gave the guests an embarrassed smile.

"She's clearly been insecure about it for years. Otherwise, why would she come into her own family's home dressed like this?"

She knew nothing about my life, but that had never stopped her from speaking for me.A woman from the styling team tried to ease the tension.

"There's no reason to pressure her. She can take it off when she feels comfortable."

Vivian ignored her.

"There are stylists and cosmetic surgeons here who help people with much more difficult faces every day. No one is going to laugh at you."

A few guests shifted uncomfortably.

Mom should have stopped her.

Instead, she looked at my mask.

"Perhaps Vivian is right. You can't dress like this forever."

Dad nodded.

"If you're going to Harvard, people will eventually find out who your parents are. We can arrange professional help before the press gets hold of an unflattering photograph."

Minutes ago, they had claimed they had protected my privacy. Now that my scholarship made me useful, they wanted to decide how I should appear in public.

"I don't need professional help."

Vivian moved closer.

"Then let everyone see."

Before I could step away, she pulled off my cap.

"Stop."

She reached for my sunglasses, but I caught her wrist.

Her expression changed the moment I touched her.

"I'm only trying to help you," she said loudly.

"I said don't touch me."

I released her and moved back.

The swimming pool was directly behind me.

Vivian saw it too. Her eyes dropped briefly toward the water before returning to my face.

Ethan stepped closer.

"That's enough, Vivian."

She ignored him.

"Why are you making this so difficult, Skye? Everyone here already knows what you're worried about."

She reached for my sunglasses again.

I turned my face away.

Both of her hands struck my shoulders.

As I lost my balance, she cried out, "Skye, be careful!"

The warning came after the shove.

I fell backward into the pool.

The cold water closed over my head. My sunglasses disappeared first, followed by my mask.

For several seconds, I could not tell which way was up.

When my feet touched the bottom, I pushed myself toward the surface and caught the edge of the pool.

My soaked hair covered most of my face as I pulled myself up.

Everyone's eyes widened. For a moment, no one seemed to breathe.

Vivian shot me a smug look."Seriously, Skye? Who puts security cameras all over their own house?""If you hadn't been sneaking around and stealing things, none of us would have ever suspected there was a thief in the family."Just as Vivian was happily piling accusation after accusation onto me, the housekeeper suddenly smacked her forehead."Oh, wait! We actually do have cameras!""Mrs. Brooks had them installed temporarily. She was worried that the girl coming from the countryside might cause trouble.""She told us to put hidden cameras in the hallways and by the stairs, so if she did anything suspicious, we could throw her out immediately."Mom had secretly installed the cameras to keep an eye on me.She never imagined they would end up clearing my name.Vivian's face went deathly pale."Maybe we shouldn't check the footage.""The necklace has already been found. We're family. We should at least spare Skye some humiliation."I turned to the officer."Whether she wants the footage c

Dad let out a disappointed sigh."I thought she might actually be useful somehow.""If I can find this girl, that would be a huge accomplishment. Maybe I'd even double the number of industry connections coming my way."Mom looked even more determined."I have to find her. I want to take her on as my protégé.""I may be getting older, but that girl could become a global star. She could carry on my legacy."Just then, Dad's phone rang. His expression changed dramatically."Skye Brooks?""You said the girl's name is Skye Brooks?!"My heart tightened.Mom and Dad hurried toward me."Bounce, if you really don't know her, fine.""But does the name Skye Brooks sound familiar at all?"I curled my lips into a faint smile. So after all these years, my own parents didn't even know my real name. And they had never cared enough to learn it.In their eyes, I'd always just been a ball they could kick around whenever they wanted."If you two don't know, then there's even less reason for me to know."T

Sarah was thrilled for me."Skye, which company do you want to sign with?"I shook my head."None of them. I'm not interested."Sarah gave me an awkward smile."Skye, could you please go out there, just this once, for my sake?""The university president personally called me.""If you don't go, I'm going to have some explaining to do."I had no choice. So I slipped on my slippers and went outside just to get it over with. The moment I appeared in my pajamas, bare-faced and wearing nothing but slippers, people came pouring out of the dozens of black Mercedes parked outside."Oh my God! She's even more beautiful in person!""Skye, you're born for this industry. Sign with us, and we'll make you a star!"I was completely overwhelmed by the crowd. Then a familiar figure pushed his way through."Skye, I'm here representing Bennett Entertainment.""If you agree to sign with us, I'll personally make sure you get the best contract we can offer."For the first time, Ethan Bennett finally looked a

Seeing me walk out, a flicker of disgust crossed Dad's face."You're leaving?"I nodded. "I'm moving into the dorms early."My parents didn't ask another question."Good, good. Go ahead and leave. At least we'll finally have Vivian's dressing room back."It was as though every extra word they spent on me was a waste of their time.Vivian suddenly covered her face and burst into tears."Skye, did you come here just to laugh at me?"Dad immediately stroked her hair soothingly."Don't cry, sweetheart. What right does that girl have to laugh at you?""Come on, Daddy will increase your allowance by another ten thousand dollars, okay?"Mom wrapped her arms around Vivian, cooing over her."Exactly. She can barely stand to show her own face. What right does she have to judge you?""She'll be gone today. I'll take you shopping right now.""We'll buy you new clothes, jewelry, and makeup. We can fill the whole house with them if you want."At that moment, I didn't even get the chance to say goodb

Both my parents looked shocked and embarrassed.Director Hayes didn't seem to notice."As you probably know, I've been developing this film for years.""The reason I still haven't started shooting is because I've been waiting for the right leading actress to come along."With Vivian watching him with tear-filled eyes, Dad forced himself to ask,"Director Hayes, may I ask if she's a well-known actress?"Hayes shook his head, a look of anticipation appearing in his eyes."She isn't part of the entertainment industry.""She's an ordinary girl. I don't even know where she is right now.""But the moment I saw her, I knew.""She was my leading lady. No one else could take her place."As he spoke, Hayes lit up his phone. The photo on the screen was slightly grainy and clearly several years old.Yet he had treasured it enough to use it as his lock screen."Once you see this girl, you'll understand what I mean."My parents took the phone. The moment they saw the photo, they both seemed to forge

I don't know who screamed first."It's a ghost!"The crowd immediately recoiled, shrinking away from me as though I were something contagious.I looked down at the water. My long, soaked hair had fallen completely over my face.My cap was nowhere to be seen, probably swept away by the water.Only a pair of large, wet eyes peeked through the strands.I probably did look frightening. Cold, drenched, and utterly disheveled.Using both my hands and feet, I pulled myself out of the pool on my own.Vivian stood among the crowd and immediately covered her mouth, putting on a look of panic."Skye, I'm so sorry.""I really didn't mean to.""I just wanted the stylists and doctors here to take a look and help you feel more confident in front of the cameras.""I never thought things would get this out of hand. I didn't mean to scare everyone."I gave her a flat look and said nothing. She kept apologizing, insisting it had been an accident. But the smile tugging at the corners of her eyes and lips
