Chapter 5

作者: Echo
For the next month, I was the perfect prisoner.

I adhered strictly to my confinement, staying in my room, never attending a clan council, and cutting off all contact with my allies.

But the world outside my door was far from peaceful.

Julia, flaunting her new role as Deputy Advisor, threw herself into the vampire social scene, desperate to build a reputation as a high-society figure.

She squandered the clan's funds on lavish blood-feasts and expensive jewelry.

But it was clear not everyone was buying her act.

Every raven she sent out was either returned unopened or shot out of the sky. Not a single ancient house would deal with a newcomer who had clawed her way up by sleeping with the Earl.

One night, my door was kicked open.

Joseph stormed in, radiating fury.

"Elizabeth! What games are you playing? Why are all our allies suddenly threatening to break their treaties? Did you contact them? Are you deliberately trying to sabotage Julia?"

I sat on the sofa, not even bothering to look up.

"My Lord Earl, you give me too much credit," I said, taking a sip of blood. "For the past month, I have been under the watchful eye of the four guards you assigned to me. I haven't even stepped out of this room. How could I possibly contact our allies?"

"You're lying!" Joseph's eyes were red with rage. "There's no other explanation for why they would suddenly betray their oaths!"

"Betray their oaths?" I finally looked up, my expression mocking. "They signed those treaties because of me. Now that you have me locked away, they have no obligation to help you. What's the matter? Without my protection, is our great Earl unable to handle something as simple as managing his own allies?"

My words struck a nerve, shattering his fragile, pathetic pride.

Joseph lunged forward, slamming his hands on the arms of the sofa, leaning over me.

"You think you're irreplaceable, don't you!" he snarled, his face inches from mine, spittle flying. "You're just jealous! You're jealous that I favor Julia, jealous that she took your place! Your petty mind is disgusting!"

I stared at the face so close to my own.

He had completely lost it, consumed by power and ambition until not a shred of reason remained.

"Think what you will," I said, leaning back to create distance. "If that's all, please leave. I'd like to rest."

"Rest? You think you get to rest here peacefully anymore?"

My calm indifference drove him over the edge.

He immediately summoned every servant and elder to the hall. In front of everyone, he made his proclamation.

"I, Earl Joseph Nightwood, hereby officially declare that Elizabeth is stripped of all titles! She is banished from the Nightwood Clan, forever!"

The hall was dead silent.

Joseph sneered at me. "You're so proud, aren't you? You think you're irreplaceable? Tomorrow, I will sign the treaty with Prince Archon himself! I will prove to everyone that I can reach the pinnacle of power without you!"

Faced with this sudden, public banishment, I didn't fight. I didn't beg.

I calmly wheeled out the suitcase I had already packed.

Under the shocked stares of every vampire present, I walked out of the castle gates without a second glance.

In the blink of an eye, I was back in my true home, my own castle—a fortress of House Valerius, ten times larger and more ancient than Nightwood's pitiful estate.

I went straight to my study, opened the vault, and retrieved a contract.

The lease agreement for the castle the Nightwood Clan currently occupied.

The expiration date was clearly written: tomorrow.

For a hundred years, I had charged him a mere three crates of common blood a month and covered all the maintenance myself. Now that he had banished me, the free ride was over.

I rang for my Lawkeeper.

"Have the Valerius Enforcement Guard arm themselves. Tomorrow, at ten o'clock sharp, they will march on the Nightwood Clan's stronghold and reclaim my castle. That is a Valerius property, and it will not be defiled by squatters." I paused, my voice dropping to a lethal calm. "If anyone dares to resist, kill them on sight. It's time they learned the price of angering House Valerius."

The reply that crackled through the stone was sharp and absolute.

"As you command, Your Highness Elizabeth."

  • They Banished Their True Queen   Chapter 11

On the run, Joseph and Julia became the lowest of the low in the vampire world. After their lies were exposed, they were shunned by every clan. The kill-on-sight order from the Valerius family, combined with the bitter hatred of the common vampires they had deceived, meant no one dared to offer them shelter. They lost not only their warm castle and their high status but also the basic means of survival. The once-proud Count was now a pathetic wreck, forced to scurry through the shadows like a sewer rat. Someone even saw him in a slum, fighting over a cheap bag of blood plasma.A month later, on a bitterly cold night. With nowhere left to run, Joseph knelt outside the magnificent iron gates of the Valerius castle."Elizabeth! I know you're in there!" he cried, his voice a raw, desperate howl. He clung to the cold iron bars, gaunt and haggard. "I was wrong! I truly was! Please, call off the High Council's warrant! Don't you remember the nights we watched the moon together? The portrait I

High on the success of their ridiculous spectacle, Joseph and Julia clung to it like a lifeline. They began campaigning even more frantically among the common vampires, shamelessly spreading their "truth" about being brutally oppressed.Deep in a hidden part of the Black Forest, an eerie green bonfire lit up a clearing packed with angry, resentful faces.Julia, dressed in a deliberately tattered dress, was crying her eyes out."I am just a fledgling, turned only three months ago. When I discovered that the high and mighty ancient nobles, like Elizabeth, were stealing from the clan's public resources, I bravely stood up to her. And for that? She unleashed her fury on me! She's using her family's power to hunt us all down!"Joseph stepped forward at the perfect moment, wrapping his arms around the "faltering" Julia, playing the part of a heartbroken leader. "My friends, this isn't just an attack on Julia! This is the old guard trying to crush all of us who are new! They hoard the best bl

I sat in my spacious, comfortable study, coldly watching the flood of messages from Joseph, Julia, and the other core members of Clan Nightwood.Elizabeth, answer me! Please, just answer! Those armored guards are throwing our things out! What is going on!You can't be this cruel! You're driving the entire clan to its grave! Stop this, for old times' sake!I never replied. The tone of his messages devolved from rage laced with pride, to frantic demands, and finally, to broken, weeping pleas. At the same time, a more lethal storm was brewing in the upper echelons of vampire society.I had the Valerius clan formally declare Clan Nightwood an enemy.Blood-ravens flew from clan to clan, carrying the message. The news spread like wildfire, cutting off every possible escape route for Nightwood. The neutral clans who had been watching from the sidelines, terrified of getting caught in the crossfire, pulled all their investments overnight and even cut off their supply of basic blood rations.Wh

I looked down at the weeping Joseph, filled with a pathetic sort of pity."What we once had?" I scoffed, completely unmoved by his pleas. "Lord Count, when you were in my bed, planning how to strip me of my power, did you think of 'what we once had' then? When you put the protective amulet I bled for around Julia's neck, did you spare even a single thought for our past?"I took a step back in disgust, avoiding his attempt to touch me as if he were a pile of filth. Then I turned and announced to everyone present, "I've had enough of this childish game. I have decided to officially return to the Valerius family and take what is rightfully mine. From this day forward, I have no connection to Clan Nightwood."Hearing my declaration, a deeply satisfied smile spread across Prince Archon's stern face.He released his grip. Julia crumpled to the ground like a rag doll, clutching her throat and coughing violently, her eyes wide with terror."Good girl. You've finally come to your senses," Princ

I didn't answer the furious roar coming from Joseph’s message crystal.I simply waved my hand, and the magic of my invisibility faded. When my form reappeared, the shock on their faces was absolute."That vault has always been my private property," I said, my voice as cold as my gaze, which was fixed on a wide-eyed Joseph. He reacted as if I were his last hope, instinctively reaching for me. "Elizabeth! You're here! Perfect timing, now tell this damned guard to open the door, the Prince is still wait—"I slapped his hand away, my gaze as cold as if I were looking at a corpse. "Your memory seems to be failing you, Lord Count. It was just last night that you banished me from Clan Nightwood forever, in front of everyone."I smoothed the golden tassels on my sleeve and offered a faint smile. "Since I'm no longer a member of this clan, the key I gave you is, naturally, void. So why should I open my vault to a group of strangers?""You despicable woman!" Julia, finally processing what was ha

In the long hours before dawn, I tallied what Joseph owed me.There was the difference in rent—one hundred and fifty crates of rare blood. The one hundred crates of magic crystals I'd contributed. And another fifty crates of rare blood. It was enough to bankrupt a minor clan overnight. And I was going to make those ungrateful bastards pay it all back. With interest. Down to the last drop. The next day, 9:00 AM.Cloaked in invisibility, I appeared at the entrance to my private blood vault.Joseph and Julia, dressed in their finest, led the clan’s core members. They stood in wait, a grim reception line for Prince Archon.A short while later, a suffocating, powerful presence announced his arrival. Prince Archon appeared, wrapped in a pure black cloak embroidered with dark gold.He was an ancient vampire, thousands of years old. The terrifying aura he radiated was enough to make the knees of every low-ranked vampire there tremble."Your Highness! Welcome to Clan Nightwood!" Joseph immediat
